Hey all, I just read the article from massivly talking about how AoW is like EvE however the article really  didnt mention any features of the game.  So i have been trying to do some digging but I would figure I would ask a few questions as well in case anyone knows the anwer to these.  PS a simple yes or no will do however if any of these questions require a longer response you are free to give it.

-Territory Wars?

-Player / Guild housing?

-Ability to shape terrain? Terraforming /  planting trees then harvesting them for wood etc?

-Ability to make buildings / castles / farms etc etc?

-How important is crafting?  Are players forced into getting gear / items from other human player crafters or can player crafters be ignored for a raiding / pvp gear line. ( I kinda got that crafting was important from the article but a little more explanation would be helpful)

Thank you for your time!

Im a total newbie in AoW but i can help a little.

- Wars. Oh yes. I was even killed twice in my home city this very morning >.< There are also clan wars, school wars, 100% open PvP.

- Housing. Im not exactly sure on personal housing, but clans can buy their own land, build thier own castles and place things where they like, and much more. (ive only read about this)

- Terraforming? No, i dont think so. But of course you can harvest things.

- Crafting is more important than probably any game in recent memory. You even have to eat. You will literally starve to death. Where to buy food? Not from NPCs, go to a city (one of several) and find a player chef selling food. The different crafters are also intertwined deeply. They need each other to make/improve/enchant. You can buy low level gear from vendors, but thats it. Everything else is player made 100%. Edit; Well there are also outfits you can buy in the cash shop im told but my character looks extremely awesome i dont care about those. (yet)

- A few other notes you may like to hear.

Painting, calligraphy, farming, poison making, blacksmithing, craftsmen, chef, herbalist, spying, stealing, kidnapping, jail, prison, beheading, bounty hunting and rewards, absolutely amazing graphics and i can max evreything on my shitty pc and literally get 60 FPS, no joke. The ping can get high, but that (obviously) will be fixed in time. Great looking gear and weapons. Stupidly deep combat and skill system, massive, massive, massive world, skill > gear, team practicing < some people dont like it but i think its so freaking cool. Instances that literally take a while to finish (ive never ran one yet but i read 2-3 hours for some) umm so many things to list. Even the water will reflect what is near you in the background quite detailed. Its enough to make you look and think whoa. Umm fishing, hunting. Bribery. Im a shaolin monk so im not supposed to eat meat, drink wine, kidnap, or use prostitutes (yeah, you read that right) i can do these things, but i will have to repent my sins (haha wuuut).

And much much more. Ive only played 2 days.... seriously.

Edit; Oops forgot a favorite. Absolutely beautiful combat animations that will amuse  you. Also skills that enable you to sprint across water or run up a wall. etc etc. To even send a letter or mail your friend you need a carrier pigeon hehe. They are not so cheap. Its the little things to the game i like.

With all that said my head is still spinning in total confusion and i literally get whipped in PvP (badly) but afte ryou play it you dont really care. Its just fun and well done. Good luck!

You forgot personal shops, stalls.

As far as crafting, You learn blanket recipies. Like a certain catagory of poison. Each catagor has maybe 8 or so different poisons. Each time you craft you get 5 or so of one of the 8.

As you craft you gain in ability. So those poisons get stronger, and become different poisons. There is a way of "manufacturing" meaning making the same type of poison over and over. I'm not sure exactly how, but it has to do with one of the mini games, taught to you when you first learn a profession.

To add to that, every item deteriorates over time.

When I eat chocolate chip pie it just doesn't feel like chocolate chip cookies. The texture, the consistency, it's just not the same and this is disappointing.

On the terraforming-

You can't move mountains or even plant permanent objects, as a farmer your crops will not last more than 10 minutes. You can change the guild base with upgrades that are permanent until someone burns them down. You can set up stalls in the town squares or divination stands for however long you want to man them (or 4 hours logged out for ViP).

I don't think this is a player housing kind of game, it wouldn't be easy with its very non flat terrain, instanced housing would suck here and the towns are such hubs of activity I doubt people would use simple UO/Lotro style houses for anything other than treasure dumps.

I am very impressed with Wushu's towns, namely chengdu in the CB2 but it is just a very lively place where 30 people will be selling stuff in the town square, three streets down someone will be trying to kidnap and on a roof in the other direction some contable will be trying to collect a bounty on some criminal...this you see daily while riding to the blacksmith (and watching the npc's scatter in front of your horse in anger).

On Crafting-

Crafted items are the pinnacle of items, you want the best you better go find a tailor with the right recipie who has had a poison maker enhance the armor. Or a blacksmith who has crafted a blade and had a cook sharpen it.

You want a bag? Better find a tailor there isn't any other way (other than the holiday gift pack that I think had one medium bag in it)

Starving? Better find a cook (or be stuck at 20% health in a game where anything can happen)

I'd say AoW's "sandboxyness" comes more from the sense of freedom and perpetual player interaction than in actually changing the world in any meaningful way.

The world is actually pretty static, but since there are so many player interactions going on everywhere, it feels vibrant and alive - more so than many western "sandboxes" (MO, DF, Xsyon) where you have housing, terraforming and whatnot, but the worlds still feel dead and void of life anyway because there are no meaningful tools for player interaction except mindless PvP.

This is the kind of info I've been looking for but hasn't been all that readily available. The game seems to have some pretty cool features to it. Thanks for posting this stuff, all. Very helpful!

By the way, players designated as good friends or enemies of you can harvest your farms and silk worms without your permission.

You can use this to help or harass other players.

Also, someone your designated as a enemy cannot be wipe away  from the your enemy list until your mutual enmity level fall to zero.

(Only player killed by a another player is given the choice  to designate the killer as an enemy, you can't wantonly declared someone to be an enemy without cause).

What do you do if you regret making an enemy of someone who might be too powerful or keep on harassing you? You can send him a peace offering gift (usually wine) which is fortunately quite cheap and clear the  enmity level. This can be performed whether the other party is online or not.

Choose your friends and enemies wisely...
