In 2002, Asheron's Call 2 was released and was far ahead of it's time in terms of graphics, game mechanics, item system, crafting, pretty much everything about it. Not only that, it truly defines what an MMORPG is meant to be. A very large persistant world which you are a part of and mean something. The game doesn't offer linear quest lines like modern MMO's, no quest hubs, no set path, no classes. It is just a great game with great game mechanics.

For starters:

Classes are open ended. You earn experience which is used as a currency to upgrade skills. Every race has a VERY unique playstyle. From a race that can be a "hivekeeper" which throws bee's and wasp's at enemies to a "Tactician" that can lay down turrets and walls to lay waste to there enemy. Or maybe the secret race that needs to be unlocked in the game called "Drudge" which is a jack-of-all-trades! Or maybe a race that throws axes, uses spells and summons pets, or a hunter that wields a bow and summons a pet lasher. A healer? A healer that nukes? A healer that tanks? A tank that buffs? Be whatever mix of skills you want.

Everything is based around exploration. EVERYTHING. If you like exploring, this game is for you. To find quests, you need to explore, to learn crafting, you need to explore, to learn how to get the best XP, you need to explore. There are so many things you can find while exploring too. Rare spawn monsters which give better loot, incursion quests which are activated by killing green colored monsters yielding tons of xp, or maybe a secret dungeon that turns out to be a daily quest which yields a ton of experience?

Add to this an in-depth and meaningful crafting system. A consignment shop system where you can sell your goods such as weapons, armor, or minerals from crafting!

Add to this random stats like Diablo where an item can have a ton of enchantments which increase as you level AND those enchants can be used on other items as you please with a crafting skill called "Spellbinding"

Add to this an epic story line which ties Asherons Call 1 and why Asherons Call 2 is so desolate. (Vaults)

Add to this infinite character progression. The level cap is 150, but getting there isn't needed. In fact, you will never get there. Crafting level cap on EACH tradeskill is 500, yet the highest level item is 150, you will probably NEVER hit level 500 but it isn't necessary. There is ALWAYS something to work toward, but it doesn't hold your hand.

You are put into the world of Dereth... and it reminds me so much of playing a game like Morrowind and having the freedom to do anything BUT also having thousands of players to interact with, trade with, group with... This is what an MMORPG should be.

I fully support this thread :).

After spending years upon years looking for an mmorpg that met my crazy stringent, particular tastes, I think I finally found it with the revival of AC2. I will definitely be playing this for the long, forseeable future.

Glad you enjoy it! I'm addicted to the crafting system and grouping up to kill high level incursion quests is really fun.

Rumor has it, they had over 100,000 new AC1 subs after they re-launched AC2. server is jam packed, tons of groups, it's great.

It wasn't ahead of its time. MMOs of the past were just much higher quality than MMOs of today.

Asheron's Call 2 shut down because it wasn't that good compared to all the MMOs around it at the time, as well as technical issues.

And yet its miles better than modern MMOs.

I agree, but AC2 has gone a long way. The expansions really improved the game and the AC2 in 2005 is really what I am talking about when I say it was ahead of it's time, I should rename the title. They revamped the crafting system and tweaked all the skill trees and added new races. 2005, we had WoW, EQ2, DAoC, and a bunch of other games. Would you look at an MMO made in 2002? Or just try a newer MMO? That is why it closed, in my opinion.

It's perked my interest a bit. I think some player made YouTube videos would help in garnering a bit more attention.

AC2 introduced several features that seem standard in MMOs today.

  • - the UI design
  • - the ammo-less ranged weapons
  • - 3D characters at character select

I have to hop in game and play again to see what some of the others were.

I've read overwhelmingly positive reviews of AC2 since it was brought back in a beta form.  I think there's a bit of the "rose colored glasses" cliche going on here.  But before I explain that, I want to limit your flaming me as much as possible by stating that I will be subscribing to AC1 just to play AC2 anyway.  The classes were very unique and I loved the non-human races (familiar from AC1).  Also, I never played the expansion so if some of my comments were not true about the final (er... now current) state of the game, then this is the reason why.

With that said, here's some of the things I didn't like about the game:

1. There are no NPCs and you can't enter any buiidings.  People throw around words like "immersive" but this doesn't feel immersive to me.

The response to my complaint is that the world was nearly destroyed and us, the players, are the only people left.  Any building left standing are ruiins.  However, it felt more like they didn't have time to implement these features or they really felt the community would become the only population necessary to make the game feel immersive.  Most of us have played many MMORPGs, and I can say that for the most part the player base does not make the games more immersive.  You need some touches from the devs to make you forget about that player next to you hopping around nearly naked.

As for the buildings being ruins, I would have thought a few of us would have pitched in and fixed up a few of them.  Without them, it feels like we're all ported into an arena rather than a world.

2. The game felt like it was made with console play as a future possibility.  I got the sense that some executive said, "Lets make sure we design this with consoles in mind."  AC2 was ahead of its time in this respect, I'll give you that.  It was probably the first MMORPG that thought it was a possibility.  Keep in mind that I have no articles or quotes that proves this.  This is my opinion of how the game presented itself to me.  This is how I remember the game -- it took out complexity to be console ready.  The thing is, it may now be more complex than most current MMORPGs.  I'll have to see if my opionion changes after playing it again.

I also think that some of my negativity comes from someone playing AC1 then playing AC2.  AC2 felt very different from AC1.  If the expectation was an updated AC1, then that expectation was not met.  That doesn't make it a bad game, but it may be one reason why the game failed -- people weren't expecting what AC2 delivered.  I don't know that this makes the game ahead of its time... it might have been more of a marketing failure than a game design failure.

I actually don't remember too much about combat other than it was beneficial to group with others... even one other... after a certain level in the game.  This is a good thing, especially compared to most other MMORPGs today.  I also remember being impressed with the animations in the game at the time.  I specifically remember the diving animations as you jumped into the water.  They may not be that impressive any longer, but they are probably still better than TSW (ouch, cheap shot... but allowed because I bought it).

Again, before you go ripping my head off, I will be playing this game (after the new year -- too many steam games to finish now).  I am looking forward to making another Lugian Tactician or a Tumerok Healer.

The two biggest detractors to AC2s success was that

1. it was Asherons Call 2.

2. It wasnt Asherons Call 1.

Asherons Call wasnt popular, so it didnt have the pull making very diffecult to gain a following...and the fact that AC1 players like me were hounding them about how they bastardized the name by leaving out everything that was both great and unique about AC1...it gained a bad rep fast for basically just taking the name of a previous game and using it to try to gain players.

AC2 had the best graphics of its time, one of the better crafting of its time(only bested by SWG), it also had a few innovations, too bad it wasnt made for AC1 players and instead was one of the first games to push MMORPGs from sandbox to themepark by cheapining the sandbox enviorment.

AC2 is far from themepark. There is no linear quest hub or anything like that. There is a huge world, you explore and do what you want.

The biggest detractor to the game was the fact that Microsoft didn't allow proper dev time, and forced a bunch of b.s. into the game that didn't work properly. The GUN server controlling chat, friends lists, etc was something forced on Turbine by MS and they simply didn't work. Going for a month or so without reliable chat killed the game very early on. Additionally, the sound system MS wanted where music would change a flourish depending on what was going on the screen. Unfortunately, hardly any sound cards supported the feature, thus many were forced to play without sound (actually toggling it off) so that it wouldn't lag their system.

From the get-go the dev team working on AC2 said it was going to be very different from AC1, and those who refused to listen were very disappointed. It was their own fault though. In many ways, I felt they saw how many of the systems in AC1 weren't going to be sustainable in the long run. AC1 was far too focused on extended character planning from the get-go and it was extremely easy to gimp yourself. Magic was far too important in AC1, and not taking life and item magics made things very tough. Granted some of that has changed, but the damage was already done. Finally, unattended macroing really hurt the game in the long run.

Jessica Mulligan made a keynote speech at Turbine Nation '04. She made a comment, and this is paraphrased "Asheron's Call 1 is the second job, while AC2 is the game you pick up and play quickly". AC1 is a very unique game for it's time, but it also demanded far too much of your free time for the game to feel like a "hobby". AC2 was supposed to be the more hobby type game.

I agree that AC2 was a first step in the world of themepark gaming, but AC2 is far from themepark in it's own right.

What always amuses me about these discussions of why AC2 failed being linked to AC1 players expectations is that AC1 players are now begging for an AC3. They will hate it too most likely since they don't actually want another AC game. They just want AC1 with better graphics and the possibility of more players so turbine doesn't can there game like the had AC2. Rumour is that AC1 had less subs than AC2 when they originally cancelled AC2. At least that was the case before they opened up the AC2 server to AC1 subscribers.

Its not even close to themepark far from it. Its maybe not AC1 sanbox lvl but its alot further away from themepark.

Your totally free no instance no npcs in quest hubs with !-? above head no guidance where to go no map with big signs saying where to go its a sandbox with superb graphics even for todays standard for a 10year old game you can play in 1080p

Asherons call 2 is great mmo now we just need a better stable server.

You get Asheron's Call 1, then you can play AC2 for free. Someone said you could get a free trial and play both like that but I dunno, I have a sub to AC1.

What happens when you log off your characters????.....

The reason why AC1 isn't more successful is probably linked to the payment model....Even in the free trial, Turbine damands a credit card......Turbine has simple (maybe even unintentionally) made AC1 pretty much a turn off for even us old school MMOers.....Bringing back AC2 was Turbines way of boosting AC1's sales.....I think alot of us would have liked to have tried it but Im jsut not willing to drop 10 bucks to try a ten year old game that looks severely outdated.
