I would say yes and no. If I liked a game a lot that I felt I would put a lot of time in, the subscription never turned me off. If a game didn't feel quite right to me though, I wouldn't pay a subscription, at least not for a long time.

There have only been a couple of games that fell into the category of not being really worth the subscription to me: Vanguard and ToR. In the former game, though when I got around to playing it, it was really fun, there weren't enough people on and there was no real development. In the case of ToR, it is too linear and non-MMO like.

I also play WoW much more often than I would either of those two games so I am coming from it from the viewpoint of someone wanting a secondary MMO. I would prefer not to pay full sub price for a game that I play far less.

In both of those cases, if there had been a cheaper sub option, I would have stayed subbed.

Playing MUDs and MMOs since 1994.

No, I quit a game when it gets to be not fun for me whether it is p2p, p2p, or b2p.  For example, I bought rift for 4.99 on steam and played less than a week.  Playe TOR until I ran out of content to do and they didn't add content fast enough so I didn't sub.  It had nothing to do with the 14.99 as I still wouldn't have had anything to do if it had been 5$ a month.  I quit playing GW2 after a couple of months and it has no sub.  Played UO for a year at the original 9.99, then when EQ came out, I was subbed for close to 5 years, and when wow came out I was subbed for almost 7 years.  If the game is worth it, to me, I will pay for it.  Of course I would have played EQ and WoW for free as well:)

I have never quit a game because of the subscription cost. In some cases, I've been willing to spend more then the subscription fee in order to enjoy a particular game even more through additional subscriptions (pre-CU SWG: looking at you).

If a game is fun enough, I'll pay.

That said, I do prefer having a free trial being made available to me before jumping in with my credit card. I recently subbed to both Rift and Eve because they let me test it out first.

a 15 buck a month subscription does not bother me not in the least. Heck I spend that in 2 days on lunch alone.  If you are that cheep to not be able to afford 15 bucks a month you probably don't have the cash to have internet.

Honestly the only reason why I don't pay a sub is if I don't like a game.

Now that I say this some games that have a sub I would not play like swtor, yes it is free to play but with a lot of lockouts and imho that game shoudl bee buy to play.

You make a good game I will sub up, if not well there are plenty of games to play.

i would.  The problem is not the 15$ a month.

The problem is if you are constantly buying new games, and trying out other games, it get very expensive try to keep the subscription for multiple games.

Agreed with the vast majority in this thread. $15 a month is not a barrier to entry in the least. If it's good, I'll play. If it's bad, I won't.

I would rather a subscription mmorpg. I despise the so called free to play models with cash shops.

I would actually enjoy seeing a shift in the market toward free to buy, free trial (level 20) but a sub cost afterward.  Thats a ballsy move, and it shows a ton of confidence in your product.  That said, I do think that F2P has a place.  I think that a solid F2P game would do amazingly well on the console market.  The entire premise behind that market is ease of play, and being able to jump in and play without any overhead would be great.  Happy Wars is a small example of that, and its working quite well.  I enjoy the game, and have played it exclusively lately.  For their trouble, they earned 10 bucks from me in their cash shop.  The fact that you use MSP makes it so much better because its an easier way for most people to get money into their hands.

It takes a ton of smart balance to make a cash shop work.  But for PC gaming, a sub is really the way to go.  But a sub game with no box cost and a free, lengthy, trial would go miles toward getting more players back into that market.  Hell, its working for Wizard 101.  That is, more or less, what that game is.

I get the feeling a lot of the people on here are of an older kind. Right now sub fees just aren't an issue based on the fact that i'm now in employment. But I remember when I was a kid, and why Runescape was the absoloute shit back then. The sub for membership was something like £3.50, and one of the few things I could afford being a kid. The low sub price is one of the major things I attribute to that games success. So while sub price seems to not be an issue for mmorpg.com's user base, I expect certain other communities would have a much different opinion on its importance.

No the price of the sub would't change a thing, i would have stayed with "x" MMORPG if the gameplay BEFORE level cap would have lasted longer, there is nothing worse than hitting level cap in a mounth of casual play, and the game is 90% dead then (getting fed end game content every 6 mounths don't count and pvp is shit in most games so leave that out to)..

Depends on the percieved value of what I'm subscribing to. I wouldn't pay 15 a month for a buggy semi supported older MMO but I would pay 15 a month for, lets say Rift? if i ever decided I wanted to return

There's no simple yes or no answer for me. It all depends on the amount of fun and the game itself

It's not that 15 bucks is a lot of money, it's what I get for them i calculate with

We live in a fantasy world, a world of illusion. The great task in life is to find reality.

Subscriptions are never a determining factor in whether I keep playing an MMO only if I am to give an MMO a try.

If your idea of a Sandbox is open FFA Full Loot PvP, full crafted world with minimal support for anything combat then your sandbox ideas are bad! Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!

yes.

So if you want to play EQ2, WoW, Rift, SWTOR, EVE, Vanguard, LoTRO all at the same time throught the month.. it's only $105 a month right..... Still chump change for everyone?  hmmmmmmm

What? all at same time? is that even a serious question?

I played TSW for 3months and tired of it.  Now that it has dropped its sub, and has gone B2P, I have gone back to the game.  And, I will not object to dropping $5 here or $10 there for new content.

Its not so much the amount of the sub fee as the sub fee itself....WIth f2p games I come and go as I please...If I get bored I simply move to another game...A few months later I often come back to that game that I left when I feel like playing again....The f2p option gives me the choice of when i want to play and when I want to pay....Not "your 30 days are up" and you have to pay to continue....Also there just aren't any games out anymore that are worth a monthly imo.

Honestly, sub price has never even been a consideration for me. It's $15. You can barely buy one decent plate of food for $15. If you're so broke that you have to even consider $15, you shouldn't be spending it on MMO's. If I play the game for a few weeks an hour, my $15 was well spent.

I'd prefer games to bring back the old EQ Legends server model where players can pay more to play on a server that doesn't have poor people on it.

I was thinking the same thing. If you're playing that many MMOs you're not really "playing" them, they're just on your hard drive.

Anyways, fifty cents a day is squat. Hell, that used to only get you a couple rounds in the old arcades; talk about cheap entertainment. Price has never kept me from not subbing to an MMO. Only crap games and the neverending sea of titles that follow the familiar formula like lemmings have kept me away.

The price for an MMO subscription should have gone up after all these years. Realistically though, that would be hard to justify considering the stagnated state of the genre.

So many people fail to comprehend.

Yes, $15 is nothing.

However, if you wanted to play MANY games, that nothing $15 x amount of games you really wanted to play is not cheap.

This is to MOST people on the world.

To actually answer the OP's question, yes, if the monthly fee was cheaper, I would more than likely try out more than a couple games. It's not really my thing to pay $115 a month to play a few monthly fee type games.

This WOULD help the game out instead of making them go F2P to try and save themselves.

Wish many people would actually use their head.
