Tough call. Torn between Anarchy Online and Uncharted Waters. A lot of honourable mentions, though.

EQ is what I would consider the best with EQ2 second. Since WoW the genre has been crap and going down hill. Too much hand holding and dumbing the genre down to the point that I can watch a football game and interact with the family without ever having anyone in the group, if I'm in a group with some of these supposed MMOs, ever knowing I'm not paying attention. PAC-Man took more concentration and tactics than most games since WoW.

Originally posted by Axehandle FFXI was the absolute best... But only in the first 3 years. Once the botters started getting out of hand the economics of the game went to hell. I loved camping NMs, getting together with LSs for O hat runs, lvling in groups (I prefer solo now though). It was my first mmorpg and no other game has had such an affect on me.
WoW came close but it didnt take the number one spot for me.
Howbeit; when FFXIV came out I was hoping for the same but better and was completely dissappointed and canceled the game after the first 3 days... Sad. Lets see if ARR does well once it gets out on PS3 too. |

For me this one is easy: Everquest IT wasnt my first MMO but it was the one I knew was my home the first five minutes in the game....THrown into a world with no directions, no tutorials, no symobls over NPCs heads, and a rough brutal world just waiting for me to explore it......When I started there were very few max level players and it was such an accomplishment that it used to be broadcast whenever someone hit max level.....We had to work together with other players to survive and everyone had skills/abilities that were valuable.....No other game has captured what EQ did..... |

SWG Early DaOC (pre TOA and the buffbot craze) AC1 (I'd play this again if they upgraded their GFX) Vanguard

I'd have to say Ultima Online, but that's also partially biased by the fact that I already loved the single-player Ultima RPG series. Still, Origin did a fantastic job of carrying over those "sandbox" elements from the Ultima series into a MMORPG environment, and it was almost perfectly executed. I'd say a very close runner-up for "Best I ever played" would be Dark Age of Camelot. I have many fond memories of my adventures in the realms of DAoC. |

WoW has kept me entertained off and on for 8 years, so definitely the best in my mind. I'm taking a break currently, but I expect I'll be back AGAIN in the next couple months sometime. I don't think any MMO will ever give me such prolonged entertainment ever again, and the only other games I played extensively were Asheron's Call for three years, DAoC for a year, and FFXI for a year. Nowadays, I'm lucky if I don't get bored in two weeks with every new MMO. :( |

I loved SWG before they ruined it. My first MMO was EQ1 and I loved it until lvl cap and LFG made me quit CoX was one of the funnest me and my wife played I like SWTOR but they wasted so much time and money on the "story telling" |

Eq1 - the only game that I've been playing for 13 years and still like it daoc (vanilla) - was buggy and unbalanced but also the best large scale RvR combat period ac1 - skill system and freedom Vanguard - loved the world and classes, true successor to eq1 AoC (vanilla) - the original combat system was the best I've seen in any game period Wow (vanilla) - fun and smooth engine Rift - best flexibility on class system, cool dynamic invasions, I liked the zone design, also storm legion is one of the best expansions period tsw - skill system and awesome lore and setting GW2 - one of the prettiest games period uo - good sandbox shadowbane - city building alliances, sieges Ps1 - large scale action battles with actual strategy (sorry ps2 is a letdown for me) CoX/CoV - best character creation, loved the movement skills |
