Originally posted by evilastro Not to take anything away from GW2, but you really must admit it was a pretty lousy year for new MMORPGs. It is completely unsuprising that they and other sites would pick the one new MMO that didn't fall flat on its face directly after launch.

It's always more fun to hate on a game than to actually try to like it and see for yourself if the criticism is valid. (or still valid after subsequent updates) |

so i dont want to be THAT guy, but im going to say GW2 is FLONKING terrible. The graphics, crafting, and storyline are parts to be rewarded, they have done very well with those, but it is not very fun, all you do is try to find events, swing at creatures with the same moves, and do it all over again. Dungeons have no structure just try to keep yourself alive, and there isnt much to do. It doesnt feel like a very fun good mmmo, ive hit level 60 and i am BORED. I keep thinking "it gets better, it gets better" but it blows IMO. It is not an intriguing or fun game, and there is ultimately not a very wide array of rewards to work for in end game or all game.

If you see no good or you see no bad in a game, chances are you are bias. |

Sorry, but if your looking as Polish > actualty game design, you really aren't very good for judging the quality of a game.
As an old D2 fan, D3 is quite an insult. It seems to miss the point entirely of what made D2 great. |

Its the best of the year since there are no better ones around probably .....SWTOR was the game of the year aswell. Dont care about magazines and their reviews anyway....
"I have to say PlanetSide 2 definitely wins for the best MMOFPS, hands-down" What bigger MMOFPS got released this year....what a bullshit article. |

Originally posted by FARGIN_WAR Maybe you're a bit daft to realize it, but SW:TOR launched last year December. Though it would technically be cannidate to this years's rewards just because it came after last years ones (too late to be considered), nobody thought it was near quality to even do so.
The Secrete World did okay, and is doing a buy-to-play model similar to Guild War 2's model. The game is expanding itself, and releasing content, but push come to shove it's nowhere near content rich as GW2 is.
And, just to point out to a few major MMORPG's, there's been a handful of expansions for EVE Online, Rift, LotRO, and WoW. Each of these games gaining a huge boost because of this.
A bad year for MMORPG's? No, that was last year that ended in a pile of.... But this year saw great games launch, great expansions launch, and was an all around good year (even with 38 Studios and City of Heros both crashing).
P.S. This is all mentioning only "Western MMO's", as there was several dozen "Eastern MMO's" that launched as well. Usual stuff though it was.
P.P.S. Notice how this same website picked Rift as best expansion, EVE as runner up. Neither LotRO nor WoW Panda was mentioned for expansion of the year. That's saying something about how well those "niche" games are doing with their content for their players.

Originally posted by FARGIN_WAR Was it? What MMOs have released in recent years that were worth a damn besides Rift? You seem to be lumping me into some kind of group that I have nothing to do with... I am critical of it, sure, but I also say lots of good stuff. Maybe you just think that anyone who is critical in the slightest is a 'hater'? (what a lazy lazy unimaginative label that is, especially when used to dismiss and attack others) There seems to be a severe case of siege mentallity around here right now... You need to understand that there are more then two colours being worn in this 'war' though and stop being so defensive. Have you actually anything to say about the point I made, rather then focusing pointlessly on some fight that is really only happening in your head? |

Originally posted by Eir_S Yeah again keyword new, not old games with expansions. TERA, launched in Korea last year and got a lukewarm reception, launched in the US and EU in the spring, and once again got a lukewarm reception. TOR launched at the very end of last year with much fanfare and was given game of the year before it was even a month old. Then all this year hemorrhaged subscribers and was forced to go free to play before it was eight months old. And now seems to even be pissing players off with the way Bioware designed the FTP plan. TSW, even the games own creators say the game performed poorly and was soundly trounced by GW2, game is now free to play. The only new MMO that launched this year and seems to still be performing well financially is GW2. So considering that three out of four new MMOs suffered loss of subscribers, layoffs, and two out of three ended up having to change their entire subscription model, I stand by my opinion that it was a rough year for new MMO companies, a lousy year for MMO players as most of the new crop of games sucked, and that GW2 was the only clear choice for best MMO of the year.

Originally posted by FARGIN_WAR Im sorry to disappoint you, but at this time of the year, im pretty sure SWTOR have more active players and is making a lot more money than GW2, a game of the year who is keep losing active players everyday, faster than D3, good thing for Anet that is B2P. |

Without doubt I think GW2 is the best mmo of the year. They created a HUGE world with a lot to see and explore. They implemented a really fun open questing and tag free mob system. The visuals are beautiful fully maxed, and characters look good and move well. Sound is good too.
All GW2 has to do is fill in the gaps. I don't need the holiday stuff so much. I'd rather they improve on the crafting, add housing, add vanity tabs and either add a lot more clothing and armor to the game or to the store.
But sadlly, most mmos seem to have a different idea for what makes a good expansion. I can still hope though. |

Do you think there's any correlation between that statement and the fact that GW2 is a subscription free, buy to play top quality full on MMO that they had to bump heads with? I guess I'm asking this... if GW2 had never existed, would those other MMOs still done so poorly? Could make for some interesting speculation. |

Originally posted by Terranah They're looking hard into housing (it's been stated) but if/when they release that it's going to be something memorable, not a pasted on crappy housing system. It may not be a "build yours up block by block" like... what's that latest one, Rift? Absolutely amazing imo. It may not be like that, but I'm willing to wager it'll be worth the wait.
Also, watch for vanity/clothing tabs. They've been getting a lot of requests for those, and they tend to respond well to sensible requests. |
