Going to be amazed if the game has more than 60000 active subs by feb.  I think just like the original that DF:UW will garner a very very hardcore dedicated following.  But not grow beyond that.

I'd say they would be lucky to get 10k, 5k more realsitically, the market for games like DF is very VERY small.

Could you been any more misinformed? Darkfall 1 sold over 150,000 copies with almost  500,000 players trying the trials over the last 3 years.

Uh huh.

And out of those 150k copies sold, how many even made it through the first 30 days before leaving, never paying a sub?

Out of those 500k trials, how many actually bought the game afterwards? Obviously not very many, if 500k tried the game, but 150k was the total copies sold over the games lifetime.

Once again, this has nothing to do with the quality of the game.  Say what you will about the game but Darkfall had pretty high retention rates.  It was really only the grind that was getting to people as well as people deciding to sit out and wait for the highly touted successor, Unholy Wars.

Sorry but I've got to call you out on this one. DarkFall had a very poor retention rate. DarkFall's population only stayed relatively strong within it's first year because of the increased skill gains+summer update and CtS Expac as well as server transfer. Back then, Clans of 100-200 members were pretty common, and most of these clans had a decent level of activity. Fast-forward to 2010-2011 (long before Wipe was ever mentionned, along with DF2.0) and the average amount of players per clan ranged from 30-100 (ignoring the smaller clans), and this number continued to dwindle down to the point where players complained daily about the difficulty of finding PvP,  and you're telling me DF had high player retention rates?

Bollocks.

Haha please don`t play day one, as I don`t want an F5 competition with more players than nessecary.

Let us that have been killed and clean looted a thousand times take the first hit. When the mayhem from the first days starts to settle, then you can start looking for a clan. Pick a clan with a city/hamlet and join the awesomeness called darkfall.

Can i have a (credible) source for  that ?

I ask because the only quote i ever heard about "500.000 players" was from Tasos and he said that there were 500.000 people INTERESTED in the game ;  and he based that on the number of people subscribed to the Darkfall forum.

A forum subscription does not equal a sale or even trial for that matter...at least to my experience.

If it had "pretty high" retention rates, you'd be telling me what those rates were. In fact, you wouldn't need to because Tasos would have been using them to gloat.

And retention rates have EVRYTHING to do with the quality of a game. The higher the quality and value, the less people leave.

[mod edit]

I know retention was high from experience.  I played with the same people for a few years.  We were facing the same enemies for many years.  Yes, good retention does speak volumes for the quality of the game.  I was not arguing that.

[mod edit]

So you know retention was high because a limited amount of people you knew in the game stuck around?

I speak to my experience, yes.

Let's make this clearer. Just from your own info, out of 500k trials ( which were not even available throughout the games lifetime ), only 150k sales ( total, including before and after trials were available ) can be confirmed ( not even subsequent subs, just initial sales ).

This means that while 150k who tried it thought the game was worth at least buying ( and again, not even 150k because the trial came well after launch and well after the majority of initial purchases, but I'm humoring you with your own numbers for simplicities sake )., 350k thought it wasn't and walked away without giving up a dime.

500k - 150k = a mere 25% of people who tried DF bought a copy.

Out of those, how many stayed? THAT IS WHAT YOU NEED TO ANSWER.

EDIT: You know what, let's be generous.

Let's say 25% of that 25% continued to sub for at least one month.

That's 37,500 total subs in the lifetime of the game. And that's only for those who stayed for at least one month past purchase.

Then that number drops again, 2 months after, 3 months after, 6 months after, etc. ( these are the common amounts of time people will purchase upfront at the time of initial game purchase if they REALLY like the game at that particular time ).

Honestly, if you could prove to me DF had even 5,000 currently active subscribing players when the servers finally went offline, I'd consider you a successful DF defender.

I'm glad to see that Darkfall has affected you so badly.

I can feel your anger - let it alllll out......

And at all the people saying "Prove it had xxxxx players or yyyyyy subscribers" - why do you care?  You're clearly only here to bash a game that you either played and quit because you got bashed, or have never played and just like to troll.

I hope you're having fun.

I know I will be when Darkfall: Unholy Wars launches :)

No, no. I am merely here to wipe the fog from those rose colored glasses.

EA CEO John Riccitiello's on future microtransactions: "When you are six hours into playing Battlefield and you run out of ammo in your clip, and we ask you for a dollar to reload, you're really not very price sensitive at that point in time...We're not gouging, but we're charging."

This will be number 1  in a top ten of, 'MMOs bailed out by a lead developers dad', list.

If you buy this on faith alone, you deserve to let this lot steal your money, really you do. You've had enough warnings.

Success means a game grows and sticks around longterm. It also means that a profitable business models means the developers don't have to change payment models around to try and squeeze the playbase. That's kinda obvious, unless you like companies nickle and diming you.  Then again is this the new TSW fans argument?

*Who cares how many it sold?!?! I'm not a, 'suit'!!!, 'suits' are bad, I'm cool!!!!*

Different I suppose, I'll give you that.

High sub numbers have nothing to do with game quality (Not directed to you Mr. Cakes).

Yes and no.  If a game is of good to high quality then the game will have high sub numbers.  And by high I'm not refering to WoW's or GW2's high sub numbers.  If the game lacks anthing enticing or to make it stand from the rest then it will fail in the sub number dept.

People who cite that sub numbers don't matter are the fanbois who are defending their precious game.  Sub numbers provide a high amount of creditability for a game.  People who play the worst games (like DDO) will continually cite that subs don't matter and that their game is the best.

While sub numbers aren't the end all be all they certainly do have a high amount of creditability for a game.

It's the best Hardcore Sandbox I've ever played but it's definitely not my favorite mmo. DAOC still holds dear to my heart.

Players looking forward to the sequel of the most challenging, skillbased, brutal, competitive and heart thumping MMO to grace the genre in over 10 years is hardly looking at things with rose tinted glasses.

And there you go, bringing EvE into the discussion again.

No, that's Henrik of Mortal Online's claim to fame.

See, even I can defend Darkfall when it warrants it.

EA CEO John Riccitiello's on future microtransactions: "When you are six hours into playing Battlefield and you run out of ammo in your clip, and we ask you for a dollar to reload, you're really not very price sensitive at that point in time...We're not gouging, but we're charging."
