a perk for eq2/lotro is that they have the best communities of the games being mentoned, by a rather large margin

Originally posted by Rattus This is sort of where I am leaning toward based on the feedback so far. I agree that most people here take the little things for granted that are second nature to us. I sent a text asking which he prefers, Science Fiction or Fantasy which ultimately will be the decider :-) lol. |

And the choice has been made. He prefers a fantasy world. Lord of the Rings it is. Thanks folks :-).

It is not a good pick!!!!!
LoL! Imagine how he'll be lost on the likes of Loremaster/Burglar/Minstrel. Ffs, the Loremaster is one of the most advanced classes I have ever seen(and the tutorials in LoTR:O-are there any? I sure as hell don't remember them...). Yes, the Community is Great. Yes, the IP is Great. But it is NOT newb friendly. Hell even Champion/Guardian are way more advanced than their counterparts are in other games. If your friend is of the type easy now/hard later, I'd recommend WoW/Rift. Maybe SWTOR if what is said about tutorials is true(idk, haven't played it). Rift is nice both for learner and the learnee(and downright awesome in duo mode). WoW is...WoW. As Vanilla as they come. What has been said of Community is true tho, even communities on RP servers such as Argent Dawn tend to be rather blunt/rude. However if your friend is of the hard now/easy never type, then I'd suggest Aion/LoTR:O. Aion-spiritmaster, nuff said(how about getting lost on your very own keyboard :D). LoTR:O-Loremaster, nuff said(how about killing yourself with skills NOBODY mentioned that they require sacrifice of health/morale :D). That is about as direct as if Klitschko punched you(:D :D). It depends on your friend. From easy camp, I'd suggest Rift. From hard camp, I'd suggest Aion(LoTR:O has pretty stupid engine and combat is dull because of it{Gamebryo fail right?}). It is up to your friend now... |

Aion - All the basics are there and completely free to play so if the new player decides he or she doesn't like MMORPG's you are out - zero dollars.

I liked MMOs better when gamers didn't play them, and just geeks did. |

WoW is, IMO, the ultimate Themepark MMO tutorial.
Playing: GW2 and DayZ

Lord of the RIngs Online (LOTRO). Theve dont lots of tweaking to get new players involved and I think they do a great job of it. Side note- I played the 20-level free version of WoW when it first broke and was not able to party with anyone (so I gave up) without a sub. Not sure if they've changed that? If it's still that way it might be a put-off.
*edit* oops! i see you picked! nice |

World of Warcraft, hands down. It was never very "difficult" but they've been slowly dumbing it down to the point of obsurdity. It's like the McDonalds of MMO's now. Accessible, possibly addictive, no real value.

I think you still have to go with WoW on this one.....For some reason it really captures alot of beginners and makes them feel comfortable.....

The choice would have been WOW if it wasn't for the level 20 cap. I hated Aion, so there is no way I'm going to have a beginner try that.

WoW is probably a good choice but another option no one has mentioned is Ryzom. During my years of playing Ryzom I ran across a few players that played Ryzom as their first or only MMo and enjoyed it. Its also F2P for quite a while and very friendly to Duo play --- its skill based and any player can train any skill so if both players train some healing actions they can heal one another even if in tank gear. Very enjoyable game for 2-3 months even if you don't get into it for years like i did.

Well he's not going to get far in lotro for free. They cut you off from all quests after the newbie area. I would say swtor if he likes story at all.

Might wanna try Darkfall UW, when it's realeased tomorrow :D Very noobie friendly. You will just get your a** kicked every other time you go out there to kill your goblins like a proper WoW carebear. Yea, well sarcasm... But tbh I would say it would be awesome game for anyone who likes FPS games and likes that there is some skill involved other than facerolling keyboard and hoging potions. On Darkfall you actually feel like you are making a differece to the world. Your clan/alliance is actually shaping the game world by ruling certain areas. It just feels real. Having crap in your pans every 30 minutes when someone suddenly jumps on you from a tree. But if you are just looking for a usual level-based grinder game with dungeons and all that "fancy" stuff that anyone can be good at, I would say RIFT does a pretty good job at that, also Guild Wars 2 is nice for that, but the dungeons aren't as good as on RIFT. |
