Haven't played either of the Everquests, so I figured I would start with the first one since my computer is pretty crappy. I was just posting to see if anyone else has a server to recommend or any advice to give so I can have the best experience possible. Also what classes are friendly to noobs? Thanks in advance! |

I am partial to the magician, I love pet classes and I think that is one of the best pet classes out there. The necro is also good but in my opinion its harder to play correctly.

I can't remember the name of the new server but that may be a good way to go... but chances are population will be low for low levels regardless.
As far as new player friendly classes, the game has become much easier with the addition of mercs. If you get the top level merc (warrior) it will easily take you to level 50 or so which will give you a lot of time to practice the class, although healing may not be the best way to go.
As far as before mercs new player friendly classes would likely be ones that could solo the easiest.
In this case I would probably say necro and magician. You may consider a beastlord as well. Buying all of the spells can be costly for a new player... even buying the materials to summon pets may become expensive early on. If you do choose a caster limit the spells you purchase, purchase spells you will use frequently. If you choose mage, you may want to purchase 1 or 2 pet types rather than spend the money on all 4.
Necro is probably a better choice to level longer, and easier to start off as they get a pet at lvl 1 not level 2. Also, a necro can farm the bone chips very easily in field of bones/kurns tower located near the Iksars starting city of Cabilis.
A beastlord will not get a pet right away... I do not know what level any more... it was 9 when I played. This would be my choice of character as you will be able to do everything needed. You can slow (not the best but you can), you can heal yourself and your warder (not so much you), you get debuffs, and buffs. Also you will play a melee dps role with the addition of the pet, you can always back off to heal or cast if you get low on hp and let the pet tank. |

In order to use mercs, you have to have one of their latest expansion packs, I cant remember which one, but you can't use them without it. I have to say that I loved my magician to death, it was my favorite class and I got several to 50+.

Yeah, I played all classes to 85. My favorites were monk/sham combo. Which would probably explain why I would suggest beastlord as the pet class I would choose as a new player. |

Vox is the newer server it be a good place to start. As for what to play thats very personal choice pick a class that is the style you like. There are usally a shortage of Bards, Enchanters, and Cleric's on any server. For combo's SK and healer merc, Shammy and Tank Merc are both combos I enjoy a lot. Mage is good as a caster you can solo very well. |

Merc's are at level 1 unless you play a progression server.

Think you can get them at level 1. They are not really controllable, other than setting them on balanced aggressive etc. But as someone stated you may need to purchase an expansion for it to become available.
From what I remember the only mercs worth having were warrior or cleric. Warrior will take you through low levels. As you get higher the warrior will die faster to mobs, and at this point the cleric would probably benefit you more.
I did play on the Progression X guild server trakanon, where they only allowed us to use a cleric merc and level in the expansion appropriate zones. So, it is possible to level with the low level mercs.
However, I remember having 3 or 4 free accounts that I could buy mercs with, however, the mercs were very useless with the free accounts, as they were low tier mercs. |

On my 60ish level cleric, I use the warrior merc and have no problems keeping him alive to mobs. At least to controlled fights, once I start getting multiple mobs, it can become interesting. On my 54 magician I use a cleric and let my pet do all the tanking, seems to work well around that level to. I am still old school though and enjoy playing on the original world. Edit note. I dont think my mercs are the low level ones though. They cost me a fortune to use lol. |

Originally posted by Gymrat313 Sub to the game for one month. Use that time to test out all the classes for free. The beauty of EQ is that each class is truly different. I'd recommend the VOX server - its a new server and has a healthy low end population. Many guilds looking for new (and returning) members. I tried the hybrids because I heard they were a good balanced class but found out I dont like magic users. Go into the game with an open mind. They dont make MMOs like EQ anymore so its experience is unique. The game is tough and forces you to be patient. You aren't going to "rush" to max level here. Expect to die, ALOT until you learn to take your time. There are no more corpse runs and death is just XP loss (which is precious so it balances). You get mercs automatically as long as you are not on a progression server. Mercs allow you to molo (solo with mercs) if you so choose or you can join a guild. The community is more mature (many 40+ users) and friendly so its easy to get your questions answered. There are over 300+ zones to the point it was overwhelming to decide where to go. There is a 'golden path' for leveling that you can follow in Crescent Reach that comes complete with 'hot zones' for added XP. While end game exists (great raids and group content) to me EQ is all about the adventure and no other MMO delivers that experience better. Hope you enjoy. Look me up (Damidge) on Vox server. level 59 Beserker. Ill help you out ;-)
