GW2 is a very pretty game, but I found after a month playing I was completely bored with it too. I wouldn't call it a fail for me. It was like buying a PS3 game and playing it til I beat it. Worth my $60, but probably won't ever play it again. I haven't had any luck with any free to play or buy to play game. Still waiting for a good sandbox mmo.

What happens when you log off your characters????.....

I think this is probably the best way to explain it for me as well. Except, that one day you can hop into again and there will be more content that you may enjoy (player/guild housing, guild warfare, etc).

You ALMOST made me want to try Rift again... the sentiment lasted like 10 seconds or so. Then I remembered the poorly responsive combat and sub par animations. The very linear gameplay with only one starter area and the same zones you have to go through until you finally get access to the new "storm legion" content. All this reminded me why (for me) GW2 is a superior game and why I won't waste one more cent in Trion's borefest of a MMORPG.

Thanks, Elikal.  Nice write up.

I agree with many of the points you made.

For me, Guild Wars 2 represents the arcadification (yes I just invented that word) of the MMO.  Explanation: by tossing out depth and time commitment of traditional MMOs, ANET has created an MMO that would actually fit well into an Arcade.  I could see people tossing quarter after quarter into this game because it's gratification is instant......instant, yet short lived.  It is a game enjoyed to its fullest when played at its most casual....like a trip the the local mall.

Like any arcade title, once the initial spectactle loses its awe, the foundation begins to show.  And it's not a very sturdy one.  It reminds me of "Dragon's Lair" in a way.  A game that made more of an impact at its time because of its technical prowess than actual design.  Once you got past the fact that it was a laser-disc cartoon, the game ceased to really marvel.

Guild Wars 2 is the Pu Pu platter of MMOs.  It has a little of this, a little of that, but really not much of anything in particular.  The dish has great presentation, but it's not really a fullfilling meal.

This is the perfect game for someone entirely new to the genre.  But for vets?  Unless you are burnt out or want something entirely different, not so much.

There is very little character progression.  The combat is extremely limited as you are given only a handful of useful skills and attacks and those become boring rather quickly.  The dungeons (for me, at least) feel thrown together and extremely chaotic.

Everyone can perform any role because the game is designed for a quick in n out with little or no preparation/strategy.

As another user put it, it's a very "run n gun" MMO.

Scenery, locations, and world design are top notch...second to none.  The story?  Simple enough for the average eight year old to understand but shallow for those looking for something deeper.

People hyped this game to no end as the "saviour" to MMOs.  But instead, all it offered was a drive through in a restaurant crowded atmosphere.

But we should not blame ourselves for not liking it.  It is a different kind of game.  As different as Call of Duty is to the more strategic online shooters (such as Joint Operations).

Some like, some don't.

If you want that quick MMO experience in 60 minutes or less, this is the game for you.

If you are looking for something a bit more involved, a bit more traditional, look elsewhere.

The game does has depth, but not what you like, that is all. It is there for all to see. The reason for the amount of skills is you need to pick and choose wisely. In rift, with 4 bars of skills, it  was ridiculous since you  also could macro skills (so many were very conditional as to be useless).  I have tried many other games and found them lacking, games which people on this site have on a pedestal.

You shouldn't bame yourself for not liking it but neither should you blame A.Net or the people who actually like the game. It was a design choice on A.Net's part, much like what happens in every other MMO out there. No game is for everyone. But, do we need more than one thread on either side? I think not. it is just redundancy at it's finest.

That was the point I was trying to drive home.  It's a very fun game for what it is.  I just think a lot of people went in expecting something quite different.  As a result, some liked and some didn't.  If you are one of the latter....don't beat yourself up.  It's just a different type of game.

All this reminded me why (for me) GW2 is a superior game and why I won't waste one more cent in Trion's borefest of a MMORPG.

I leveled a harbinger (new soul, melee mage, its the most fun class i ever played in the last 13 years of gaming) character from 1-48 in 4 days of instant adventures, crazy fast Xp and also epic planar items rewards scaled to your level so you get awesome free gear as well as xp. Also winning a single match in battlegrounds gives you half a level of xp prior to level 50.

They obviously want players to be able to experience new content ASAP, it's worth noting that the 4 new souls are available at level 1 - so you get to experience the awesomeness immediately (yes the new souls are amazing).

They are a lot of GW2 like features, like quests that you get automatically as you travel and kill mobs, getting full Xp for low level content when you scale your character level down ( you could level to 50 in a level 14 area), you can experience raid dungeons solo or in a team of 2 players (called chronicles)..... It is a different game from what you remember.

The combat and animations feel awesome and responsive to me, maybe it's that new souls are just a lot more polished, but there have been a ton of patches and fixes since feb 2011.

either way, enjoy gw2, but thinking that storm legion is anything close to what the original game of Rift was when it released - is just  blasphemous in my opinion. For the record I hated Rift at launch, I thought it was a crappy wow clone, but over time it kept getting better, and finally with storm legion launch I can safely say that this is most likely the greatest expansion for a MMORPG game ever.

Again it's just one persons opinion, so take everything I say as that, and don't forget to always look on the bright side of life!

I would be bored too if Warrior and "VANGAURD" classes played the same.

Pretty much why I added "(for me)" in my post :)

I'm pretty sure we can enjoy our games without "peeing into the other person's cheerios" - that's why I don't post on the Rift forums either, because I don't see the point of annoying people of a game I don't play and have no interest in playing by advertising a game I play there.

Have fun in Rift - I know I will in GW2 :)

2. exaggerated publicity; hoopla.
3. swindle, deception, or trick.

This is good news, I like to see more and more people tire of themeparks. That's how change happens.

But thats how it is, I know that I do not go onto other game forums to post why I moved on or why I hate the game or why it failed *FOR ME* but I guess DMKano has not yet gotten his point across and is not done telling people how shitty the game is *Shrug*

I agree with a lot of what you said.  But I wouldn't call it a big "fail".  I enjoyed leveling my first character at least.

I think the combat is REALLY boring.  Spamming the same few weapon locked skills over and over again really isn't a strong design.  I guess they chose that route to make balancing PVP easier?  I don't mind being limited in skills in a game like D3, but then again they let you choose the skills you use, regardless of weapon type.

It's a nice world, but I also prefer the trinity.

And the events don't create any social experience either.... The last 20 level zones are tough, some impossible to solo, and I felt like I was way too easy overpowered by mobs. So endgame felt more like a chore to me. I wasn't even able to finish my stories, because in the last level the story instances are too tough for me, and nobody ever joined me to help. :/

That is my summary. A lot of weakness and inability to bo social - sound right? Heard several game is too hard complaints a while back..

Getting a a giant whale into space by yourself would be easier than trying to form a team in this game. People are not social in this game at all. Those of us who were silly enough to think "well this is an mmo, maybe i'll try teamiung up with people and maybe make a friend or two" have tried hundreds of times to simply team up with people, but failed to. the only thing worse than this game is its community. You can even see it in the forums how nasty GW2 fans can be, blindly defending this game's flaws. You shouldn't have to bend over backwards to be social in an MMO

I have had no issues getting a team. Maybe it is just you  or just me, it is not that hard - /map 'LFG to do.......'  it works everytime.

I find people very social - I have been bouncing servers, helping friends who just started in the game. People are very friendly and helpful. Not sure what you are doing wrong.....

I like you Elikal, I really do, but it takes you so damn long to evaluate games, 6 weeks for GW2? Come on, it was an obvious "fail" right after a couple of hours.

Tbh., I give MMOs a chance much longer. I played Vanguard for almost a year, always on and off in the last half year. I played WAR 5 months and SWTOR 4 months before I stopped, and heck even went back for a bit now. I tend to give MMOs a long chance to grow on me or change via patches and updates. Same with GW2. In all these MMOs I DO have fun a while, otherwise I would not stay. All of these have/had good qualities. It's always a mixed bag. Hardly any MMO is entirely trash or bad. GW2 like other AAA MMOs surely has a lot of good qualities, but with some things I just feel unwell with them over time. Like the grindy nature of the "events" or the combat system. I felt well at first, but after a time I began to feel how simplistic and boring it is.

As I said, just from my perspective. But I tend to give MMOs chances. So I return after a break and updates, giving it new chances again and again. I always have hope the devs get things better, so I try it out again. Hence my kinda repetitive posts. I see things more sharp and clear and feel I want to write about my insights anew, when I think I can say it more clearly than before.

As to the same-ish feel of classes: *shrug* it felt to me like that. If I take classes from WOW or EQ2 or even LOTRO, I felt the classes played more distinct. Especially the WOW classes. Each of them plays REALLY different, and compared to that I didn't feel the classes in GW2 felt distinct enough. Or interesting enough in the long run, partially, because with level 10 you have almost all skills you EVER get. There is no evolution anymore, no cool new attacks or skills to look forward to which make a gamechanging experience. When I learned to transform into a Seal as Druid with level whatever, it was a whole new experience because I could not safely travel rivers, passing by mobs. Just as a tiny sniplet. That is what I expect in class/level advance: real changing skills. Here I miss that. My level 20 Ranger knows the same than any level 70 Ranger, maybe he gets another trap, which really is just a miniature addition. You simply learn nothing really new anymore. And as I said, nothing distincts the combat enough for my taste. The enemy is always toe to toe with you in no time, you always circle, evade and run around the enemy and there is no really different way. As I said, compare it to how vastly individual each class fights in WOW. Sorry if that WOW comparision pisses some people off.

I simply want many abilites. It's what bored me quick of DCUO as well, having those 5-6 abilities only, and it's what I am very weary about hearing from Elder Scrolls Online. I simply love to have many abilities at hand, because I think it makes a more interesting combat than being narrowed down to a few.

Hey, if GW2 is a roaring financial success for Anet, that's good for them. They are passionate good people. Nice for them. And if you have a blast, that's fine. I am not passionate about GW2 as I was with other games. It's objective fail or success bother me not at all.

A forum is a place where people can discuss about different opinions. So what I don't get is, how people react offended when they come to a forum and then find... well different opinions. If a different opinion offends you, what are you even doing here?

What is up with reviews and impressions being in General Discussion as of late? Though to be fair it happens with every MMO on their forums.

By the way Elikal, it's cool that it failedfor [you] and a few others.

Sorry for late edit.

Peace out.

I might get banned for this. - Rizel Star.

P2P LOGIC = If it's P2P it means longevity, overall better game, and THE BEST SUPPORT EVER!!!!!(Which has been rinsed and repeated about a thousand times)

Common Sense Logic = P2P logic is no better than F2P Logic.

you not the only one OP. Though this site is GW2 pro. Ppl are blind and they think the fact that its a free of sub based mmo (if you can even call it a mmo) it makes up for all the black bagging of accts and poor lack of support this game has. I for one pray every night b 4 i go to bed that this company hits a hardship soon and goes under...

My old guild from DayZ (consist of 24 ppl) were all pumped up and hyped for GW2 saying its the best game ever created since running water! Now only 2-3 of them play it, the rest say its boring. DURRRR Glad i didnt spend my hard earnd cash on this joke...rather spend it on the new Family Guy game
