“If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.”- Henry Ford

OP  11/21/12 10:53:14 PM#1

I decided this evening to revist Arch Lord (as they won't stop sending me emails about their 'big fixes' to a plethra of 'issues' the game has. I figured i would take a look).

This only so far has served to remind me of a major turnoff for me when it comes to trying an MMO. First i had to dowload some basic runtime environment for all their games, then dowload the doawnloader, in order to download the installer...then have to extract it and figure out which file is actually the installer. And once the game is finally installed...it spends 3 hours updating itself with dowloads that it is afterwards installing.....

Some sites have it really together on this note. A few clicks and your done and ready to play (even if their is a bit of a wait on some of it). Others are intensly process of preperation to play heavy. Especially when it comes to actually getting the game, and registering. Like making a parent company account, specific game account (thankfully these days this is more often then not one in the same) then a player account... and don't forget your forum account. If your lucky they will let you use the same name for all of these and maybe even password... often you won't be that lucky.

The suck icing on the fail cake is usually that the game's site has a limited or non-existant player guide for ages 9it's like the last thing they get around to doing when it probably, in my opinion should have been done before launch).

So a set of questions to you all:

- What do you find to be a most agrrevating feature (or lack their of) prevailent on MMO's websites?

- What is your prescription for making a better MMO website?

I am surprised that Darkfall, especially being so close to release date of Unholy Wars, does not blatantly state such information on their website. Upon clicking a link to go your regions website, at the bottom, left, in small text you can see news updates about it. It seems to me that this should be a bit more blatant.

On other sites your download scenario turns up as well. Its quite aggrivating to spend time downloading a downloader, then having it download, then install, only to download more and install that as well. Plus, some sites don't make it the easiest to even get your download going!

One of the things I always disliked the most is when games have 14 day free trials, but you can't download until after you have created your account. Then you find out the download is going to take hours and its best just to wait till the next day. Thus, losing a day!

I got to admit, WoW did it right. Same with EQ2. Either of those games I can be playing within an hour or less of signup or purchase. Plus all the information to learn how to play is easy to access. Not that you really need the info for those 2 games, but at least they are there!

You want the real skinny on what websites should be?

They should be extensions of the game, ways to access the game without being there. They should be a selling point and a witness to the great things inside if you only "join the crew".

Unless your game is browser based many people are going to need to be on a computer where the program is installed to use it.

Oh the things I would offer - branstorming GO ...

  • chat while offline with irc channels
  • auction participation while offline
  • blog and video sections
  • guild tools for calendars and shoutbox type short notes
  • population density maps showing where players are located with colored pings or resembling heat maps
  • other things i can't talk about because my game will have them and i'm not giving out the info

The game website needs to be a place that simulates the population existing in a game. It needs to look like real-time reporting. When a new person comes, they would see lively interaction. When an existing person comes, they would be able to interact. Sharing the resources between both the game and the web server gives more reasons to label it all a hobby.

LOVE IT! Great ideas. Though I will never play BF3 again after they told me that my original full price purchase only gave me a second class customer position, I like the way their website ties into the game. Stats, chat, information, forums and you launch from the site too. I know some people didn't care for it but I liked it a lot. I feel battlelog is a step in the right direction, but could be taken further.

It sounds like your complaint is about hassles of registering, downloading, and installing a game, and not of game web sites more broadly.  Is that correct?

For me, the biggest annoyance with game web sites is when there is hardly any information on the game itself.  If I click on an ad for a game, I want to know about the game to see if it might be any good.  If all the site does is asks me to register a username and password and won't tell me anything about the game, it makes me wonder if it's a phishing site rather than an actual game.

Yeah, downloading MMOs can be painful at times.

A simple page where you download the client, register and a few pages is good enough, the hints and guides should be in the game instead (and easy to disable).

They also really should offer 3 types of downloads, the downloader that patches everything, a full install and a torrent of the full install. It is not so hard to make and the torrent is actually saving them bandwidth.

Basic guides do not belong on official websites, they belong in the game. Advanced guides belong on wikis and similar sites. A forum linked to the official pages is nice though.

Easy is the keyword here. Fast is nice too.

I disagree very, very strongly with that.  I'll often dismiss a game out of hand entirely if it takes that approach.

Sometimes it only takes a few minutes to looking through a game's web site to determine that it's not for me--or to determine that it's potentially interesting and worth a further look.  Paying $50 to buy a box, then several hours to download the game, then many more hours to play through the basic walkthrough, only to find something that I consider completely game-breaking and would have spotted within 10 minutes if the game had a decent web site is an extremely inefficient way to pick out potentially interesting games.

The answer is facebook.

Imagine the world as we are born, we login to facebook and twitter. Replacing SSN, State Drivers LIcence, and Passport with Facebook.

Everything in the world under Facebook. The sign of the beast, and one ring to rule them all.

In the U.S. when we get pulled over by the police and roll down the car window. The next thing we hear is licence and car registration. What if the cop said, “Facebook or Twitter ID?”

Bank, vote, pay bills, apply to college, apply for a job, see a doctor, pay Taxes, jury duty, make a call, play a game, every transaction linked to a single ID.

Pardon any spelling errors
Konfess your cyns and some maybe forgiven
Boy: Why can't I talk to Him?
Mom: We don't talk to Priests.

@Greenreen, Love those ideas. But what did you mean by other stuff that will be in your game...you building something? or talking about your MMO of choice and some features it will be getting?

In General I am glad to see I am not the only one seeing this, and not the only one sort of floored by it. Not-so-intelligent design on websites is one of those first big things that tips me off that an MMO may not be so great. And, i have noticed, when the website is horrible, so too, tends to be the game. Thing is if a developer can't get a website right, they probably don't have any business doing somethign 10x more complicated.

If an upcomming MMO wants to impress me they can show me a wonderfully designed site with active forums (not leaving their past betas and upcoming teaser for debate and intrigue on fansites), long before the link to dowload ever become active. Before a game even releases it would be great to see a full wikia (with maybe some restrictions placed on it so as not to give too much away before the game comes out)...But a 30 second teaser on youtube no longer strikes me as interesting...especially when that's all it is, with nothing in the links, or maybe a link to what is just a splash page... very annoying really.

I know it's a double post but felt this was worth adressing seperately and it's my thread so neaners

I did mention about wikia's and lack of information...also having to have different user names often time between the web site and the forums and sometimes even the game...fact is the primary thing to complain about with the websites is getting the game, and getting access to it in my view. The website is typically our portal into the game and our first point of access, so while these I find to be pervasive failings on many sites part...all aspects of design on a site have importance (another thing is a wanted to leave something for others to talk about, lol).

And, Quizzical, what you had said about seing the splash page that wants you to sign up without telling you anything... yeah that is increadibly annoying as well...I do find though, and sometimes you have to be looking really hard for it, that they have the tiniest link somewhere on the page that takes you to the full site. this isn't always the case but it is most the time... often the color of the text almost matches the background or it is listed along side things like the little policy and EULA links at the bottom in fine print.

...snip

Yeah that was a comment about a hobby game that I am working on.

Since I'm reposting I'll talk about one super secret thing that won't be super secret now lol This one I don't think people are going to see the beauty of unless they pvp so in every game it wouldn't make sense so stealing it probably isn't going to happen.

You know how ppl always complain about pvp skills, x is overpowered, y is underpowered. I've made a forum system that plays judge and jury on skills with randomly chosen players who volunteer to participate taking defendant and prosecutor roles with a judge angle upward view with a huge gavel as the headline that people can click into. Think... pink floyd's the wall as inspiration ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZE2t6HWmquc ).  Having a peer review of things in the open field for all to see I think will be extremely exciting to participate in offline because the outcome will affect the game. The outcome that the players decide then becomes what does or does not get changed. When someone gets a real "say" in the game by participating on giving feedback and can wave around that they won, it's about who can be the best or most entertaining during their debate to bring in the personalities on the forum. What pvp player doesn't want to pvp on the forum too and it is possible lol
