6th year going, still haven't even tested everything, or perfected more than two of the paths I've tested.

This game is about you deciding what to become, and it will always reward you for sticking with your decission. No other game has yet rewarded me for sticking to my decission so that it has changed my approach to real life, and sticking to decissions in there too.

If there was a path to choose, I couldn't find it within 2 weeks.  Did missions, got a 5 million ship, got bored in high sec.  Went to low sec, got ganked by a very powerful ship.  Full EVE experience from the perspective of most people who don't wish to invest a lot of time mining and just want to fly a ship and have some fun I'd imagine.

Why are people playing?  Don't know, don't care.  I notice the concurrency goes down during US primetime, and it's common to multibox in this game, those two things tell me all I really need to know.  There's also a lot of mining bots.

And that's the beauty of EVE. It filters out the solo players and the instant gratification crowd. Sorry you didn't like it, there's GW2, WoW, and Rift for you... EVE is all about playing with others. You need to join a corp to fully experience the game (or at least one tiny aspect of the game, depending on what type of corp it is). You do NOT need to invest any time mining to make enough ISK for pvp. I do missions, salvaging, and station trading to earn my billions. Even with the multiboxers, I am willing to bet EVE still has more individual concurrent players on any given day than even the newest of themepark games. Themeparks have a lot of concurrent users during their first week, before everyone figures out how boring and pointless the game is.

I did a 2 week trial a few years ago. Seemed bland to me.. Ohh and I am a group oriented player.

If you actually think EVE has more concurrent players online than GW2 or WoW then I have no idea what world you live in.

WoW is ,well  , WoW , and GW2 has tons of EU and NA servers that still sit at full often during prime time.

EVE is good for what it is , but trying to say it has more online concurrent players than any other mmorpg is just ridiculous.

It probably has more players on one server though.

This is what I've heard and keeps me from giving this a try. Hopefully I've heard wrong as I'd like to try a game with more freedom. Are these people exaggerating PvE boredom. Would someone be able to have fun in this game solo?

uh...well...there's certainly serious pve going on in places like anomalities and wormholes. so much so that I stay clear of wormhole pve :). bad experiences.

being completely honest, pve in eve is not very different from pve in any standard MMO, except there aren't virtually any bosses. so it's more like fighting trash mobs if you will. it's a means to acquire wealth and crafting materials, there is no super-epic raiding going on - despite there being very challenging escalation and incursion pve events.

Can you have fun solo ? well...you have to tell us what's fun for you. most of eve's appeal comes from "doing things for a higher purpose". Personally i don't know how to have fun solo in ANY mmo so I can't answer that question. I know when I started playing I skipped everything quest-related including tutorials because i wanted to get out there and mine.

soon i wanted a reason to mine so I started looking at crafting...then naturally at mining and industrial corporations...and then i ended up in nullsec. while most of the time i spend alone, I am living in a space inhabited by my alliance, and fly with them in pvp and so on. So even if i'm part of an alliance i spend maybe 90% of my time by myslf (By choice).

does that count as solo? :D

you asked one of those questions that ishard to put into words. it's not easy to relate to another MMO or anything like that. as part of an alliance you can spend minimal time with a group, or nearly all the time with a group, that choice is yours. some players play virtually solo the whole time. I am not a pvp'er so I'm one of them.

It appears that I would have to try this game myself to see if I would find it fun as most of the people that have played it contradict each other.  I don't quite understand how you can be viable quickly but still be motivated to play and have nearly infinite character progression.  This game is great for casuals and hardcores?  With full loot how would that promote hardcores that build up stuff over a long period of time?  Other full loot games seem to have easy to obtain stuff/gear so you don't really care too much if you lose it.

To the poster above thanks for the info.  It does appear that there isn't much PvE solo challenge but it's still worth it for the freedom.

viable quickly...

1) pick up the first quest frigate.

2) equip a microwarpdrive and a warp disruptor.

you're now viable in a fleet, in the role of 'fast tackler'.

of course inevitably you'll warp-disrupt the stargate, shoot at your own allies, fly your ship the opposite direction than the enemy and much more but...that all comes with practice.

really you can be viable in a matter of hours. some critical roles like fast tackling require virtually zero skill training.

being viable isn't the problem. finding the right people to play with is a newbie's biggest obstacle. training corps can help here, but of course a newbie wouldn't know to look for one.

Yes, definitely try it for yourself. Get yourself a 21-day free trial (PM me for one or look in the buddy offer thread).

People contradict each other about EVE for several reasons. First is that there's just so damb much of it. Imagine someone who visited New York for a weekend arguing with someone who'd lived in Montana all their life about "what America is like". Second, people bring very different perspectives to EVE - one guy sees freedom, another guy sees like of direction. One guy sees crappy PvE content, another is indifferent to the resource gathering mechanisms as long as they work.

You can be viable quickly because EVE is all about roles.  Some roles you can train into very quickly, others take a very considerable amount of time. But the quick-and-easy-to-train roles don't become obselete. Even fleets full of high-skill point players will still want tacklers, scouts, probers and so on (in fact they're often desperately short of people willing to fill these roles).

EVE is full loot, but the standard PvP equipment is readily obtainable and is manufactured by players, so you won't be at too deep a disadvantage, especially after the first 3 months or so. Once you can use T2 modules, you'll be using the same equipment on your ship that a 2003 vet flying the same ship does. This is because having 150,000,000 SP doesn't in and of itself give you any advantages. The 2003 guy will only have a few percent more EHP and damage than a 2011 guy.

That's changing a bit in Retribution (4 Dec 2012). The NPCs are going to be slightly smarter and work together more.

Here's a bit of info on that: Brains! - Nom Nom!

The fact that every MMO, or MMORPG launched since like the year of 2005 on has been a complete FAILURE because of the FREE 2 Play thing, and really its not FREE 2 Play.

Its Free 2 Play it how it is.

Spend Hundreds of Dollars to Enjoy.

The only MMO's that are currently not like this is GuildWars 2, and DarkFall the only decen't MMO's besides even still around.

Nexon, Perfect World, Aeria Games, Suba Games, Gamers First, All Failures in the MMO industry. I used to be paying customers from many of these companies until they got greedy, and I mean spending more than the average subscription price with Nexon for example when Combat arms wasn't Pay 2 Enjoy with specialists and such.

I am sure there are others, but these are the reason MMO Genere is dieing is GREED.

Gamers First, For example I wish I had millions if not billions of dollars in RL I would totally buy out APB which they failed at, and relaunch the game again with good developers, and who knows with that type of money maybe I would just start a new game with a new game engine and better design things APB didn't have. Problem is Gamers First, Ruins every MMO they touch.

SWTOR, for example was a failure they could have done much better game design, I played beta, saw the bugs, the content it lacked didn't even buy the game after that.

If a MMORPG can't offer me a free demo, show me more than a cinematic video, and show me decent actual in game snapshots chances are the game is a failure.

This is why I tend to stay away from these so called FREE 2 Play titles and if I play I don't put in a lot of cash at all because of what the companies reputations are known for.

Oh and this is what makes EVE so great, and the reason I still actually have a subscription to EVE.

Ah, now I get your other post. Ok, it's obvious you don't like EVE and that's fine. No game is for everyone, however to call a subscription MMO with 400k subs a failure is rather odd, no? Or any number, for that matter, when one has no info on the size of the target audience or the cost to run the game. That said, I won't bother you with any more of my EVE 'hype'. :)

Because it was the only game where you could actually punish the llamas, whiners, tourette kids and cheaters.

Sitting in a random system waiting for 6h (!) for someone to log back on after they tried to save themselves by logging out..may not sound to epic, but the feeling of their ":(" in local afterwards, was.

I had to...let's call it "get rid of my character" to finally stop playing. I tried going back a few times but the thought of my main just sitting there outside my grasp made me look at my new made toon and realise things will never be the same.

But yeah, I never really liked space games and only started EVE because I had never tried an mmo before it and a friend was playing. But the game did everything so good that it made me stay. And this was way before T2 was even in game and thankfully, before megajumping all over the place was implemented.

Oh yeah, much love to FIXers, Battle Angels and 0utbreakers! ;)

Eve's not a space sim.

Sure it has 4X trading elements but a true space sim is something like X3 Albion Prelude or to a lesser extent Free Space.

Eve is a mish mash much like other MMOs. It pulls from a few sub-genres but its anything but a pure sim.

[mod edit]

i played eve for some time, it's not too bad, i am just not the simulation guy. i like it direct.

anyway "what keeps those people playing" is the question, 400k people are a niche game. no?

uh and i just went the people's way. as long a game doesnt have at least a million subscribers, it'S concidered a failure  in this forum.

just not eve.

but thx for not bothering me again :)

The only luck I had today was to have you as my opponent.

it's hard being a 'failure' when your goal isn't to be that big.

contnuous growth over nearly a decade is ... unprecedented in this industry. We're not sure New Eden could even handle 1 million players.

Farmville has a lot of players too. Some things are there just to defy.
