You frustrate a player with a whole giant array of limitations they'll just uninstall.  They certainly aren't going to subscribe if they haven't already.  That seems to be the idea here though.  Frustrate the player and limit them every which way they turn to such an extent they'll just subscribe.  No, they won't.  They'll just not play.

Pirates of the Burning Sea did it right.  They restricted only a couple of things.  Ship storage, and crafting.  That was it.  I had so much fun playing for free I subscribed for a bit, to get those minor things unlocked.  That's how you attract players to paying.

Not to mention aren't they going to have a cash shop?  If they don't already.  Well they can forget about free players buying anything from that, due to being so immensly frustrated during just the first few hours of the game.  They've made their F2P option entirely worthless, even to themselves regarding profit.  The very fact they needed feedback telling them restricting F2P players to one action bar shows these people have absolutely no idea what they are doing.  That in itself is an absolute no brainer.

I was looking forward to trying Swtor again and just messing around with a friend of mine in the game once it hit F2P.  No way am I touching it now.  Its not even worth the download, free or not, and having played it, its certainly not worth a sub fee, in this universe, or even one far far away.

when F2P was announced I figured you would get access to 1-50 story content with limited flashpoints/warzones a week and no operations and maybe some restrictions on races or companions but why such limits core functions of the game? or even ridiculous things like the color match or hide helmet or the loot rolls.. i just can't understand who sat down and thought this was a good idea... all i can think is they know their bread and butter is the story aspect so if they just gave that away not many would subscribe at all... but this many restrictions i'm afraid is probably not going to end up well for them...

I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. If I buy a candy bar at a store, oftentimes, I will drop it... so that it achieves its maximum flavor potential. --Mitch Hedberg

Subscribers getting additional 2 bars (total 6) and F2P can purchase additional bars (they are going to get 2 bars).

i really don't see how you could play a good number of the classes with this restriction at the higher levels.. you are pretty much forced into buying more quickslot bars.. not that they are expensive.. but still why even make this a restriction?

It still doesn't make it a good idea to limit something like hotbar, expecially in a game like SWTOR that has tons of skills.

Bioware or EA should be able to find different ways to make money instead of monetizing something so integral to playing the game.

Limiting hotbars has to be the worst F2P limitation I have ever heard of and it has already made a lot of people who might of been interested in SWTOR after the conversion decide it will not even be worth the bandwidth required for the download. They have no grasp at all when it comes to thier customers or gamers in general.

I want to be Uncle Owen again.

If it was as you thought it might have been, then yea, I see little problem with that.  I'd mess around with that.

However what they're intending to do here would be laughable, yet its so bad, its literally not even funny.  It's just the height of stupidity.   There may have been worse, but this is by far the most restrictions (and the most ridiculous) I've ever seen on a F2P model.

With these levels of restriction, there's no point in even trying F2P.   There's no point in even logging in to do so.  There's no point to any of it.   They're just wasting money having devs impliment this stuff into the game.  Just scrap the whole F2P concept if you can't do better than that.

The only thing I can say is I have to give them props on one thing.  It took quite the active imagination to even dream up such restrictions.  I mean, that's actually brainstorming right there.  I won't say its impressive, but it sure is imaginative.  For all the wrong reasons of course.

I do not need f2p, will always play only on sub mode. Like with any game that have mixed option.

Yep, active imagination indeed :) we tried to jump their bar yesterday, but it's not possible... in a game where you fill your quickbars at level cap, removing bars is so stupid, it's almost comical. (and we tried really hard to beat them, there were ideas like: "limit the mouse so f2p's couldn't use the right mouse button", or "random gear equip, and f2p's are unable to open the character screen for swapping the gears" :D )

As I said earlier, most of the restrictions are ok, and some of them are a bit harsh. But those could still make a viable f2p setting for some people. Only this bar restriction is hitting some brown material into the fan...

I'm pretty sure they're following Funcom's footsteps and don't even care the fp2 system. They only want to milk their current subscribers a bit more, so they're adding the cash shop - and they start the f2p only to justify it. TOR already has an unlimited trial option (to lvl15 without any restriction, AoC had the same), so anyone who's interested in TOR can use it to play and then subscribe or not. Now EA switching it to a far more restrictive model ("opening up to lvl50"), and they make sure that nobody will play it. But hey, for the subscribers there will be a nice shop with cosmetics and other fluff.

Make them pay 25 cents per flashpoint!! Like a video game at the arcade. ( You can still play those for a quarter right? )

Honestly one of the many things that makes this site such a bad joke is it's not even possible to have a reasonable discussion on many games. Just mentioning ToR (or WoW) around here is the equivelant of tossing blood into a shark tank. No thought, no debate, no logic needed, just blind attack.

At this point it doesn't matter what Bioware does, people here would bitch about it.

My thoughts exactly.

I think a lot of people are missing that several of the restrictions are to prevent gold spammers from taking advantage of what they are offering.  I made a free trial in EVE this week to test it out, they have a lot of similar restrictions on what a free trial can do to prevent taking advantage of what is being offered.  For example, I can't post any contracts for sale at all, at least ToR has the option to even sell stuff on the GTN.

Only this time people are right!  This whole Freemium F2P model is a joke!

I am honestly at a loss here as to what EA/Bioware tries to achieve here?

Happy players will buy stuff from your store and might even think about subbing!

Frustrating players will quit and uninstall your game! without spending a dime!

It's really simple as that!

And with all these ridiculous restrictions they are going to frustrate every single new player trying out the game! Every single one of them.

I am seriously thinking EA is just trying to purposely tank this game as fast as possible, so they can shut it down and end the IP License agreement with Lucas Arts and so cut their losses.

This would be absolutely no suprise to me, seeing how EA operates. It would perfectly fit their way of thinking.

For EA top management this game has already failed and didn't meet their financial expectations.

Hmmm. Since it would cost me nothing, and I'd have a "Preferred Status", it might be worth my time to finish out the story lines I did not finish.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

The fact that they even considered this in the first place is unbelievably asinine, shallow, and petty.

Whoever they hired to be their monetization clown is really kind of screwing the pooch.

Perhaps they should consider restricting use of the escape key, windowed mode, and the top few screen resolutions a player's video card will support to subscribers as well.

Hell, they should even limit the number of times you can run the executable each week!

wow now free to play players have 5 warzones instead of 3 and 2 quickbars what a great improvement i think they will never realise how to make a successful free to play game.

If they had the mind they could simply follow lols model

They could also give unlimited access to warzones with less pvp xp for free to play players but i think this is very hard for them to think.
