heavily phased, instanced and with an emphasis on "story". it's dead already. swtor model, through and through. and yes, the initial sales will be impressive but not as much as swtor's. imo even the general public is becoming aware that "ip does not the game make" - it is the game design, the way the mechanics are built, the "what this game is all about" rather than referencing some imagined world... tell me, did you love ES games for their "story" or for the fact that they gave you a freedom to explore and a real sense of accomplishment? I still remember eeking out a living in Morrowind... People confuse these things. People didn't love Star Wars because of its setting.. they loved it because of its characters, excellent writing and revolutionary special effects for the time. If you remove these, the story is banal and pretty much standard as is the space-opera setting, it's been done and done already ever since the 1940s... - the movie would have flopped like everybody expected to. The setting became beloved by so many because the movie itself, the stuff I mentioned, carried it through. Fast forward 15 years... bland characters, soapy writing and meh special effects (being impressed by CGI today is like being impressed by steam engines in the 20th century...) It's just an attempt at exploiting customer sentimentality. When you strip off the SW/ES sheen, there is nothing behind. Nothing.

Originally posted by PsychoPigeon Were you not paying attention in the run up for TOR? Same exact thing: multiple overly positive previews/first looks/exclusive videos etc.etc. every week. This site and others like it that hyped that game to the sky and it was mediocre at best. And magically, they saw none of what made 80% of the playerbase quit in the first 6 months. It is clear that the entire gaming press has lost any vestiges of objectivity it ever had, to the pockets of advertisers/game companies. If anything, the hype title-wave makes it more likely TESO will be a bad game than the reverse, because you don't have to try nearly so hard to sell a good game (especially one with name recognition). So, the hype machine is cranking up for TESO? So bloody what....

Already got the MMORPG for me Zenimax so far has made things sound better compared to previous information earlier this year. Depending on payment model, combat, questing, and PVP, my intrest in it will increase/decrease, then I will try beta, and if I like it I'll buy it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ns-IIn-DG-c Try to argue this please. Oh also if you quote me and it's to argue my point, if I don't respond it means I haven't been corrected by you and/or I haven't seen it. Remember I don't mind admitting I am in the wrong. Take care :D |

and it'll be the wowkiller and it'll have EVERYTHING at launch and it'll take your trash out for you and it'll make people be your friend so you're not lonely anymore and it won't suck and cause devs to delete posts pointing that out on the official forums and nobody will get banned from this site for "infractions" when the flame wars inevitably hit /sarcasam off |

More importantly, how the hell will multiple sharding on a mega server work with the siege.
Loosing on your shard, no problem switch to a shard where you're winning. Loosing on all shards, no problem switch to your alt in another alliance and enjoy the farm. |

Like a lot of poeple already said, TOR has given the community reason to take any review with a grain of salt. I would include GW2 in that as well. The reviewers work for companies that need revenue from gaming companies, so this comes as no surprise that every MMO preview is positive. Also, reviewers typically only play for a couple of hours, if even that. MMOs are about longevity so the reviewers would have a distorted view even if they were being completely objective.

Oh good, I'm glad people are finding the next mmo to hype so we can start the hype/disappointment cycle again. Seriously, does it stop?

Originally posted by PsychoPigeon The second part of my post might still apply though. I'm pretty sure TOR had very positive player previews too, but they didn't address the longevity question. After a few hours of SWTOR I also thought it could be one of the best MMOs ever, but I had not got to end game yet nor did I forsee Bioware's game breaking bugs, exploits, and head-scratching nerfs. Its already well known that media outlets are liars, yes even the correspondants at MMORPG. You think they would write a negative review on anygame they were given the privledge to come in and preview?
THe answer is no, not unless they never wanted to be invited back.
I take all these previews and articles for a grain of salt, show me a video, lable it as being only alpha and ill see if i buy what your selling for myself. Save your written previews. As soon as they mentioned megaservers would have instanced zones and phasing, it pretty much killed any chance I would enjoy this game. A TES game should have at least SOME degree of persistence. Instancing and phasing are the easy (and cheap) ways out. Enter a whole new realm of challenge and adventure. |

What game? Isn't this just a themepark game in alpha or pre-alpha development?

Try something: Find me a bad preview from a major games outled for any AAA MMO in the past 7 years. I dare you. I double dare you----- Even Tabula Rasa and APB got favorable previews. |
