Loved AC pvp, Shadowbane was the shit.  I heard about DT a little late and got in when it was pretty much a waste land.  Played on and off for about a week and the only thing I saw was the occasional gank squad.  Is there a lot of interest in this game?  How invovled are the devs?

There is plenty of interest in the game as the people who played at the start seem to all be coming back and we are getting a lot of new people as well as those who tried but didn't get past the initial bugs of launch. If you like the danger of a PvP game then you should definitely give Darkfall a serious try. If you like it you will probably love it. :D

Its one of the only MMOs in the last 8 years to be growing and successful, so I'd say there's interest!

The devs you'll have to get used to though. They don't talk much and their ETAs are always off. But they eventually deliver.

I also remember there not being a NA server for a while after the offical launch of DF1, and that a lot of NA players were playing on EU servers.  Is there word yet about release info like this?

All it takes for evil to succeed is for the good to stand by and do nothing

Am in kind of the same boat.  I haven't seen a lot of actual information about unholy wars yet.  So far all i really know is that the graphics and ui have been updated and that they've changed the skill system.  Can't say i've ever seen anyone say the quit because of the graphics or the ui and wether or not they've addressed the complaints with the skills in darkfall(lack of any cap) I think remains to be seen.

I think it's a wait and see game to find out if this one will end the same as the prvious version.

They have actively tried to address the grind issue and have said that they will be actively looking for exploiters. In my eyes these two issues is what killed df after a few months.

I was interested in the original DF but didn't bite right away. Then I read about all the cheaters grinding skills and crap automatically and I lost most interest. I ended up trying the free trial they did and was put off by the UI.

I am looking forward to UW and plan on trying it, but if there are people often cheating in the new one, I probably won't bother staying long. :(

The grind thing seems to a problem with pvp sandboxes in general, its the same with eve and perpetuum.

I think all 3 games could benefit from faster skilling for new players (well not so much dfuw as its a new game). E.g. so you get to a stage where you are competative at one specialisation after 4 to 6 weeks, then it slows down for when you enter the diversity phase.

People didn't quit because of the graphics but a lot of people just didn't give the game a shot because of the graphics. They've completely overhauled the skill system and there are not caps on skills but there are caps on the number of skills you can have 'active' at a time due to the role/school system.

The game is definitely different from what it was before, and the short video of the Baresark shows that quite clearly. Most people on EU1 quit because the grind was far and away the worst of any game at the time and the number of bugs were ridiculous. Obviously this has all been fixed now and skilling is relatively quick in Darkfall now, however stat game remains fairly slow(good thing).

As someone said above the game is all about PvP risk. If you enjoy PvP, Clan vs. Clan, territorial combat, naval combat, PvP Raiding, exploring/crafting/farming, and most importantly first person style games then I strongly suggest it. It's unlike anything else out there when it comes to 'epic' battles and the fact that it's open and full loot PvP adds a dimension to the game that not many have had in the past.

My suggestion if you're new to Darkfall is to find yourself a clan that plans on securing a holding(city/hamlet) and hop into that clan. Get out of the starting cities and find a clan that is willing to help you learn the PvP, PvE, and crafting systems. You'll love the game.

Hmm ?

If you're into big scale PVP then then launch of DFUW is where you'll want to be, a ton of players returning and it should attract some new ones as well. The changes to combat and some more casual systems should enable the game to survive a lot longer than the first one beyond it's launch.. there's improved UI, improved graphics. I would assume unless Aventurine is lying about absolutely everything there's more to come back for with DFUW.

Awaiting - Darkfall: Unholy Wars
Currently playing - War Z, Rift
Previous games - SWG, World of Warcraft, ShadowBane, Warhammer, Age of Conan, Darkfall, Planetside Asheron's Call, Everquest, Everquest 2, Too many.

They opened an NA server a couple months after launch.

Not that I want to bash the game, but DF never grew nor was successful. About the devs, I guess you're kind of right, but I wouldn't bet any cash on them to deliver. Just look at how much time they took to make DF, 8 years, and the game wasn't even in a good shape. Now they want to release a new version of their old game with a small amount of time between the annoncement of the new game and the release, with next to no infos or gameplay videos to show us the changes. I mean, I can't have faith in them to deliver or even deliver something that will fix most of the issues the game had. But I do hope it wil happen. I would really like to play this game. I really like the concept but too many things turned me down on the original. I didn't play very long tho. If they can get rid of that stupid macro style combat, that will be a good step foward. I hate macros with a passion.

Since I didn't play the original DF for long, I have a question about the gear, I was wondering how do you obtain some good gear to be competitive in PvP? Is it hard to get it back if you die and someone loot all your gear? I mean I'm not really a fan of OWPvP, I love it when there's some good fights between groups of players and I hate it with a passion when you want to PvE/grind solo. I don't care that someone tries to gank me while I'm grinding, the problem is that in most MMO's, you can't even try to beat the guy who ganked you since you have no chances of beating someone higher in levels and gear. I hope it's not like that in DFUW. As long as the PvP doesn't come down to who played the most, have the best gear and that the good gear can be fairly easy to obtain, I will try it.

I wouldn't worry about gear. As much as you lose in pvp, you'll gain in pvp.

I'm a unique and beautiful snowflake.

I couldn't stomach reading beyond that.

Let me help you out with a few corrections.

First, Darkfall DID grow. It's one of the few MMOs to open a new server POST release. The dev team went from 20 members to, currently sitting at about 55-60. They've moved into a new office building.

Darkfall took about 5 years to develop, from summer 2003 to Q1 2009 (with beta starting in September 08).

The game was in better shape than most other MMOs of the last 8 years, I could actually play it on day 2, unlike AoC, or WAR.

And why wouldn't you bet cash on them to deliver? Every single feature they promised for the last 3 expansions they promised turned out to be in said expansion.

So explain to me, how this is all possible, if the game wasn't successful? Failed games tend to SHRINK their staff, not grow it. They certainly don't produce entire game sequels while not making money.

Speaking of gear, what is it like in DF?  I couldn't imagine there being BoP or BoE garbage in the game.  But are there unique weapons?  Is it difficult to afford high-end weapons?  Are there even high-end weapons?

No BOP or BoE. Gear is generally easy to get. There are some rarer and more powerful weapons that you can get from mobs, buy from players, or make yourself. Generally during sieges people will bring their better gear, and the winner of the fights collect it all up from their bodies.

When solo high end weapons are hard, but as part of a clan, not really.

Sweet.  How is seige compared to Shadowbane?  If you never played SB, players could make entire cities with their own vendors selling their own stuff at their own prices.  And even cooler, other guilds could declare war on them and wipe their entire city off the map.

I played DF at launch and siege was pretty fun.  There were player made cities (though you couldn't plan layout and such) that had crafting stations and vendors, and yes another clan could come in and wipe you off the map, though i don't remember as many fun siege weapos as say GW2 has.  But that was soon after launch.  I'll be checking it out and hoping.

Hmm, the population has done nothing but shrink since launch what exactly do you mean by growing?  And what do you mean by successfull, the fact that they have been able to keep the game running on a few thousands subs?  I mean its a remarkble feat but there is nothing successfull about it.
