not a bad idea imho but overall still sort of pointless to me in this regard as I like joining guilds to play/interact with other people not NPCs.

ummm.. you join a npc ranger guild because your a ranger. All rangers (Players) are in this guild by virtue of being a ranger (unless their are multiple ranger guilds). You can do the same for other player interests and voilla you have just made instant communities.

now allow these "rangers" to help build this npc guild, make outposts, and participate in this "faction" and you are on your way to a world.

I've played quite a few for several months or longer without ever joining a guild and enjoyed them very much.  But I do play with a spouse which probably changes my perspective.  I enjoy games with guilds but sometimes I enjoy more solitude with just us and random encounters with other players out in the world.

For me some of it depends on how social the game is.  In a game like SWG with it's cantinas, player towns, and med centers, I was very content not being in a guild as I had plenty of interactions, and did play for quite a long time.  If there's nothing to do outside of combat, then I've been more likely to be in a guild but less likely to play the game for any length of time.

I haven't felt the need to join a guild in GW2 yet. I can just wander around and join in with everybody else.

Everyone seems friendly and helps each other out, risking their own life to res you in sticky situations, even thugh you may be a stranger.

I will join a guild at some point but for now I'm just doing my own thing at my own pace.

Oneof the problems with MMORPGs is how the playerbase has changed over the years, and now in the dungeon finder era its more every man for himself than ever.  People will vote kick a healer or tank after one wipe, when it probaby wasnt even their fault to begin with.  People are impatient with new people and unwilling to hep them learn.

I had an issue in Rift where I needed a quest update that was after a boss fight, behind ONE pack of mobs.  The tank refused to pull them saying 'we will do after'.  Of course the tank dropped group te second it was over so he could queue for his next one.

The problem is people in PuGs have high tendency to be miserable or anti-social people that are only concerned with getting a dungeon done as fast as humanly possible and to hell with anyone else in the group.  If you find the right guild you wont have to deal with people vote kicking for no good reason and calling each other baddies or telling you what spec you should be playing because it will shave 30 seconds off the total time and how you are a noob for not being in it.

which is how I play most games for a few months but really doesn't matter the game in the end without a good guild or core group of friends i just don't stick with games for long.. i dunno to me i just feel taking out this aspect even if just for the social aspect of them really hinders on the mmorpg experience overall.. but obviously everyones mileage will vary on this.

i can agree with this and experienced the same in most all recent games of the last several years and in this case a good guild can really change your perspective of the game.

Well, first of all I play these games for me. As they are "role playign games" I freely allow my character, in my mind, to be a character "in a world". I don't require a guild to do this.

Granted, being in a good guild can be fun but since that is not why I play it doesn't really affect "most" of my enjoyment.

I say "most" because there is content that one can only do in a group and I loathe PUG's. Therefore being in a good guild of good people allows me access to this content.

Also, being in Skyrim or Morrowind is a lot different than being in LOTRO as there is more actual "life" in LOTRO.

I remember using an Oblviion mod that added more people to the streets in the major cities and even on the roads. Though it made the world seem like there were more people, there really was very little life. More like being in a Stepford Wives town.

I enjoy interacting with people in mmo's but don't require them to get value from them.

I hope that clears things up.

little too restrictive for my tastes honestly.. guess if it was more society based and not class wouldn't be a bad idea..

its just an example though. You remember all the factions eq originally had and how cool they were? Imagine if all of these factions were npc guilds in the game that you could theoretically join ( they might have to like you first). You would have access to all these groups in game and you could participate in the ones that you liked best. You might have ones for your class, race, god, tradeskill, city, etc.

the idea is you arent plunged into the world by yourself. If you start with examples of community you might be more likely to take part in them. You could certainly use your clas guild to ask questions about your class.....

all these things just increase the chance that youll talk to someone.

in that way it would be a good system for me not sure about others but I would enjoy it.

people forget how good the faction system was in original eq. It was one of the best features in the game and i think its worthy of being improved.

Because of that EQ faction system - to this day - I still worry about who I am pissing off if I attack anything.  =P

As to the original question, I used to guild up when I joined games.  I cut my teeth in EQ and you pretty much had to be in a guild.  As the years progressed and my real life became more real and less fantasy, my time in games got shorter and shorter.  Eventually I found myself joining guilds and not really participating like I felt guild members should.  I was pretty much a solo player doing my own thing.  Sure I would participate in guild chat or on vent, but because of my time constraints, I was always well behind the rest of the guild in levels.  I felt like a number on the roster more than a contributor.  I stopped joining guilds for the most part and find I have fun in my own way at my own time.  The only thing missing would be raidng I guess, but I do not have the ability to commit to the time it takes to do a raid anyway.

The real draw for guilds isnt so much what they can provide in game - that is a benefit.  The draw to join a guild is the social aspect.  That is what made EQ1 so much fun at the time.  It wasnt for camping the Ragefire spawn for 32 hours that is for damn sure.  But the thrill of seeing your guild come alive at 5am when Ragefire finally did pop...  THAT is what guilds do for people.

If I had that kind of time today, I would be in a guild.  However, I am content and do indeed have fun for long periods of time without joining for the sake of having a cool tag over my head.

If you don't mind, I'd probably rephrase your question to:

'Can a, 'good', guild make you continue playing when otherwise you might be done with a MMO?'

To that I'd definately say yes. I sincerley doubt I would have stayed playing EQ, COH, or WOW, if the guilds if I joined didn't have people I genuinely enjoyed spending time with.  Then again it can backfire, I spent so much time with these people it put my marriage in jeopardy :P

Saying that I only speak to one of those people, semiregularly, now, and there was a ton of drama when I look back at it.  Maybe it's an age thing but I rarely invest myself in guilds now.  There could be many reasons for that, but ultimately I think the social dynamic has changed and you simply don't need others like you used to in an MMO.

This looks like a job for....The Riviera Kid!

but do you play with friends on a regular bases or have a core list of people you have added to your friends list that help you out? or do you constantly wander and never really keep up with any of the same people running PUGs all the time for everything?

There's a couple of RL friends and family that I sometimes hang out with, if we happen to be playing the same MMO.  More often than not, though, I am voice chatting to them as we play our various MMOs or (solo) computer games.  I don't bother with a friends list because I never PUG (too many whiners and cretins).  There isn't an MMO out there where you actually need anyone to help out with quests, so why drag dead weight around with me.

To those that think I am anti-social, I'm far from it - I just find voice-chat with real-life friends and family far more interesting and fluid than typing to total strangers in a chat box whilst crafting/questing/exploring.  Just because I'm in a game with strangers doesn't mean I have any more interest in them than I would with the many hundreds of people in, say, a shopping centre I am walking around in.  Mere proximity does not mean anything.

I have been in several guilds in games that were raid centric yet I almost never did raids. I stayed with them because everytime I was online we had some great talks in guild chat. They also would help me out anytime I couldn't complete certain quests or needed some help in a dungeon as the PUG was getting wiped over and over.. so you don't need to be in a hard core scheduled guild but just a bunch of cool people can really change your view on a game and how enjoyable you find it.

I agree to some degree, I've been in guilds solely because I knew some people who belonged and hanging out in guild chat while out playing was fun.  I probably never engaged in any guild activities, I don't raid, I don't PvP, but so long as there are decent people worth talking to, it was fun.  Of course, I could have done exactly what I ended up doing a lot of times anyhow, just grabbing a friend, finding a quiet place and sitting around talking for a couple of hours.
