I do wish folks would stop trying to use sales/subs/popularity/xfire/etc figures to 'prove' anything.

But you can't wish gamers into giving up their most popular fallacy, I guess, any more than you can Gamblers.

Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.

Not everyone buys an expac in the first week. What is so hard to understand about this? The logic that if the game had 5m western subs it should have sold 5m copies in the first week is wrong. There are a lot of reasons why someone wouldn't buy an xpac right away.

Also last time I checked WoW outsold both GW1 and GW2...................................................

Actually....

It IS disappointing when you compare WoW against, well....WoW.  When the player base is several TIMES what they sold in expansions, that is disheartening.  I think it's very telling, and it's not telling anything good.  Other xpacs sold more than MoP.  This is a downward shift even if small.

I have to ask. What do you expect? every expansion in wow to sell more then the last and it to forever continue to increase? Lets find and name any other 8 year old MMO that has managed to sell over 2 million copies of its expansion on day one? Heck lets go as far as to say lets find a younger MMO that has sold over 2 million copies of its expansion on day one.

This is why WoW should only be compared to WoW.  It's such an anomaly, such an oddity, such a one-of-a-kind happening, that it's just ludicrous to even compare it to other MMOs in anything having to do with numbers or size.

About 30 percent down, if it is 30 percent down, is a bit more than I expected (25%) but it's no real surprise. Still, it remains the 800 pound gorilla out there and that's no surprise either.

No one cares about WoW anymore except for WoW players (and WoW haters I guess).   It will have a large playerbase that puts up with it for a very long time due to addiction and investment, but it's dying and has been since cataclysm (not DUE to cataclysm imo).

And I looked it up, MoP launched in china oct 2nd.  Nice misinfo though, poster above me.

I'm not buying the 10 million subs bit, anymore.. I mean, 2.7 sales of the xpac, to me, means they have about 2.71 million subs.

Not hating on it, still puts it ahead of every other MMO.. but only slightly ahead, which incidentally, seems a lot more realistic, too.

At this point I'm still just amazed that people enjoy WoW to begin with.  I have no reason to be a hater but that game is one of the most boring and ugly MMOs to have ever been created.  I think it's success is directly relevent to how easy they made it.  Casual gamers and children can easily master it and that's the reason for their success.  Good for them though, just wish this wasn't the new golden standard we had to hold all other new MMOs up to.

It's fun making stuff up, huh? Even when actual FACTS are freely available. Still, just so much fun to use your imagination, right?

It's not 10 million subs - it's 10 million players who have payed money in the last 30 days. That's always been the definition - they never hid it - always in plain sight in every press release / quarterly report.

Is this debate still going on? Look the game is old...8 years for mmorpgs is like 8 dog years. We are at the stage of WoW's life where it's more like a city than a hip new club. And in a city the age (levels) are a lot more diverse than a club.

So buying a new expansion is like getting a car now. You don't really buy a car for an 8 year old, I mean you technically could but she won't need it for a long, long time. But my point is the city ain't going nowhere. So what's the rush? Players stop rushing for all things WoW, like years ago...catchup guys.

Wait what? Slightly ahead? Even if WoW had only 2.7m subs it would still be super ultra ahead not slightly. Which MMO is even close to WoW's numbers? Last time I checked the second best MMO had <300k subs :D That's not even a fraction of 2.7m let alone WoW's 5m+ western subs.

so much for the 10 million subs, we can all call that bs now.

Note quite.  I'm pretty sure the entire Asian market doesn't have to pay for expansions, which is one reason absolute sales isn't as important as subscription and game time numbers.

Also, I know quite a few people who are just getting back into the game.  Since you don't actually need the expansion to play the Pandaren race (only to play a monk and 86-90 content), every one of them has decided not to purchase the expansion until they actually need to, assuming they even stick with the game long enough to need to.

Anyway, I have no clue what the current sub numbers are or anything.  Just wanted to say that it's not quite as simple as assuming 2.7 million sales must mean the 10+ million subs number is way off the mark.

And before anyone calls me a fanboi or whatever, I personally don't enjoy the game anymore, and adding kung fu panda and pokemon to the mix didn't help.  I still hold two subs up, because my 8 year old daughter likes to play it with me, but that's it.  And it should probably give people a good idea of what Blizzards target audience is...

so stop saying it has 10 million subs then when it doesn't. it has 10 million unique accounts including mine that has been frozen since 2008.

Blizzard is the one who reports sub numbers, not me.  First, they include Asian accounts in the sub numbers because they are subscribing; just in a different way than everyone else (they don't buy game boxes, and pay for game time in smaller increments rather than monthly).

Secondly, they aren't counting accounts like yours that's been frozen, because you aren't subscribing, so stop being so dramatic.

Just to point out again.....all these games recently (GW2, SWTOR) achieved 2 mill in sales weeks (2 weeks for GW2) or months (1 month for SWTOR) after they launched.....MoP did 2.7 million in 1 week (keep in mind, it hasnet even launched in China)....MoP is now 1 month in...who wants to bet that they sold more than 2.7 million? lol

  • GW2 2Million Western sales dont count because ..."hype" and "GW2s xfire charts", disregard WoWs tanking xfire charts, WoWs heavy ad campagins and tenfold marketing budget!
  • Eastern games dont count because they are Eastern and make WoW numbers look much less impressive
  • Only WoWs Eastern numbers always and ever count and always can be used to compare the games "success" against other new games Western subscriber/sales.  Because Chinese player are humans too! But only if they played WoW. Disregard several ten million Eastern MMORPG player. WoW is bigger than the rest of the market all together you know?
  • Because WoWs global sales become 100% Western so long they don't release in China, disregard half of the worlds markets, inclusive of large MMO markets like Korea and Taiwan where WoW had been released either already, unlike games like GW2.
  • But WoW needs to be granted credit, for it didnt release the sales numbers after WoW was released in China (two days later), disregard Blizzard never released sales including China either way, nor did any other major MMO publisher and theres nothing special about it (in fact the opposite should be the case considering WoW still includes foreign global sales either).
  • When Blizzard claims "majority of losses came from the Eastern regions" it doesnt refer just to the context of the related quarterly reports (just 2 cases until today), but even for every other unrelated report, recent and upcoming and it even overides Blizzard own admission that WoW lost more or only Western player in other recent quarterly reports. Also "most" losses in the East equates to "almost zero losses in the West" forever, disregard the Eastern playerbase was larger than Western since back in 2008 and could hypothetically still lose "more" than the West, even if the West lost all its player.
  • Also you always have to grant WoW much more sales than it announced because since the announcement they could have sold more, disregard the other games also could sold more games since the last anncouncment
  • Also the popular wishful belief WoW has 5 Million "Western" subscriber remains fact until proven wrong! Disregard 5Million where never announced and financial records decline by almost 30% contradicting WoWs Western subcriberbase even grew above 4.5M since 2008. Because there's no evidence that proves this unproven myth wrong! At least none will be accepted.
  • Realistic predictions about declining sales by now proven to be accurate by Blizzards sales report (unlike overly optimistic wishes of WoW fans) are just "desperate spin" by "hater". Disregard the fanbase previous claims about up to 5 Million sales in the first 24hours in the West alone. Disregard slamming the "haters" for accurate proven estimates before. Just spin the topic an claim WoW has announced more global expansion sales than some new EU/US released games announced after launch, therefore they where proven wrong.

Thats the basis and premise of almost every argument you will have with a fanbase in blunt denial and ignorant of plain objective and public available facts and deliberate irrational and dishonest in any argument. You argue  "4  > 3". They answer " bricks =/= round, thus 3 is good" and pretend they just beat you out. Enjoy!

Keep in mind WoW was no smashing hit in the first couple of months either. It grew over time, hence other games should be given the time to unfold their potential aswell. To answer you question, I bet Blizzard sold way more than 2.7 million or at least will, eventually. MoP got a couple of pretty fair reviews from what I've read and is a pretty decent game overall. It may be old, but it is not stagnant, which keeps it alive. As long as Blizzard adds enjoyable content, there will be people playing it.

On topic, the numbers of sales don't prove anything. For the haters who hate WoW for their continued success, will continue to hate it for that. Haters who hate WoW for anything else are not haters, they are trolls. For those who play WoW, they still got enough other players to share content with.

Eight years of every press release clearly and precisely describing what is being counted in the sub account, and still some people think that it includes cancelled accounts.

For the sake of the future of humanity, I'd prefer to believe that nobody could be quite that mind-bogglingly stupid and still have a functioning central nervous system, so instead I will choose to believe that Istavaan is simply trolling.

Their own definitions of what a sub is, states it's true, as well as the quarterly revenues streams that Activision Blizzard periodically announces. They do have about 10 million subs, but about 5-6 million (or maybe more now, no idea) are Chinese subs, for which the defintion of a sub is 'having played at least 1 hr WoW in a month', and 1 million subs included are the annual pass people who got a free D3 if they went for that promotion. Hope this sheds some light on the matter.

you're absolutely right. you see for example i have a sub, but my account will only be active until 11/6 and then it's done i haven

t logged in since D3 came out accept once and that was to take screenies of my toons and say bye to everyone. Before that i was playing two other mmos so basically haven't been on for more then 2 weeks this whole year, even after mines done tho they'll still count it as active im sure.
