I was on the forums weeks before the NGE went live and read a lot of threads and posts from players begging SOE not to go ahead with the patch. SOE didn't listen then so why will they listen now ?

I held the NGE againist SOE & Lucas Arts for many years and wouldn't touch anything with their logo on it with a pole the length of the Kessle run (12 parsecs) until Swtor. I do think SOE is listening now probably due to Smeadly being a EVE player and witnessing how CCP does it successfuly, I also understand that SOE has been listerning to it Beta/General Planetside 2 community so its a good sign.

From previous interviews like the Reddit one, Smed's comes across as humbled and wanting to use SOE's own IP to create a decent MMO to avoid artistic clashes with other companies which I believe was the problem in the past especially in SWG case. I'm going to chance it one more time with Smed's & SOE due to playing the all the right overures with EQN and not having anything to lose at this stage of the MMO genre and I don't think that anyone has anything to lose by giving SOE one last chance either

I think the fact he said sandbox 'style' is a prelude to a get-out-clause. This is hype talk to get people interested. The big AAA MMO companies are slowly coming around to the fact that players are wanting a proper sandbox mmo, just look at the top 5 development games on this site.

A Sandbox is a sandbox, it doesnt have a 'style' it is what it is. But I guess the fact that SOE is pandering to the demands of the players is a good thing, themeparks have become stale and washedout, they have been done to death while sandbox games have been left in the shadows of indie developers, truth is themeparks are the lazy games to develop, marketing guys proudly patting each other on the back for selling crap with little effort, suddenly they are now standing there wondering why the boss is shouting at them because thier $100 million dollars of the 'next best thing' is failing so hard, maybe SOE has realised they have to actually create an excellent game with talented devolpers for a change.

Lets hope they can deliver, but in al honesty, I think we are still quite a few years away from a true AAA sandbox, EQNext is just the first tiny step.

well after reading that i think we can  possibly assume that traditional classes will be in the game. I really do hope though that they dont have levels and experience though.  I am so tired of levels and exp. Lets hope they have a better way that is more immersive and organic

i started a dwarven cleric way back at the begining, and hopefully ill end as one as well :)

Hopefully EQN gets it's own forum at least on here soon, or an offical forum would be nice.

Who did wrong? The advertiser hired to sell the game or the consumer who put faith in advertising?

Yes, they had PVP servers, now only 1 is left I believe. I don't know what the loot conditions were.

I remember the arguments when Rift launched between PVE purists and PVP players, PVE purists don't want any PVP on their servers at all and will refuse to play in games with PVP, some PVE players don't mind.

I would not be suprised to see EQN launch with multiple server types, could be some of the following.

1. PvE

2. PvP faction (evil vs good)

3. PvP ffa

Then you could have various loot conditions on one or all the pvp types...They have shown that they like to have multiple types of servers.  Not saying they have done a great job with it, but hopefully they have learned and will do it right, if it is being built from the ground up.  They even had special events in EQ, where they had a permadeath level competition...

I like the direction, I was hoping they would have something a little more sandboxish, as the current themeparks have been easy/stale/boring imo.

Whatever EQ2 next is, it's not a sandbox unless 99% of the items in the game can be destroyed and created.

This is wrong - what led to the downfall of SWG (the shrinking in player numbers) was that they used wrong metrics and did ignore their playerbase to get the mystical "bigger one" out of nowhere.

SWG did in fact grow until SOE decided to fire up the jedi (holo)grind what led to the destruction of the community and a first reduction of their playerbase.

CU and NGE were total ignorance on the SOE side and the NGE is the biggest debacle in the history of MMOs up to today and why there is so much doubt when SOE is involved.

Haha what? How did you reach this conclusion?

Not enough funding? SoE is one of the most successful MMO companies out there. They had the funds to develop Planetside 2's engine from scratch (and it is an AMAZING engine). And how will it be like sandbox? GW2 is the opposite of a sanbox.

And why does sandbox mean PvP? SWG was PvE oriented, as was Asheron's Call.

Christ.

SWG was not PVE oriented during pre-cu and cu.  It became more pve oriented, but still was laregely pvp with the NGE/Trials of Obi Wan expansion that caused everyone to quit.  After that if you looked in the right places you would find pvp, but the GCW was never the same after the NGE.

I am at least hoping this will go well, and that's coming from a SWG and MxO Vet :( . Saying something and delivering are two very different things. It does seem like SOE is trying to turn itself around and get away from mistakes made in the past, which is good.

The one big thing I hope for is if EQN will "feel" solid. The biggest turnoff for me with "most" sandbox games is how it feels. like TSW for example (I am not saying it's bad, no need to defend, this is strictly my opinion..now that that's out of the way). It just felt off when I was playing it, the animation (although after going back it does feel much more solid now) , being in the world. GW2 love it or hate it is a good example of the feeling that I like, statability just moving around/attacking things (once again using it as example for my own opinion).

If I could get a sandbox game that felt stable, I would be in love. Hopefully SOE makes up for my dislike of them in the past.

Thank you for this interview post; very informitive.

I believe that the CU and NGE were reactions to pressure from LA.  It is very well understood that the CU & NGE was designed by SOE; but why?  LA was watching WOW and screaming for SWG to perform that way.  The game at the time had been pleagued with bugs. Patch day was a nightmare.  One bug would get fixed but end up causing two or more on what was thought to be an unrelated system.  This along with other metric reading screw-ups kept population declineing.  After WOW launched in '04, players fled to a better built game.  Both the CU & NGE were loaded buggy on top of a buggy system.  This coupled with stepping on players toes (CU: a. level based combat, b. weapon revamp. NGE: Killing the Alpha Class Jedi) produced the mass exodus that followed.  As a game SWG awsome in concept but piss poor in execution.

So as I understand it, your both right. ;)

Everquest started with a lot of quests. I know because I ran a site (EQ'Lizer) dedicated to them at launch. They weren't easy to find and didn't give great experience. But they probably had a few hundred at launch.

When SWG closed, a lot of attention had been payed to the GCW.  Planetary control was based on base placement and faction combat.  The city invasions were designed to attract folks to PVP but could be done as PVE to an extent.  Yes, this combat was in the confines of the last version of the NGE but show me a game today that matches its complexity.  Based on the GCW system that was installed in the end showed which faction won that given servers(galaxy) war.  I was on Ahazi and the Empire dominated.

Well I for one am incredibly excited about EQNext. As an Beta Tester or EQ1 .. who played for 7 years I have to say. I am ready to see new life breathed into Norrath. EQ2 never captured me as much as the first EQ did. However I did actually go back to it last year and enjoyed playing it with some friends, still it never had the magic that came from EQ1.

I will say I am hopeful that some of the features that EQ1 had at launch will be in this new installment. Granted much more up to date.

These would be

REAL IMPACT Lighting effects. Going into Dungeons without light sources or enhanced racial visions means you are BLIND. Screen goes black. I played a Human in EQ1, and I remember my first fall into the pit trap in Befallen to find myself staring at a black screen and hearing the sound of a skeleton rising and laughing as it killed me. I could see its spell effects light up momentarily. With the advanced lighting that graphics engines of today. This would be amazing.

Killable EVERYTHING! Guards, merchants, NPCs you name it you can kill it.

To go along with that EQs old faction system was absolutely amazing. You could be killed in your own starting city by the different factions there if you werent careful. Why did this ever leave MMOs? Ohh ya I forgot I WIN (WOW) easy mode game clones. 8(

Class abilities that are designed to be helpful outside of combat situations. Abilitities that create markets alongside skills like crafting. TELEPORTING  for donations! yes thank you.

MASSIVE world with multiple RACIAL starting areas. GW2 did this and I love it.

Slower leveling, Slower gear Aquisition. Come on seriously do we need to be fully loaded up with magical equipment by level 5 and have to change out our gear every 3 or 4 levels. I went 24 levels before my Necro got his first truly magical set of robes in EQ1 Flowing Black Robes Remember them? I do. I couldnt tell you the name of the first set of magical robes I got on my elementalist in GW2 (which i just started playing 2 weeks ago). Why? Because they dont matter. Its just another piece of gear that is thrown at me. I played my Necromancer at the launch of EQ1... How many years ago was that? and I still remember getting my first Skull Staff, my First Flowing Black Robes (FBR).. I remember my paladin getting his Cloak of Flames. MAKE GEAR mean something! Aquire it slower. Dont throw it at people and make it meaningless.

I could go on with my rant. However I am done. Needless to say. I am excited about this news. Hopefully they look to the past of a truly great game (EQ1 early days) for inspiration and direction. However combine it with new technology.

I have said to my friends many times. If EQ1 was ever fully overhauled with a completely new graphics engine, and tweaked out features but used the same core game mechanics as early EQ1. I would go back.

Be safe all! I am OOM
