TSW.

I played both and TSW left a much better impression on me.

If you play games for the overall gameplay, go with Rift.  If you like story and searching on Google, play TSW.

I prefer PvE over anything nd whichever game has the best end game I'dprolly go with that.

Thanks guys

Why not try GW2?  If your not into gear progression, which correct me if I'm wrong, the same was true for FFXI then it offers TONS of proverbial content.

GW2 is tolerable as a side game but that's it. Also this thread is about Rift OR TSW so please stop putting GW2 into it.

Rift is your best bet, its a lot better done and has a great deal more content to enjoy. TSW has decent story but thats about it, it lacks the polish and content to be a real contender between the two. Neither are my cup of tea but the better of the two hands down is Rift.

It doesn't really offer that much variety and you might find playing it a bit lonely.

However both Rift and TSW both have limited free trials. You can try them both yourself, one after the other.

Disagree.  If your tired of WoW, TSW is the better game, it has a great leveling up experience and the questing is second to none IMO.  If your not tired of WoW, then why leave it for a clone that does everything worse?

Your assessment of The Secret World clearly differs from mine on every account.

This is probably why you're a fan and why I wouldn't even play it for free.

Rift has more to do than gw2. Not knocking gw2, its just the way it is. Gw2 hasnt been out as long and trion is the best at issuing new things to do in rift. Im not into gear progression and i enjoy all kinds of activities in rift that are simply not present yet im gw2. Perhaps time will change that. But for now, rift is heads above other recent themeparks in that regard.

I think gw2 has more visceral combat and a better balanced pvp game. The graphics are great and the ambiance is immersive. DEs are a unique take but i prefer rift events. Thats just personal preference though.

Oh, GW2 wasn't on his list. He asked about Rift and TSW.

It's the sad state of the genre. The next big title has as many threads discussing issues with it's business model than issues with the game itself.

The Critical Hit Pretzel!

Off what you said, Rift. Really though, you should give more of what your looking for. I enjoy Rift greatly and TSW wasn't for me, though i do give it props and think its a great game, a bit under-rated if anything.

Just really look at what your looking for. Are you wanting that old fantasy style or a more modern take? Do you like to focus on raiding or not so much? Just bring up main things you really want out of gameplay and people can give you a better choice. Right now your quite vague so its hard to give anything except Rift due to having more to do, though its not exactly the best way to judge for the best game to play either.

First I'd like to thank everyone for their information! I also would like to apologize for not being clear.

I am looking for who has the best raids. I don't expect TSW to have many since it is pretty new.

On top of that though I am looking for things to do outside of raiding. Such as side quests for earning rare items. (This is why I loved FFXI. For example you would have to do big fights to earn certain summons)

I am also looking for who has a better community. I feel that this is subjective to any game and depends on the person finding the right guild or group of friends to play with.

Ona side note I am currently playing the trial of rift. I'm only a level 5 necromancer. However it definitely feels like WoW but a better version of it.

Talent trees in rift are crazy with the amount of options they give you! I also appreciate that the passive skills for night elves gives you a flight and help reduce the time spent walking around during early levels.

Lastly, do I have to buy TSW to play the trial or does someone have a link or friend key to share with me to try it out?

There are currently no raids in TSW, first one is supposed to come out in next content update (late october - early november), top group content right now are nightmare dungeons, that are basically harder (way harder) versions of the regular dungeons.

There's a 3 day trial of TSW, if you manage to complete 30 missions (IIRC) then you get 2 extra days.

What can men do against such reckless hate?

TSW is very linear and shallow, and gets old after a short time. It has very little replay value.

Rift is the same - very linear, only one path to max level, small cramped world.

And if you want to go for a sword and sorcery MMO, then go for GW2 instead of Rift - much better game in every aspects - and no subscription fee too.

EDIT:

I've read your additional posts in the thread.

If you're looking for the best raids, stay with WoW. No game comes even remotely close, and definitely not Rift or TSW. I'd actually rather recommend EQ2 than Rift for raids.

Saw you post saying you are looking for Raids.

Stay with WoW. If you want something different but the same then give Rift a try.

I found the underlined comment to be contradictory to say the least. You say that Rift has a small cramped world and I find the GW2 instanced zones to be no better.

I like GW2, but Rift has a true mmo feel to it. GW2 is lacking in the mmo drawing power IMHO.

GW2 has no raids, not relevant to the discussion.

Having played both Rift and TSW (as well as WoW and FFXI), if you're looking to have more to do including raiding and pvp, I'd say Rift.  It's been out there longer, has a lot more content of the two, and there's a rather large (to put it lightly) expansion coming out soon (Storm Legion).  Having said that, I haven't been on Rift in a while, having let my subscription lapse and I'm currently waiting to see what happens with the expansion from friends that still play it on a regular basis.

I'm not saying I stopped playing Rift because it was a bad game, but I got bored.  While I feel it's better than WoW, it's finally lost it's luster for me as I've been pretty bored with the "wizards & warriors" fantasy setting.  Also I feel they've been making some decisions and changes that is starting to "dumb it down," kind of in the way that WoW is becoming more and more "simplistic" to become more accessible and attract a bigger audience.  Also, it no longer really matters which side (faction) to really start in other than changing your backstory a little and leveling path for the first quarter to half of your leveling life.  Even in PVP, they'll put opposing factions on the same team and you'll find yourself fighting your own bretheren quite often.  If I heard correctly, they're opening trade between the factions as well as the races themselves.  Please, correct me if any of this is wrong.  The upcoming expansion looks quite promising in terms of content though, so I'm keeping an eye on it and may return, at least for a little while.

If you desire a tremendous amount of story, lore, and background, then I'd say TSW.  I'm currently playing and see myself doing for quite some time.  I love the story, the missions, and it has some of the best dungeons, imo.  I think the voice acting and cutscenes really pull you in.  It's held in a "modern" universe which breathes some new life into MMOs for me.  I love the investigation missions which can really exercise my brain (translating latin anyone?) and the atmosphere, overall, is very attractive to me.  I've played Final Fantasy XI and loved it because of my familiarity with it's background.  The lore of TSW, in my opinion, blows it away.

TSW is very new and just like any new game, there are bugs, things to polish, and content that needs to be added.  To their credit, their intention is to put out a new "issue" or update about once a month.  I look forward to each and every one.

TSW has a more refreshing (new) feeling and better story telling; however, after the story, the game dies so it's not a game you play for years.  Rift is much like WoW / EQ2 ara but with more action (and still growing stronger).  Rift will also keep you busy will all the ingame grind mechanics.  TSW is more single player and Rift in more multiplayer.

I think TSW and Rift are both really different in PVE, but both excellent in their own ways. I have a lifetime sub to TSW and I'm monthly subbed to Rift.

When I want something serious, gloomy, scary, and "substantial" (in my opinion) I play TSW. I love the contemporary horror setting and I find game play quite challenging. The down side for me is that there aren't that many players running around in the world. Also, I love pvp and while this game has a lot of pvp potential, it is currently poorly implemented.

Rift offers you a lot of choices. A lot. I can come in and do some easy instant adventures, but the difficulty can ramp up quite a bit if you go to the right places. There are tons of things to do from fishing and cooking to hardcore raiding (and I haven't done any of those yet, because there are other things I do still leveling up).

Both games have trials, though TSW's is only 3 days, I believe.

I agree!

Everquest 2 dungeons and raids are fantastic!

Between TSW and Rift in my opinion right now Rift is a better option.

Soon TSW will be FTP and as all Funcom games it is always better start to play it after a while to avoid issues, annoyances and lack of content. Funcom games are unique and creative but plagued with issues inside and outside the game and in my opinion is safer to wait for the new direction the game will take.

Guild Wars 2 is also a great option!

In the end it is just a matter of opinion, but at the moment I would recommend Everquest 2, Guild Wars 2 and  Rift (especially EQ2 and GW2) over TSW.

Edit- I gave you my honest opinion, but I think you should keep your eyes on TSW too.

Good luck with your choice and have fun.
