Originally posted by defector1968 Maybe inaccurate, maybe not, but it's the only one sitre with this kind of data. There's not a site like VGChart for MMO population :( BTW we are a little OT, maybe it's better coming back IT :) (and i don't like L and L2, so.... where's the problem? :D) |

WoW was the first good MMO launch, it was praised for being so playable from the get go. Apart from server lag and queues purely because they didn't expect so many people, it was almost perfect compared to other MMOs. Who could blame them for not expecting so many people? MMOs never saw so many people until WoW so you can forgive them for that. What annoys me is when developers say today they didn't expect so many peple......... bullshit have you not seen every other MMO since WoW? Now though a playable MMO is the norm from launch, people expect to have a perfect AAA MMO + all the content WoW has and why shouldn't they if you're going to make a game like WoW because why not just play WoW instead of a worse version? GW2 tried to seperate itself from the WoW name as much as possible so they wouldn't be held to the same standard and it paid off for them. |

This is a pretty difficult list to manage or create to include ten titles, but here's my take based on personal enjoyment and the amount of time spent playing:
1) Ultima Online 2) Everquest 3) Shadowbane 4) Darkfall 5) Planetside 6) Star Wars: Galaxies 7) World of Warcraft 8) Lineage 2 9) Age of Conan 10) Matrix Online "This is life! We suffer and slave and expire. That's it!" -Bernard Black (Dylan Moran) |

Mind I don't play these anymore they just had the best memories:
FFXI - 1st mmo which always leaves an impression. DDO - Loved rebuilding my char 100 times and see what he was better/worse at. Mabinogi - Loved my pet collection.

I can't really say that I have a top 10, but my favorite was always SWG (preCU of course). It was very unique for the time. Actually, it's still pretty unique compared to a lot of the mainstream MMO's we see. I really would like to see the sandbox style MMO have a new golden age. I've heard of some new sandbox games in development, but I'll have to wait and see if they can capture the same spirit. I don't really care if they are identical, and I'm not looking for a clone, but if they have the kind of open world, player housing, and player driven economies that SWG had then it gets my seal of approval. So far EVE is the closest thing I've seen in spirit, but I just can't get that into an MMO where I'm primarily just a ship. Yeah, I know you can have limited wandering room on stations now, but that's just not enough. I want to play a person primarily.

i will type only those from my EXPERIENCE and not what is placed in history, and i have just seen videos and screenshots.
1) EVE 2) GW2 3) WoW 4) Lineage ][ 5) Fallen Earth 6) Rift 7) Age of Conan 8) Guild Wars 9) WarHammer Online 10) TERA my rate are based through the true innovation of each game and through the fun i had in these games ... (well in some of them i didnt had fun like WoW or AoC, but my friends had so i suppose they were fun to play general ..)

Wow had a terrible launch it was buggy as hell, had chunks of stuff missing like warlock and hunter talents and the servers kept going down. Then the bugs like loot stuck, charge through floor into space, inventory lock up, zoning changing settings, random lock ups and grinding to a halt with more than 50 people around. It launched in a buggier state than even warhammer (it wasn't as bad bug wise as Aoc though)
City of heroes was the first really good launch, and remains one of the best launches still. |

Best mmo's of all time... hmm that's a loaded question. How do you measure it?
Eve - even tho I've never been an avid fan had the cojones to allow a player-driven world and continue to run with it. I never paid a month for subscription but probably gets my number one vote. Everquest - everything i thought a great game should be and "beat me to it". Always a special place in my heart. City of Heroes - maybe better than wow to bring the non-gamers to gaming. Ridiculous replayability. Amazing memories. WoW - honorable mention for sheer numbers. |
