I thinly the lack of gear progression in pvp is a good thing

Of course you can no longer Blame being out geared for loosing.

People also cant use it as a crutch and be all like "OMG I pwned you so bad.  U R such a suxxzors n00b!" when that gear has no correlation to your actual skills as a player and is usually a) based on time played / spent raiding and / or b) gained with the help of other people who were already fully geared.

The inability to own everyone with "uber skillz" (aka gear that gives them an auto win vs weaker gear) is a huge problem for some people.

The downside though: You cant kick the shit out of a people who are higher level / better gear than you and then laugh at them while they rage and accuse you of hacking because you were so much better that even with level & gear advantage they couldnt take you on.

Yes I admit it. Watching people who think theyre amazing players rage and accuse me of hacking & cheating in any game, wether it be FPS or RPG, just because they learned a lesson in just how bad they are is one of my favorite and most amsuing hobbies. Though for some reason I tend to enjoy it more in FPS games. I dont know. Maybe its because of the mics and actually being able to hear the rage and sweet tears. If we had open mics in GW2 it could be quite entertaining in sPvP.

There is just NO point whatsoever to play other than to get new armor that I personally do not give a crap about.

Does anyone else feel the same? It's fun for a while, but then there is no point also. I want a game that gives me progress towards the time/skill/work I put into it.

So you actually don't like PvP?  You are only playing PvP because there is a carrot dangled in front of you?  Thats ok though, because i'd rather have people in my team that are doing it for the team and not latching on for a reward.  The whole point of gaming is for the fun element and entertainment value, well at least thats how I view gaming.  Games like pacman, mario, Tetris to name a few are all pointless because you don't get a reward for completing them?

Maybe you should complain to all the other entertainment companies for not getting a reward after using their products.

very much agreed.. also gotta to think you spend all that time getting top PVP gear in all those other games then what? in the case of the OP i'd assume they are done because progression is done. The cosmetic incentive for now is more than enough to get me playing as I'm still learning the classes and the multiple builds i can come up with.. Sure down the road i'll probably wan't something more like ladder ranks and such but for now what is there is a fine start and way more balanced than any other recent themepark I can think of at launch.. without a healer class and gear seperation it makes for some really close games most of the time... in many other themeparks only "enjoyable" pvp I really had was upto cap but once you hit cap it was basically which team had more top geared players or more healers would win almost every single time..

I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. If I buy a candy bar at a store, oftentimes, I will drop it... so that it achieves its maximum flavor potential. --Mitch Hedberg

The best short term move they vould make is allow the Spvp skins to be worn in the real game world.  I'm not sure what could be done beyond that without massive overhauls.

Another thing you get with gear to win games

Afkers
Botters
People who go "just let them win we get tokens quicker that way"

And other associated asshats.

It's cosmetic only in this little section of the game. The mist area can't be any more than 1% of the game worrld.

You know I disagree with your feeling about gear. We've talked about it before. I have never said "He beat me because he has better gear" I feel like that's a cop out.

This is the problem with the mmorpg genre.

Everything needs some end reward to work toward.

When having a fun time playing in a game isn't enough we have a problem.

The OP makes a MMO sound like work, fun is secondary to the goal and the work needed to gaining this goal.

OP, If the game isn't fun enough to play why would you make yourself suffer through it just to gain a reward?

I think if people stopped playing these games once the fun stopped they would be much happier.

Like the majority of the MMO community they work toward goals suffering through terrible games.

Maybe its addiction that has them doing that? You don't see people suffering through street fighter, Dota or Madden...

They play because the game is fun not because they get a new reward for playing.

Why can't you pvp in GW2 because its fun? Why can't you pvp because you want to get better? Seems to be the motivation in the majority of multi-player games. Why does the mmorpg genre need to be different?

Its suppose to make it all 'skill based' but truthfully it needs something to spice it up. A leader board would do wonders but unfortunately they can't rake in cash from it like those 'arenas' so they seem to put it on the back burner, despite I feel being the best thing they can add for the least amount of 'work' needed (primarily database work with minimal Programming/graphic design needed compared to say Guild Vs. Guild which is a big need).

we have had this talk before and as I have said I have been top geared in PVP in several games and in those players with no PVP gear or lowest tiered pvp had no shot in hell in beating me.. I could literaly auto attack them to death in some cases.. looks like Rift is getting smart and going the no gear seperation route though and hope more games follow suit. There is a big difference in feeling you "acomplished" something in beating a higher ranker and not having a shot in hell. In GW2 seeing someone in that sweet looking PVP gear and me taking them down in my basic set gives me a good sense of acomplishment.

If the leaderboards and stuff were single server, I wold agree. But most likely theyre going to be implementing things that span the entire game and are a lot more complex than single server stuff. Thats also why some of the initial problems they had witht he TP were such a hassle and took awhile for them to get it fixed.

you dont want progress, you want loot. ^^

WoW made a change with "a" You get the first tier pvp gear within about 3 days 4 hours each day. If a person doesn't have time/will  to do this., they shouldn't be playing mmorpgs.

Raiding and Arena does not take skill now? I think it's great that the raider and arena player get's something a little more (faster it's not really more anymore) than the dungeon/battle ground runner.

You don't honestly think everyone with good gear is getting carried do you? Sure some will pay to get carried, but that's such a small percentage of the base, it's not woth mentioning.

Yep, imo this is a major issue with this game. Once you ding 80 and buy full exotic gear, there is nothing else to do which can progress your character. I mean if PvP conquest would actually give you access to some special areas, crafting, gear or whatever, that would be something but right now it is just completely pointless.

And dont give me that crap about the point is that it is fun, that is obvious but we are talking about something with more depth. And beside, doing the same thing over and over without any benefit ceases to be fun, the second or Xth time.

IM glad I no longer play video games for meaningless pixel rewards...

PLaying through Dishonored right now because i enjoy the Fpv stealth gameplay and i want to see how the story ends.

Playing Dota 2 because i get owned in it and want to get better.

Playing Skyrim because i love the world, gameplay and love stumbling on quests that i had no idea existed.

Playing Planetside 2 because the massive battles are amazingly enjoyable and I've built up this faction hatred.

Playing Guild Wars 2 because the world amazes me, I love my class and I kind of suck in sPVP so i want to get better.

^ These are the reasons you should be playing a game. You're not supposed to suffer through it for some meaningless item...

If the leaderboards and stuff were single server, I wold agree. But most likely theyre going to be implementing things that span the entire game and are a lot more complex than single server stuff. Thats also why some of the initial problems they had witht he TP were such a hassle and took awhile for them to get it fixed.

I have to disagree. Having a background in programming, Database really are far simpler then you think. The hardest part would be to ensure consistency in the system and that information is correctly taken in. The databse itself for the leaderboard is practically as simple as an excell spread sheet, just holding that information though not doing to much with it. The most difficult part is connecting into that single server which the database is located on but once thats done and its all linked its pretty simple.

The TP primarily had issues due to the large amount of people accessing it at once with added ecommerce (buying gems) and other components making that large influx of players that much more difficult to manage. A ranked board wouldn't have to have any data being manipulated, instead being handled when taking that information from the player and updating it, something that can be scaled down to be done only every so often to prevent stress on the server.

The biggest issue for them is likely the cost, requiring a server in place to store that information (which COULD be virtualized, though a dedicated server would be a better option for better performance.) added with the normal costs of having employees doing the work to get it implimented. That initial cost, combined with the fact there isn't a method to gain money out of it like the other pvp components (at least not directly) make it a 'smaller' priority.

PLaying through Dishonored right now because its a fun game and i want to see how the story ends.

You're not supposed to suffer through it for some meaningless item...

very much agreed and why i continue to play such games... the "progression" everyone talks about got me hooked many years back but once you get there you have to think was all that work and effort worth it? looking back i'd say no for many of them because I honestly was forcing myself through to get that top gear.. In GW2 i jump into sPVP because i'm actually enjoying the fights and want to play with builds to see which I play best with and is most effective for me.

It's one of those "fun for an hour or two ... the FIRST day.." then it just becomes routinely boring and pointless. I mean I do not want to bash GW2 but this is just a general concern as a gamer. There is just NO point whatsoever to play other than to get new armor that I personally do not give a crap about.

Does anyone else feel the same? It's fun for a while, but then there is no point also. I want a game that gives me progress towards the time/skill/work I put into it.

When a game stops being fun for you, stop playing it.
