City of Heroes fans have been busy since the announcement that the game would be shutting down this fall. Groups of players have organized in-game events, online petitions and more. Sadly, NCSoft says that, while they've heard players' voices, there are currently no plans to change the decision.

Developers forgot what made mmos special. Until we get that back the genre wont move forward. |

Sad news indeed but all things live and then they die. Amazing video, I hope you all find another mmo to enjoy.

Originally posted by Mannish At least now we know where we stand with them. But this has been the story of 2012. SWG died, go play EQOA, that died, go play PSU, that goes to get shut down, go play DCUO, that died with SOE in EU and ProSieben is crap, go play COH that laste 2 weeks, and now is set to close. There is no stability any more! All comanies are just into making MASSIVE profit, except SOE, who resurrceted EQmac and operated completely free to play - no cash shop etc. SOE had stability, but then do stupid and partner with a lack of security company, called ProSieben. 4 (or about 10 if you count SOE closing down EU to ProSieben) MMOs shut down within the year, and no new MMOs worthy to replace them Currenttly I am playing STO, but I wonder which one is next to shut down. STO has a 6 month plan, so that has 6 months at least. SOE highlighted a 12 month plan with SWG at the start of 2011, implying that they work out a 12 month plan each year, so no worries of closure before 2012 or even 2013... Guess not!! MMOs are on their way out - they are getting shorter and shorter and shallower and shallower and free to play is being abused and is simply a rip off, instead of being implemented smartly - The only thing that should be purchased in free to play is extra content, which gets you to play quests that get you items instead of using shop to instantly to buy items without playing game, plus things like extra char slots Star Trek Online - Best Free MMORPG of 2012 |

Played this game for a month or two at release, never really got into it, but remember it fondly anyway. Sad to see it go.

I am honestly sorry to see ti go. A little part of me has always been with the game, i did play it extensively, and i do love it. Watch the video and know is going to close made me feel a bit heavy of heart, i have many fond memories of that game. http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5120/7210363296_8357bee9de.jpg |

This is unfortunate for the fans of the game, I know this was the game of choice for Super Hero MMOers. The problem is that they are a niche group in a niche group.

I have many great memories of this game. Sad to hear that they couldn't keep her running any longer. I sincerely hope that those of you who are currently playing find a new mmo home sooner than later.

Much sympathy to CoH fans.
I can understand. MY BF and I played Hellgate right up to the very second Flagship shut off the servers. I remember everyone gathering around and the various guilds were running around saying their final goodbyes. Sad moment.
Hope CoH fans find something new to give many more years of good mmo memories. |

they could have sold the rights and the code to the game, not for the millions they'd expect (I remember when people were trying to buy the rights to EnB, so I know what absurd amounts these companies ask for), but they'd rather just have it dissapear completely rather than have someone else bring it back and make it profitable.
In other words, it's all a load of bullcrap they are feeding us. They don't want to service it and they don't want anyone else to do it if they don't. |

Funny thing about earth and beyond, EA shut it down because they didn't want it to compete with sims online. the sad thing? sims online pretty much died the first month it was out, by the 2nd most people left, EnB lasted over a year and still had a healthy playerbase when ea closed it. From what I hear EA didn't want EnB to comepete with Sims online, which is kinda stupid when both games cater to 2 very diffrent types of players.
Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either: A. Proven right (if something bad happens) or B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens) Either way, you can't lose! Try it out sometime! |

The last MMO I ever played seriously...I kept very fond and good memories of this game.
CoX is a start with the minimum I expect from any new MMOs...I would probably still be playing it if they haven't been on a nerfing crusade (to balance a PvP which never interest the player base.
If you draw it to the bottom, a RPG experience is about been with a few friends (not hundred of strangers competing against you), to have an epic journey to save/destroy the world and somehow manage it against impossible odds, all while sitting quietly around a table and drinking a cola/beer. It doesn't have to be turn base, but if you lose yourself in the shooter pitrap, you lost quite a few players. It doesn't have to be PvE, but you can't have half of the players lose everytime. It doesn't have to be with only 6 persons, but if you can't name everyone you are with and talk about how they are (nicely or badly) for at least 10 minutes, if not hours, then you have too many peoples around you! You should rarely be indifferent to another player, and you should almost never see them as competitors...not that I don't like to compete, but first and foremost, the game should make you see all players as options that you may opt for to advance in a way or another.
For this, CoX did a LOT better than most other "MMOs" out there, and I salute you!

I remember the day SWG died. It sucked... especially knowing what has replaced them, e.g., half-hassed corporate created entities such as SWTOR etc.

Not surprised this is NCSoft we are talking about. I think every single MMORPG released (developed) by them have either shut down or have gone F2P or P2W with severe server merges; in the WEST.
They seem to be a pretty "aggressive" company in terms of when to shut down a game. It seems that it isn't worth the time and effort (for the top 2% of the company) to keep a game running if it is barely running above the breaking even point.
I mean is there currently any successful P2P NCSoft (developer) MMORPG in 2012?

Sucks to see it go but make there big metorites fall from the sky and aliens spawn everywhere and we kill all the aliens but then somebody who is meant to be a good guy gets angry and the world ends up in little pieces everywhere. Never played the game before but the END OF WORLD quest or would be a good way to go not that there can every be any good way to end a game.
This isn't a signature, you just think it is. |
