Tomorrow's just a future yesterday...

OP  10/02/12 9:19:58 AM#1

I got to Orr. I was looking forward to more exploration and seeing the end of my personal story. I don't know if I will accomplish either.

You fight for every inch you traverse in Orr. You fight to get to your next storyline point and fight to clear that point out before entering. You fight masses upon masses of undead within the instance and then exit to find yourself surrounded by more masses of undead trying to beat you senseless. It is getting old. Very old.

I realize there is a war on and that Orr is the homebase of Zhaitan, but it is getting truly ridiculous.

While going from point A to point B, you have DEs happening everywhere along the way. This means waves of undead come running at you, whether you participate or not. Forget about trying to find vistas. Jumping puzzles are the least of your worries here. I have not even harvested one thing in Orr due to fighting fatigue. Factor into this mix that the waypoints often times get "contested" so when you do finally succumb to the shear numbers of undead, you end up going backwards MUCH further than you desire to, just to fight the same shear numbers of undead you just got through just to get back to where you died.

My weapons against the storyline bosses do nothing. EVERY last fight lasts a lifetime and I usually die at least once. I am not the best fighter in the world, but I am no slouch, either. You cannot avoid the evil red circles when they cover the whole floor because there are so many of them. Dodge doesn't do much for that situation.

It has gotten so bad that I get knocked down and don't even try anymore to fight back and revive. What's the point? There is more of the same around the next corner.

Don't get me wrong. I enjoy a good fight. Combat can be fun. But the shear amount of combat going on is just too much for me in Orr. I don't do WvWvW because I am not that into combat. And if I do defeat Zhaitan, does Orr change?

I was never very gung-ho on the combat system to begin with and this is just driving that shortcoming (in my opinion) home. In Orr, you spend more time debilitated than fighting. You get knocked around like a ragdoll, Dazed and confused, feared like a little child, frozen like a popsicle, rooted in spiderwebs, and shot at by war machines to be thrown into a new group of undead. Occasionally, this kind of thing lends to interesting combat. Something extra once in awhile. But A-Net overdoes this to the extreme for my tastes.

I still have my alts I have fun with, but with Orr to look forward to, the air has kind of gone out of those balloons, too. I tried. I really did try.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

OP - your sig pretty much sums it up

I just hit Orr for the 2nd time with my Guardian (warrior was my first 80) - I can pretty much run and ignore the mobs, I couldn't do that with my warrior.

You are not alone who dislikes ORR. I spend most of my time in WvW on my 80 engineer. After i got my 100% zone completion i would never want to go back there. I am waiting for them to fix the respawn rate and reduce mob density. Till then i am rolling alts and staying in W v W.

Didn't they already do that with the october 1st patch? I'm running around in Orr without getting almost killed every 3 steps I take these days. I did also upgrade some gear, but the whole area seems to have gotten a decrease in mob density and respawn rate already. It's actually viable to run instead of teleport now.

It's that or I'm just getting better at avoiding mobs. I usually only die when I take on a few mobs and discover there's one or two veterans in the pack.

Farming gold for extra character slots (gold) and going on alts to do the dailies because I Orr all you find is undead, undead and more undead. So TLDR I feel your pain but I got over it when I made 80 and bought my rare set of gear.

Read your own sig OP.  Follow accordingly.  A game that that isnt shallow wont need the ridiculous hype and hardcore forum defenders, it will be easy to spot...others will hate it XD

I don't know, I like Orr, I would hate to see it nerfed.  I solo all the time both run through and fighing my way.In some cases you simply can't run through you have to fight. I've not had issue with mobs respawning while I'm fighting the next onem, for me, the pace seems about right.

I harvest resources but typically you have to clear the area to do it, usually it's just one mob. When I'm harvesting more often then not I run into someone doing the same thing, usually we don't say a word just join up and bounce from node to node. It goes much faster with just one other person. Doing that we usually run into an event and more folks show up. For me thats when the game starts to flow and the fun increases.

I will say at this point I have a full set of exotics a combo of crafted and karma gear. I think it helps but I only had a combo of 75 and 70 crafted gear when I hit the zone and it was more difficult but do able. I had to be careful if I was on my own to get one or two mobs and can handle several now. I think by the time you hit Orr you should be able to afford one piece of exotic karma gear which should help a great deal.

I don't have a lvl 80 toon yet, my highest one is 63 but what I've read here and on guild chat, I'm not sure If I even want to go to Orr

If it's not broken, you are not innovating.

Cursed Shore is just kind of like one of GW2's trashcan zones, simply filled with all kinds of junk everywhere that you have to do around, jump through hoops and find a way through the rats maze sometimes.  The in-game map isn't very good is some places especially, leaving you to endlessly wander around trying to find how to get past a portion that wasn't drawn correctly on the map.  Trash mobs are everywhere, in every corner, which is simply silly for exploration.  Make the zone bigger and more spread out? .. really..

I agree with Orr, but it's also like that pretty much everywhere, since GW2 is more about action than being a RPG.  No matter where you are, a safe hub is only 5-10 seconds away from an enemy camp.  I find excessive combat in any game boring, and I just end up running through mobs, continually having a trail behind me wherever I go :-)  Not boring at first, but boring after a thousand+ kills .. I mean make combat special, not just a meaningless experience.

I'm actually glad that Orr exists...

There are a lot of places in the game without constant fighting...basically every other zone.  I think it's good that there is a place to go to that is an absolute warzone.

Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?

I have enjoyed the game more than I thought I would, but I tend to agree with you on Orr.  I was looking forward to Orr because of people talking about the chained DEs and no hearts.  I got there, and I have pretty much abandoned the character I have there.  It reminds me of Rift with their packing in of mobs.  I don't like the WvW nearly as much as I was expecting mainly because it isn't as much like DAOC as I thought it would be with different sides forming alliances to take down the dominant side.  Maybe once they put in the 2 week timers it will happen, but I don't know.   I like th sPvP much more than I thought I would, so I guess it balances out, but I don't see sPvP having the same potential longevity as would be the case for WvW if I liked it.

They toned it down? I guess I did notice a slight reduction, now that I think about it. There are still "undead alleys" that one has to fight through. And once hit, your run speed slows down (if that is even possible) and you get caught. Those zombies can move fast!

I am playing a ranger and I have to admit that my pet draws more aggro than *I* ever would. I "park him" when I can, but take any damage of any kind and out he pops :)

I am the type of player that tries to find ways around fights. I love stealth classes. It may be slower going, but the excitement involved does it for me, knowing I could be "caught" at any moment, sometimes surrounded by enemies.

I'll back off and play my alts for awhile. Then I'll come back and try some more :)

I also understand that many players enjoy this kind of setting for their characters. I see many of them in lower zones killing everything in sight. They're the ones who attack the Moas and Fireflies while doing escort duty :) They cannot seem to get enough of combat. And that is great. For them. That's just not my own playstyle.

[EDIT]
PS: I have also been on the receiving end of mobs coming back from chasing runners through the zone. Thanks for the add-ons, folks :)

when i first got to it i realized that it was one of the only open PvE zones designed for duo's or small groups- too bad people dont realize this and just cry about it like they always do. The mobs are harder, they have more CC and skills, they spawn more frequently, and the DE's are harder and longer- take the hint they are trying to give you and form a group.

These are the same people that ignore others in map chat who are trying to form DE/completion parties.

i agree every zone I have been to so far has a tons of wide open areas with mobs scattered about but not a whole lot going on at every second.. I'd actually welcome more zones that are all out wars to mix it up a bit.

Everyone says that they have problems with Orr but I never really have (80 engineer here).

Personally I don't like it because I think it's dull and the mobs annoy the shit out of me with their cripple/knockdowns, but I don't find the density THAT bad.... I can easily get around, at least on cursed shore where I have been mostly lately.

This thread did nothing for me but discourage me.  It certainly didn't make me want to hit 80 at all.  I hate this stupid website.  It ruins for me almost every game I play by being so negative at every turn.  I want to not care what other people think of games, but it never fails....I read over here and then immediately feel like quitting.  Thanks for another uplifting thread.

I like a good challenge and I like that Anet has made Orr very unfriendly to disorganized individuals who are so very opposed to rolling w/ friends/guildies and forming PUGs.

So many zones you don't have this problem, all of them relevant for XP and resources (mats) even once you hit 80 thanks to the down leveling- I like the idea of having to run with other people to survive and prosper in Orr.

I run around in Orr with pretty much zero chance of dying on my warrior (even though I run in a DPS spec). In honesty I can't see how anyone dies out there at all unless they get incredibly unlucky or go afk.

Because of that though, moving through Orr is just tedious, the mobs can't kill me but you still have to put up with being pulled or stunned or generally aggroing some npc every 3 seconds. Boosting speed and dodging every so often, well you are simply bypassing the content because it is a pitta. Instead the npcs should either be more sparse or less boring.

Orr is meant to be an undead filled super area, but the fact of the matter is in it's current state it isn't "hard" or "immersive", it is just fking tedious. Note: That is in my subjective opinion.

I have zero problems and I play on my thumper build Warr.  Gear goes a long way, once I upgraded my gladiator gear (I craft my weapons and armor and go for the rare quality) from lvl 65 gear to lvl 80 gear it's pretty easy.  I can even solo veteran mobs no problem, don't know who had problems with that. In the second zone map of Orr so things might change later on.  But I like how the mob density is, this is Ziatans domain and not someplace we can just stroll in and lollygag around in.  If your having probmles then group up which I thought was a feature of Orr, a more group oriented zone.  But yeah the respawn at times is a bit harsh.  Was doing a skill point fight and has respawns pop up behing me, thk god for vengence so could finish off the skill point boss before being defeated.

Also I'm assuming people are building glass cannons whicvh is waht causing a lot of headaches for some or the majority, I go for a right balance.
