My first video card was purchased to run Earth and Beyond. IIRC it was an ATI Radeon All in Wonder. Cant recall what series number it would have been at that time.

I can't remember the card but I bought it for Grand Prix Legends. Sometime around 98-99.

Everquest in '99. I saw that using MB graphics meant I could barely move and mobs were often 20' in front of where I saw them. It was an nVidia/GeForce 16MB as far as I can recall, something like that.

Ti400 for EQ and SWG way back when video cards were first coming out to replace the old on board video motherboard with a 16-bit 286 CPU.

I didn't buy it, as I was 14 at the time, but in 1999, Everquest, I convinced my parents they needed a new card to make our computer run faster (so EVERYONE who uses it could enjoy the upgrade). It still took a minute to transition zones though :-/. --------------- Me buying my own graphics card? I would say Eve Online/Planetside since they came out about the same time. I remember my computer did not meet the minimum requirements graphics card wise, so I went out and bought a new one for $200 (thing WAS a beast.) Then most recently...buying a whole new computer in general...for..well...any game that comes out and I want to run :P I am entitled to my opinions, misspellings, and grammatical errors. |

EQ1. I remember playing on my old system and everything was fine. Then one day they released a graphic update and suddenly all of my toons were naked. I was still kind of a pc noob back then. It took me a while to figure out my onboard graphics weren't enough for the game anymore!

Diamond Monster 3D video card (Original Voodoo?) for playing Quake back in the late 90's.
My first PC game, though, was Leisure Suit Larry in the Lando f hte Lounge Lizards, which was back in the late 80's. 25 years ago. |

I think I purchased a Voodoo card for one of those Descent games. I miss that zero-gravity tunnel shooter.

Yep, bought the very same one for Quake 1. Diamond Monster 3D, the add-on card with the famous Voodoo I 3dfx chip. Must be 1997 or so. Though, even before that, I got a Diamond FireGL. That card was meant to be used for stuff like CAD and 3D applications, but, wow, did it make the space sims look good! Though I have to say it was awfully expensive. I remember playing Wing Commander 3 or some such space combat game with that, and being really impressed.

Originally posted by Zeymere VooDoo came to mind as well. For me it was 2x VooDoo2 (serial setup) in my old 386DX. Combined they had 24Mb memory which was more than the 8Mb I had on board *ROFL* Bought these cards for Quake II at the time iirc But my 1st real card for a computer game would have been a EGA card (16 colors and it was a lot back then :D) for my old 8088 in 1991 to play Heroes of the Lance (AD&D Dragonlance RPG game) Demigoth's RPG adventures ~ My blog ASUS M4N72-E |

Here's another thing, though: Back in the early 90s, the purchase that showed that you were "serious" about PC gaming was not the video card (didn't need it, really). It was actually the sound card. I remember buying my first true sound card back in the very early 90s. It was either a Sound Blaster 1.5 or a 2.0. The traps in Prince of Persia sounded wicked with that! :)
