I took the game to level 40 and left it, I don't know why, maybe because it's just feels like the same ole same ole. I will come back to GW2 whenever I get the itch to. So I guess it was a flop for me in which it didn't hold my attention after 1 month.

Hit 80 feels like a game id play on xbox, personally to me it was a flop.  That ofc being my opinion.

Well financially it looks like some analyst projected sales of about 3.12 million.  If this is the overall concensus, it looks like GW2 has about 1.1 million to go to hit that number.

Its possible that people are just playing less (in some cases) precisely because it is B2P.  There's no pressure to play as much as possible, before the month's up.  Look at how suddenly TOR lost players, at the end of the month.  I always thought it was odd that people would play a game more, that they planned on quitting, but it does seem to sometimes be the case.  Maybe even often.

 I think a sub fee makes people have to make a tough decisions about the game and maintaining a sub. It also promotes trying to get as much out of it as possible as soon as possible when your having to pay a monthly fee to access the game.

 If the game is just OK and something they would not want to play that often, a lot of people decide to just move on and cancel the sub. GW2 is still on my hard drive and I even logged in the other night to try a different class, it only lasted a couple of heart quests before I got bored and logged back out, but the point is I might log in every once in a while, but if it was P2P I would of canceled the sub and never looked back.

Full servers during most of the time of the day!

WvW Queues during all hours on most servers!

Everywhere you go there are players!

 

 

 

 

 

 

Kind of hard to call that a flop but then again any official numbers cant be proven till the first expansion which I predict will see at least 70% retention rate.  Games that are flop show their colors within the first few weeks, GW2 has been out a month+ and is still going strong plus is near the top on Amazons list.

Another million sales before the end of the year.   I just don't see it happening with the current status of the game.   This makes it a financial flop too.    This wasn't totally unexpected, since it was just another WOW clone..

We can't say for sure if it's a flop financially. It seems ArenaNet was overwhelemed with the amount of players at launch, maybe they weren't expecting that much. No one knows for sure.

But for me, personally, I'd call it a flop. I didn't play the beta test only for not spoiling the actual game, so I wasn't sure what I was getting in to despite the videos I watched beforehand. They looked great, and it was the sole purpose I got them. But actually sitting down and playing the game I find myself getting bored after an hour or so - not what I expected.

Hear Forbes estimated that WoW would lose 25% of its base to GW2. I don't think that has happened either.

     IT seems like every MMO follows the same pattern on this site:

1. in beta every MMO is the greatest thing ever

2. at release the games are promising but the bad release is hurting it

3. one month after release the game is crap and is a failure despite what the sales numbers say

4. players start looking for the next great MMO that is over 2 years away from release and proclaim how great it is though they have never played it

OMG it's b2p, even if it sucks ass (which it doesn't), how can it be a flop? For the cost of the box, you can play this MMO forever without sub fees. Sure it may not appeal to everyone, what game does? It would be great to have more MMO's like this.

I'm suprised game companies are still trying to make MMO's anymore. Since no matter what they make, they can't win. Good luck waiting for the holy grail of gaming.

What is it with you people?

 

There are tons of MMORPGs on the market today -- none of them have had over a million subscribers six months after release.  Who cares if the game has 11 million players or 50,000?  As long as whatever servers exist have a healthy population and the game maintains a development team which is continuing to add content to the game to please their core playerbase, it shouldn't be considered a failure.

Maybe it isn't a universal success, but as long as you're enjoying it, that's all that should matter.

Maybe it isn't for everyone.. but the game is bursting at its seams with people. I know the vocal minority here like to spout off all day long, but this game is not lacking players on any server at this time. It has sold well and will continue to sell well over the holiday seasons. 

Do I have some gripes yes.. bots and some busted events. Both of which I can tolerate while they address it.

Its possible that people are just playing less (in some cases) precisely because it is B2P.  There's no pressure to play as much as possible, before the month's up.  Look at how suddenly TOR lost players, at the end of the month.  I always thought it was odd that people would play a game more, that they planned on quitting, but it does seem to sometimes be the case.  Maybe even often.

 I think a sub fee makes people have to make a tough decisions about the game and maintaining a sub. It also promotes trying to get as much out of it as possible as soon as possible when your having to pay a monthly fee to access the game.

 If the game is just OK and something they would not want to play that often, a lot of people decide to just move on and cancel the sub. GW2 is still on my hard drive and I even logged in the other night to try a different class, it only lasted a couple of heart quests before I got bored and logged back out, but the point is I might log in every once in a while, but if it was P2P I would of canceled the sub and never looked back.

I have no idea what the game plan (financially speaking) was for GW2, but I remember when I alpha'd GW1 back in the day, that was the idea that Anet was pimping, I hated the game and didn't buy into the b2p model. Not sure if I do yet, but I can't deny that it worked out for GW1. I have no clue what they spent to make GW2, but I imagine they'll have a better time recouping it in box sales and cash shop than other games that have started as P2P and switched to F2P as of late simply because they seem to have a better handle on what that market will bare. I haven't played the game mind you, the lore/world/setting just doesn't do it for me, so this is all outside looking in.

Seeing as it is still very popular, yes.

Sure, it isn't keeping everyone hooked, especially not the people who need the treadmill in an MMO to keep playing, but calling it a flop would be a gross exaggeration.

Only way it would be a flop; is if the first expansion sells somewhere below the 500k mark.

Do you seriously, really believe the game can ever fit this definition considering what the game has achieved so far?

Now a game can be a huge financial sucess, a huge sucess with the mmorpg community, or both. On a personal level the game flopped.  What's left to look at? The financials, which some analyst have projected 3.12 million box sales and taking 25% of WoW base by years end. GW2 needs quite a bit to hit those lofty numbers.

 

As far as population I stand by Xfire's play time numbers to predict a trend in population. For better or for worse Xfire is undefeated, predicting WoW 1st ever loss and the 2.2 million that followed, along with swtors dimise and the lack of projected population in TSW.  As we know GW2 is showing one of the steepest 1 month slides we've seen.
