another video just posted from Emmanuel on youtube.. he has always been a big advocate of the DE system and trying to get people to understand it better.. So here's his latest on the topic

I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. Excellent video that explains how it all works.

If it's not broken, you are not innovating.

This clip made me wonder how many of the player base misses most of the storylines just because they dont realize to hold on for a moment after the event. Usually when I'm in an event everybody vanishes in different directions, kinda like completing a quest in a quest hub game.

Anet should have explained more clearly the basics here, or perhaps the solution would be that the event NPC's start screaming at people to wait for a second? :P Cant blame people though, when the stage is done it's done, if there's no immediate indicator of anything else they propably will move on by default.

See, you can argue this point for ANY MMO.  I don't see how this is limited to GW2.

Release a game with a very large established fanbase from 10+ years of bnet history when the market was still emerging and the casual base had not yet been established, thus ripe for harvesting a momentious self perpetuating playerbase people never leave because they have X hours invested in their characters, and their friends and everyone else plays anyway. Not discounting Blizzard quality... but WoW's success is as much about perfect timing as it is quality, if not more so. - Derros

Yeah except this time there's a very valid point to this thread, since the fact is most people leave the event after the stage is done that they joined on.

If you then say in map chat that the event continues, usually almost everyone returns, which means they left because they didnt realize it continues.

Dont you think in this case it's alright to let them know that the thing actually is not over? It's kinda like they admit that they actually are doing it wrong by returning after you mention them that the event is still active ;)

Not to mention people who passes the candles entirely, they are the same people who whine about no variety etc, when they just simply walk past the variety. Dont you think that the basic quest hub mentality just might be the case here? Afterall, in q-hub games you dont light candles or get follow up stages unless they have '!' above their head. If there's no markers, you run past it, and go to forums to whine about no variety and simplicity of events.

It depends on what mood I'm in. Sometimes I stick around and enjoy myself watching Asura IQ-test some Skritt (that turn out to be smart) like today, sometimes I just rush through. But I do agree, if more people just stood around and look at what triggers a DE they wouldn't complain that much about everything being the same. If they know DEs work like this, then they're just ignorant when saying it ;) I hope some people will visit GW2 with another mindset now, as this is more of a friendly tip than a l2p thing.

what other MMO has event's that chain like GW2 without any sort of indication the chain is going to happen till it starts? in other MMOs events chain consistantly and you go from step to step when one ends another starts right away.. in GW2 you actually have to follow the npcs many times even if nothing is being displayed about an event or anything or you could miss out on the chains.

I think it's meant in the way of: Read the quests and learn the story or they all are boring and more of the same.

I understand some DE's are like this, but I've personally experienced many that aren't. Many are just escort, gather or whatever DE"s. Take the Genderren zone for example, or Kessix Hills. Both have events that happen almost like clockwork (predictable), and they're rather short.

Only partially true. In contrast with other MMO's in GW2, and this is what Galen in the YT vid was referring to, when you stick around longer after a DE has finished, you'll find out that the DE sequence isn't really finished, but that a next DE will be triggered by the ending of the former one, and another one after that. A chain of related DE's you might have missed if you just rushed off. Not always ofc, but it pays off to stick around a while longer after a DE has finished.

it is true not all DE's are branching or chain starting other events.. this can be an issue as people may see this and figure most are lke this then not stick around.. in my experience a good % do chain though so I find it's always worth at least following the npc's around

I love that about this game. The chain in the video was great. I had never seen it in sequence even though I had done all the steps in that chain at one time or another.

Having some sort of indicator that there is another chain in the DE would be useful IMO.

which for me makes the replayability so much better than most MMOs.. going through zones multiple times with differn't characters you run into events at differn't parts of the chains all the time.. makes the monotamy of repeating zones in other MMOs much less repetative in GW2 to me at least.

I agree with that. Have 'wasted' (not really wasted, but still) time standing around listening to weird NPC chatter. Although this might lead to farming again...

not a bad idea.. would surely keep people from wandering off.. guess they could keep the DE indicator going over the npcs head when he is going to chain into another event.. guess they wanted to make it more natural feeling I suppose.
