The only negtive things you can say about WoW's graphics are the low resolution textures, and low poly counts. Everything else: the animations, art direction, color palette, performance and responsiveness are superb. Unmatched, even. And that more than makes up for the textures and poly counts in my (and many other people's) opinion.

I think WoW is so popular because anyone can play it, as long as you have a computer and some kind of internet. This lets thier potential market HUGE. Most modern games fail in this aspect very very very bad. They limit thier potential market in order to get super nice graphics and such, but noone can play it unless you want to spend at least $500 at a pawn shop lol. You can go buy a $25, 5 year old computer and it'll run WoW (and will run it very well). Alot of players complain that Developers run thier games too much like a business, but in this aspect they make a big mistake. Sacrificing your potential market for state-of-the-art graphics really hinders the game's potential success.

Considering its graphics, is performance that good?
I mean blizzard held off making large scale pvp for a long time and I remember regular server crashes whenever a new raid or dungeon came out and people ran over to see it. |

I would be shocked if WoW did NOT have stellar performance after having 8 years to work on it. When it was released it was a mess. They were giving away subscription time it was so bad. Now....yes, it's great. Like I said, as it SHOULD be. President of The Marvelously Meowhead Fan Club |

Dont let the Trolls like Kade distract from your point. There stil is no other game with the polished feel of camera, character movement, combat, and character feedback of Wow. Love the game or hate the game is not even contestable.

Sigh, some of the posts here have been.... disappointing, clearly some poeple just read the title and trumped in without reading the OP.
I gotta agree with you, OP. There's a certain smooth crispyness to WoW that has yet to be beaten. It has nothing to do with FPS. When it first came out, my FPS was around 20, at the opening of AQ it went all the way down to 0.01, it was still so pleasant to play. I think it's the graphics engine and the extreme polish. To me WoW is the only MMO with true triple A polish. It's not clunky or unresponsive... it's just perfect. It just feels good to play, and that alone makes the game very awesome and hugely appealing.
Such a shame the game mechanics are so dull. |

For me the one thing WoW has done better than any MMO before it or since is the character control, every thing feels right, in sync, responsvie and characters feel like they have weight to them. GW2 come close but fails with jumping and floaty strifing but that's something to quickly become accustomed to. I am sure this alone is not what has kept it on top but for me I quit so many MMO's early on because they cannot get the controls right. Is it really so hard? |

Originally posted by shenfrey Uhm, Wow is incredible old now and there were complains late 2004/early 2005. Wows engine is well made, yes but the game does not look good anymore. The character models look very old. Of course that is only natural for a 8 year old game as well. But GW2 performs really close to how Wow did on launchdate, I am sure it will be as smooth as Wow 8 years from now. |

Originally posted by expresso I agree. The thing WoW does better, and IMO is why it is still the king, is responsive gameplay. Things like animation clipping are so important to making a game feel responsive. If I am done with an ability, then I am done. Don't force me to watch the rest. Addons like Quartz are also a nice help because you can see the ability lag and start the next. This may be taking advantage of an issue in WoW's system, but it's become such an integral part of gameplay, that I don't even think twice about it. I just picked up the game after almost two years, and it all just felt right again
Edit: I had another thought. Every MMO I've played other than WOW feels like I am fighting the controls in some way. It might be so minor that I am not even sure what it is, and I might not even think about it while playing. However, go back to WOW for one day and you'll feel it |

I think it is just one of many reasons.
Playing: Nothing atm My game concept thread: http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/369707 (any feedback appreciated) |

Aye, there is many reasons indeed. Lets see what happens in the future, only company that stands a chance with competing WoW is Blizzard themselves
