What do you think is the most dominate profession in 1v1? In my first week of playing, and focusing only on hot join SPvP, I think its Thieves, with Mesmers coming in second. Thieves have so many opportunities to reset fights, to escape, and to do a ridiculous amount of burst damage. They control the fight more then any other class and there is a reason why they are the FOTM. I think if any profession gets nerfed this early in the game, it will be Thieves. Mesmers are just a big mind-f*** and have so many confusing mechanics. Like the Thief, they have good escape mechanics while still doing a lot of damage. Their clones make me want to cry at times, specially amidst the chaos of battle. I run a Skirmishng and Wilderness Survival build on my ranger focusing on condition damage and I can pretty much take down any profession 1v1 with the exception of Thieves and Mesmers that know what they are doing. I've had some success against Thieves and Mesmers by snaring them after they open on me and blowing my cooldowns to burst them down. At which point they pop their defensive cooldowns and try to reset the fight. If I can stick on them long enough during this time, I can usually win just by keeping up my bleeds with my shortbow and chilling them with my axe. The problem is sticking on them when they try to reset the fight which is pretty difficult. |

I have to say Mesmers, but only if they build a specific way. Came across one the that could destroy my 2,000 toughness Ele, within 2 stuns and it's just so hard to keep a target lock on them. Heck, it's hard to keep a target lock on anything, as an Elementalist in GW2. This game needs a sticky targeting option.

Going to agree that thief takes 1v1 pvp right now, although I think mesmer is the king of sPvP.
Mesmer's clones have so many uses, from confusing your main target (the main purpose), blocking ranged damage, and the extremely annoying ability to keep the DPS on you while the mesmer stays untargetable behind cover (either ground cover or height advantage cover at the lip of the cliff by backing away while clones do damage). There's so much guesswork vs a mesmer, and when you finally catch the Mesmer in a bad spot, they will go invulnerable and may escape again, repeating the guessing game process.
Trying to finish a downed a mesmer when a group battle is taking place is also a nightmare (but not an issue 1v1), making me dread going for the finisher on a mesmer more than any other class in spvp.
Thief is just brutal damage for 1v1 that can't be matched, and the "autoseek" nature of heartseeker being such high damage and a distance closer at the same time is a questionable combination. Great evasion, great damage, great range - you're basically using every ability and cooldown you have to survive vs a thief in spvp if a thief has you as a target, opening you up as easy prey for any 2nd attacker in spvp. And you better hope that 2nd attacker isn't another thief.

I play thief. I always have trouble with mesmers. Their first attack on me takes away three quarters of my life, immobilizes/stuns me and not to mention that it is a ranged attack. |

Mesmer beats thief, I rarely lose to one now after I've had a bit of practice. There are other classes that beat Meser though.

Originally posted by TheHavok There is no PVP king. I killed some thieves, many run away with tail between their legs while I'm playing my Guardian. Why ? because I have great gap closer, right amount of blocking skills and cc while I still can cause quite a damage and apply few DoTs. Add to that right traits, heavy armor and quite nice amount of HP and you know what to expect right ? This is great in this game. Some builds can have advantage but will be adjusted (recent thief nerf) but overall you can always counter someone else build. |

Do more dodge for getting clones? Stealth, and wait for an opening to stun and use attacks..

Decided to take a break from my Ranger (i'll admit it - I got bored and felt like I experienced everything the class has to offer). Rolled a Mesmer and started dominating right away - barely knowing anything about the class. I was terrible those first few games - I would just pop cooldowns and hope shit would die. The sad part is it would work. Again, and again, and again. After an hour of playing, I was able to take on any class 1v1. I felt I always had control in a fight. I could make mistakes, multiple mistakes, and still survive or even get kills. I won maybe a handful of 2v1 situations on my ranger in over 200 games played. In 8 games played on my Mesmer, I have already won two 2v1 situations. Mesmers are far superior to Rangers, sadly. I like Rangers, I really do - but I'm not going to play a class and continue to be frustrated every day due to imbalances.

You can win 2v1s as a Ranger if you use traps. I use my epic evade build which gives me 3 evades not counting dodges. It's quite effective when people try to spike you. Only thing that has a high chance of killing me is a condition build.
This is not a game. |

There is a lot of rock, paper and scissors with builds in this game. My Mesmer is amazing, but can sometimes get stuck in a stalemate with anti-condition builds (mostly ele and guardian).
