According to this http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/post/5277723#5277723 post, we have permission to talk about gw2's xfire stats in this and only this forum. Let's do it!

 

This is GW2's xfire page: http://beta.xfire.com/games/gw2

Now, I was advised by the mod to compare it to other games but I think it's better(more reliable) to compare it with same days of the week (for example compare this sunday to last sunday etc)

GW2 seems to have reached an all time low yesterday, and is on the 3rd consecutive day with a drop in hours played.

Sunday: 93k hours played (the peak)  17% rise compared to last sunday.

Monday: 81k hours 11% rise compared to last monday (it was labor day though)

Tuesday: 73k hours (lowest since launch) 9.9% drop compared to las tuesday.

Wednsday 68.5k hours (lowest since launch)  18% drop compared to last wednsday.

 

Here is a comparison to other games: http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/post/5276024#5276024 As you can see they all recovered/stabilized from tuesday to wednsday, except GW2. 

 

Remember, xfire numbers is all we have to track GW2's population as mere mortals (aka non-Anet employees).

 

So the question is: Has GW2 peaked already after 8 days?

Xfire is meaningless as an absolute number, and only relevant as a comparison.

Most games dropped as school started, etc.

Drop pretty much expected. All the people that took time off from work to nerd through the first week are now back behind their desks/tools and pining.

So far nothing shocking.

I think the number of hours is less important than the number of players. GW2 had 14.1k Xfire players this wednesday compared to 13.7k players last wednesday. Still, it's way too soon to draw any conclusions, it's still honeymoon period. Also it'd be better to have other tracking info outside of Xfire, to see if they wildly diverge or not. If they diverge too much, then something isn't alright with the data to be useful.

filmoret: One thing I have never figured out is why the game devs hardly ever fix simple problems that arise. It is like they don't care about the pvp community.

Nitth: What makes you so sure its a simple fix?

filmoret: Because most of them are. Sometimes its just changing a number in a code string other times its creating a few variables. However none of them should take over a few hours of coding.

a) The game has ceased digital sales.

b) The game has been out for *8* days.

c) It's September, start of the UK school year and the weather here is "highly variable".

d) MMO populations are rhythmic, and generally form a wave - GW2 hasn't yet reached that point.

e) New MMOs are buggy and tend to have random downtime.

There are a billion variables to MMO populations, short-term the populations can fluctuate wildly, especially around release/patches etc. So you filter that out by looking for long-term trends...  it's rather difficult to spot a long-term trend with 2 points of reference...

There's a good argument that population may have already spiked, but there is no evidence on long-term population at this point.

WoW was an enigma with hardly any competition.

If you would have looked at wow's "hours played" on a day to day basis a week after release or any expantion pack... you would see the same fluctuation.

Everyone know's there's always that initial rush on MMO releases. I don't know where the numbers will go to but if you see how high GW2 currently is (3x + than WoW), having 2nd most hours played game of all with only League of Legends (a completely free 2 play game, and a very good one) in front of it... it woudln't be strange to drop really.

Maybe it will go up again in the next weeks. Have to wait and see.

I do still think the average hours played / xfire gamer is high... It's like above 5 hours? Damn i never have time to play that long, defenitly not on a week day.

I said recovered/stabilized. Only one game dropped as much as GW2 (SWTOR) and it is pretty much a dead game so I don't think GW2 wants to compare with it.

Yup, I don't know when the trolls will get a clue. Its NOT a subbed game. What's important is how many people bought the game. And how many people buy the expansions. That is GW2's pass or fail mark.

 

The game is doing well enough that its sold out atm.

It's sold out because Anet didn't beta test it (we are actually beta testing it right now). Also perhaps Anet saw the low retention rate and wants to fix some of the more serious problems (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Game_status_updates) before bringing new people in.

Umm the thread was about Xfire users and if THOSE users were still actively playing.

Anet stoppage of their sites digital sales has 0% bearing on the xfire numbers.

Also the title or i mean the question of asking if GW2 has reached it's peak would of course ONLY be related to Xfire players.So you would be asking if all players using Xfire have started to play less.

As for variables,people are 100% correct ,there are so many variables it is crazy,like school/weather/holidays all are huge factors.

There will ALWAYS be the FACT that without a true subscription,there will never be any indication of the games true value.XFire numbers will never show retention rate as there is no subscription to cancel.Simply playing less hours as months move along would be expected in any game and give no indication of a games value or worth.

What WOULD be interesting is if XFire gave each user a personal identity code and yo ucould see if those players are playing at all after 3 months.I don't mean playing less but ZERO hours,that would be the only indication of non retention.

This thread reeks of desperation.  Why don't you wait at least a few more weeks before "claiming" anything.  Not enough data.  Of course you are going to see a drop in play time hours on a weekday.

From my /age thread A LOT of people were playing an average of 10+ hours a day after release.  Of course that play style is not sustainable, as people are playing the shit out of it right now.  You will see a drop as people go back to their usual play style.

If anything, you should be using a baseline of GW2 playtime as of this week going forward.
