This isn't a pvp focused game. I had thought it was promote as a more pvp oriented game, but it isn't. The meaningful progression only happens in pve. So pvp is a side dish. For fun.

Ive just had to change my attitude.

On the contrary, it's one of the most pvp-centric games to be released in recent memory.  You'll have to define what you mean by pvp-centric.  What I mean (and most people I talk to/play with) by pvp-centric is a game which is developed with every aspect geared towards player vs player interactions.  What about this game do you feel takes away from pvp gameplay?  It got rid of the role trinity which has been a source of class imbalance for decades.  It has very limited CC compared to a lot of other games.  Combat is very active- dodging attacks actually dodges, line of sight breaks most projectiles.  There is instanced pvp which has glory points, glory levels, tournaments, etc.  You can buy cosmetic upgrades to customize the appearance of your character.  All characters have access to the same stuff.  The only variable in sPvP is player skill.

WvW is a different type of PvP (note that the game has 2 fully developed styles of pvp.  each of which are entirely self-sufficient).  While many players will engage in both, wvw features 4 large frontier zones littered with keeps, towers and supply depots.  This creates strategic opportunities for players to organize with allies and coordinate attacks, defenses, supply chokes, etc to change the possession of territory.

I'm not sure what you were looking for?  This game offers anything that simmilar MMORPGs offer today and then some.  You mention meaningful progression.  That's not a pvp thing, though.  Progress in pvp is you getting better.  You finally succeeded at taking down that one player.  You've finally figured out a good loadout for keep defense.  You finally understand how you and other classes can work together in different sized settings.

PvP is about getting better and learning more.  That's all there is.  Anything else a game puts in there is just a tail chase to make more people play that wouldn't otherwise be pvping.  If you want a game that lets you attack players while chasing virtual achievements like PvE, go play wow, play rift, play any other RPG out there that let's you try pvp type stuff while playing a pve game.  This rpg is hands down some of the best pvp you can find.  Go talk to MLG players about progression and they'll laugh at you.

Actually it seems you don't get guild wars.

I understand though, its a VERY hard concept to understand, playing something because you enjoy it.

PvP focused clearly means I need progression of gear to value my experience in it... Guess PvP and tiers go hand in hand, instead of competitive or balanced for anyone... But I suppose thats why WoW was such a great esport for PvP, since the tier system wasn't such a huge joke that they eventually dropped it... oops, did I go too far? my bad.

Do I need better gear to make it a PvP focused game, or do I need it to be competitive across the board? Hmmmm... tough question there...

IMHO, GW2 really isn't a pvp focused game. To be so, well, the development of content and feature and general desgin would have to be placed there. Like most mmorpgs, GW2 focuses on questing and leveling, instanced dungeons, etc.

However, while pvp may not be a main feature, it doesn't mean it sucks. Don't get me wrong, i don't care for meaningless e-sports pvp and WVW didn't blow me away for what i'd like for long term large scale pvp.

With that said, that doesn't mean GW2's pvp sucks or that not allowing the best progression path makes it horrible. While not fully impressed, i did find it good and quite enjoyable.

Also, i didn't test it in beta, but i think i've found some posts saying WVW actually grants more xp. If some can verify this, please do.

OP is right, sorry fanboys.

You need progression for your char  in the PvP, otherwise its just senceless. Even in the modern FPS you have some sort of progression.

Wow do it with Items, Daoc did it with Realm Points to unlock new skills.

This game is no sandbox, you dont lose items or territory , so pvp without a reason other then fun (or a creepy +X% exp bonus) gets soon boring. We want to evolve our character.

PVP still going in GW1.. that game came out when? most of the successful PVP games haven't had a power gear grind.. on side not there is plenty of reason to do WvW and sPVP just because it's nothing that interests yuo doesn't mean it's not there

I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. If I buy a candy bar at a store, oftentimes, I will drop it... so that it achieves its maximum flavor potential. --Mitch Hedberg

Progression as tiered armor...hhmmm. you see i am not sure how this equates to pvp progression. If people grind and grind and get beter tier gear than their opponents doesnt that devalue the cometitive progression? Take the competitive esport scene. Yes those games like sc2. Lol and cs all have progression within the match but no match is started with a lopsided advantage unless that advantage happens to a better player or player at the other end. I know more people who rage quit games because they get destroyed not because of skill but because of being hopelessly out tiered in gear. I am fine with gw2 having cosmetic upgrades as opposed to tiered pvp armor upgrades. As i am sure many are. Although. What i loved about vanilla wow pvp was the earnable pvp title that you had to earn and keep. The officer lounge and insignia was cool. Wish they would have kept that instead of go gear tier crazy.

Just to state a few things to the new generation of gamers that are posting here.

FPS games will never be about progression, that's a new thing that developers designed to the new generation that plays exclusively for the carrot on a stick, or for games that thrive from cash shops.

FPS are about easy, fast sessions where you are set on a mostly leveled playing field.

PvP gear progression in non-subscription games doesn't make any sense, it only promotes the spending of time, and that is why most MMOs had it, more time = more cash.

So just out of curiousity.  Where exactly in the OP did you see "progression of gear"?

In War - Victory.
In Peace - Vigilance.
In Death - Sacrifice.

GUILD WARS 2 WAS NEVER PROMOTED AS A PVP ORIENTED GAME!

FFS, I'm pretty sure ArenaNet didn't even show any PvP in the game till very late last year.

I love the game. Having a blast. I'm glad that it isn't so pvp oriented. I love the pve and the fun, casual pvp.
I expected something different, but what I got was even better. That's all I was saying.

SO what am I missing? Gw2 has PvP progression. You can level in WvW or you can level you "tier" in sPvP and get different gear the higher you go in sPvP. I am lost on how this point is completely overseen.

I'm getting sick of the condescension from these fanbois. It's really f-ing (I'd like to use the real word, but I don't want to get banned today) annoying. Please learn to respond to people without being an ass. Any good points you may have possibly made become invalid as soon as you are rude to someone for no good reason.

Good grief... grow up. Get out and about, you'll see there is much more to worry about then internet forums. The OP is dead wrong, along with anyone who says that there is no progression in GW2 PvP. I can prove them wrong within minutes by levelling my PvP rank. I'm sorry you have nothing to worry about except the internet. I come here on my free time and see blatant misleading posts to bash a game, so I join in for the hell of it.

Again, you, anyone else who believes that GW2 has no PvP progression is wrong. This is not an opinion, it is a fact. GW2 may be boring, repetitive, and out right crap for you, but you cannot change facts. Sorry you were wrong... it happens.

Edit: Also... a good point is a good point, doesn't matter how "condescending" the poster was. This is why they shouldn't let narrow minded people on the internet. If you feel you need ignore and disregard a true and correct post simply because of the poster, then by all means, ignore this post and forget about it. You wouldn't believe me if I told you the sun was hot anyways, I'm too condescending to make valid posts.

Um... FPS games only added much progression in the last couple of years. They were very popular, and a huge e-sport long before progression came into the picture. People played those game addictively, because they were fun and balanced with no progression allowing anyone new to kick the shit out of people whove been playing a long time as long a sthey had the skills to do it, not because they played longer / did more point grinding.

I used to work as an Admin and Ref for Gamebattles.com / Major League Gaming myself on top of being the founder and leader of the god clan for 3 1/2 years which held top ranks in several games, and myself had #1 & #2 ranks in games like R63, GR2, BF2, BHD, etc.We played because it was fun and exciting to compete against eachother, not because a game rewarded us with shiny new stuff.

I would love to have "more" PvP progression. Esp. in WvW where I planed to spend moste of my time. Maybe some Skills you can unlock or/and some armor.

GW2 is just a bit to generous. They give you every thing for free. (armor for sPvP) and all skills in the first 10 lvls. This takes away alot of the progression feeling I like. In moste other MMORPGS I was looking forward to see what the next lvl spell can do and how he looked like. This is somthing I'm missing in this game.

The PvE side looks quite good. Armor drops like candy =)Get allmoste the Diablo feel (not D3)
