Pretty much this. Plus you need max level if you hope to get karma fast to afford the very pricey exotic gear plateau. I can't wait to be 80. The game starts at 80! (oh, yes, I did!)

The trading post came up and I just couldn't stop crafting!  It took me straight to 80 (and actually leveled up 4 more times after that, gaining 4 skill points); I made a few gold in the process; AND I got to make all my own level 80 gear.  It was such a blast!  So don't tell me not to play and have fun the way I want.

The thing about GW2 is the whole game remains open to you even after you reach 80.  No game out there penalizes players less for "rushing" to max level than GW2.

I'd like to know how you are making money crafting, because so far for me, it's been a complete money sink!

There's not much of a secret really.  A million players were hoarding harvested materials for over a week, just waiting to toss them up on the TP, making supply is through the roof.  I'm sure you've noticed stuff like logs and ore selling for under 8c a piece.  This is significantly lower than during the betas and much lower than it will eventually be.  Even if you bought 100% of your wood, cloth and ore, you should have been able to break even by vendoring the gear you crafted.

I guess that is important point #1: because of the poor state of the current economy, blues and greens tend to vendor for much more than their salvaged materials are worth.  This applies to both items earned while out in the world and your crafted products.  Right now, you're better off just vendoring any piece that sells for more than 50c.  This will change eventually once the insane supply level of crafting mats lowers, but for now it's (unfortunately) the way to go.  You'll also notice many crafted products stupidly listed for 1c above their vendor sale price.  Whoever is silly enough to put those up actually makes less money than if they were to vendor them because of the TP listing fee and tax.

Anyway, if you're like me, the main limiting factor in proceeding with your craft (before the TP was up and after) was those fine materials used to make insignias/inscriptions.  There was simply no super reliable way to naturally obtain them without stopping in, say, a spider infested area and farming venom sacs.  Most people were obviously in the same boat as those materials are currently selling for much much more than the gatherable materials.

My workaround for this is I guess my 2nd tip: instead of buying extra fine materials to make the insignias/inscriptions you need, look to buy the actual insignias/inscriptions themselves.

After I completed my first tier of tailoring, I noticed I had leftover jute insignias that really weren't skilling me up efficiently anymore.  I checked to see if I could sell them on the TP when, to my amazement, I noticed a ton of them were already posted.  Then it hit me--thousands of players are new to this and are making the same mistake.  It turns out they continue to make that mistake in all the higher tiers as well.  They make more insignias/inscriptions than they needed and have leftovers that they toss up on the TP, always for much cheaper than the mats it takes to craft them.

Even so, I was sure to always put work orders in instead of just buying the cheapest available.  There was usually quite a large discrepancy.  I put work orders up for what I thought were absurdly cheap prices, thinking surely nobody would sell those 10s crafting components for mere 80c.  But they did!

Don't be afraid to put in a work order.  They will usually be fulfilled within seconds, especially at crafting level 250 and below.

All that said, it seems people are catching on (as is to be expected--also why I don't mind sharing with anyone and everyone.)  Those insignias/inscriptions are already becoming much more expensive than just earlier this morning.  It's just a natural learning process.

For reference, I got tailoring, artificing and cooking to over 375.  Cooking is mostly just karma materials.  I buy 2 or 3 bundles every time I complete a heart that sells them.

Edit: wow that post was much larger than anticipated.  Ok, back to the game!

Thank you! Cloth seems to be one of the exceptions to the rule on pricing. A lot of mats seem to be selling at the minimum, but cloth usually seems to go for 5 times that. The rest of the tips are very welcome. I've been maximizing discovery XP, which may also be why things have been such a money sink. I'll be more mindful for looking for insignias on the TP from now on. :)

BTW, yeah, I do buy orders almost all the time, which helps a lot.

If you play a lot on one character, you'll hit 80 before long.

It's not a matter of rushing.   Doing just about anything meaningful in this game gives you exp.

I got to 80 by doing a lot of WvWvW.  I wasn't obsessively escorting caravans or anything, just playing.

i logged about 50 hours on my guardian, enjoying DE's, personal story, spvp, tpvp and WvW. im only level 22 >.<  im enjoying every square foot of this beautiful world.

I actually hit level 80 but only have 38% of world completion done. I had a lot of time on my hands this past week, still got my irl workouts and eating in but, I don't start school till nxt semester and don't have a job [yet](agency pending).

Though hitting level 80 in this game just means you can now explore the entire world at your pace, I mean it's really is either way, due to hwo the world is set up, it isn't like there is one path you must follow and once you reach 80 you must stay there in order for the game to be relevant, I say that because of downscaling and level zones are scattered through out the gameworld, hell it's like a world, level 80s got much to see and explore depending on [how] they play.

I got so much ish to do still, I.E I am level 80 but still haven't seen all the zones and haven't even done story mode for most dungeons. I haven't craft yet, haven't done pvp yet, and not too much WvW.

Now the type of person I am, that's a good thing plus I'm an altaholic and in a guild, so being 80 doesn't mean all that much in this game, still gotta unlock all my skills, only have two trait lines unlocked, still figuring out what my fav playstyle for overall is.

Note: (My fav weapon sets so far is Sword + torch, scepter + torch, and greatsword)

So depens on what kind of player you are, because now that I hitt 80 I can do the same thing your doing just around the entire world, and the way you are playing is not bad either in no way shape or form ha ha.

Recap: Before I sort of rushed to 80, I thought about what would be left to do, so I really didn't try to start map completions until hitting level 80, only done 132-5 hearts out of 300. I'll be able to run map completion events with guild and etc.

Try to argue this please.

Oh also if you quote me and it's to argue my point, if I don't respond it means I haven't been corrected by you and/or I haven't seen it. Remember I don't mind admitting I am in the wrong. Take care :D

It's an MMO. People rush MMOs. The MMOs with depth are still fun after rushing, the ones without aren't. Are you new to the genre OP?

Even though I am on the low end (86+ hours and my main is lvl 40), this right here is a great reason to speed up my leveling. You ever been caught 1v1 on a WvW map and you have no chance of winning or running away? This probably is a higher leveled and gear person.  On top of that (in my case at least), they are probably better skilled at their class.

And what exactly are the people that are level 80 already "missing out" on?

People that are level 80 are not banned from playing with friends, socializing, having fun or enjoying the game.

Clear evidence of another hater. Stop hating the game so much man!

Seriously? Why the fuck is this thread still open?

1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

Did I try to level fast to 80? No. All I've been doing is going around and finishing zones for completion, farming nodes and crafting and then doing some WvWvW on the side. A total zone takes me about 5-6 hours if its decent sized, and that levels me about 7-8 levels. Then I got crafting. I gained over 20 levels from crafting alone. After finishing a zone and going back to craft I gained 3-4 levels everytime... So honestly it isn't hard to level and lose track of how many levels you got. Am I rushing? No... I'm just playing and enjoying the game... I don't get why it supposedly takes no life and playing 24/7 to hit 80. My current age is 92 hours... In retrospect about 70-80 it took me to level to 80... So honestly doesn't take that long. I didn't rush myself, I didn't buy mats on the AH just to power level. I was generally higher level than the zone I was leveling in because I kept gaining way too many levels per zone because leveling is stupidly easy... So honestly, it just happened, doesn't matter to me that it did, I get to experience everything now...

If you don't want to be more then zerg cannon fodder in WvW, you'll rush to 80 and max out to exotics ... or at the very least rares and have cash for good buffs and siege weapons.

This is why.

I haven't been playing much due to work but so far I am 48 with 41 hours in, so I guess I am speeding through the game but I have barely anytime to play.

You guys do realise that importance of having 80 level in this game equalls the importance of last year's snow?

Main MMO at the moment: Guild Wars 2
Waiting for: Pathfinder Online

Digging through posting histories is not worth my time, but I will bet that more than one of the people who have criticized players for "rushing to 80" have at one point also pointed out that "Level scaling means there's no endgame.  At level 80 you can go back to experience content you missed while leveling and it will still remain fun, challenging, and rewarding."

That exposes complaints about people rushing as not really being about people rushing but about trying to refute any negativity in a way that insults the poster making the negative comment.  Either that or they've come to realize that level scaling is not really as effective as it was hyped up to be.

Like you, people really should be pointing out that level 80s can now go back and experience everything they've skipped and it will still be just as engaging, but I guess it's easier and more fun to try to embarrass them in a community that will always take one's back.

I have a question for you. What does it matter what they do? They're enjoying the game their way. I know as I'm powering through a game, my goal is to get to max level so that I can make more gold and items to enjoy my playtime more. Everyone plays an mmo differently, there's no right or wrong way to do it. They're having fun just as you are, so why does it bother you, and why is your way the only and best way to play? Seriously, I wonder why.

What happens when you log off your characters????.....

i got 24lvl only in Plains of Ashford, and yet i havent seen all the DEs at that map, and just before i leave that place, a friend told me that at the hidden jumping puzzle there was more depth ..! and i get back to finish it ..!

hell no i dont wanna know how much content they lost..! the only acceptable reason is the WvW or the fans of the personal story ...
