Anet just threw in the optional grind for those who are willing to invest time on those rares armors.

Thats not entirely true.  Gear still gives an advantage, so it is in one's interest to grind for them.

Advantage you get from it is minimal, not required to be competitive.

Last time I remember, ArenaNet said you would get a reward each run to prevent this kind of grind.

Words cannot describe how dissappointed I am, waited 4 years for it and again it's just another grind if I want to build unique characters.

Anyone else feels the same?

Fixed.

To obtain one set of the COSMETIC dungeon sets, you need to run explorable mode 60+ times. You can simply craft of buy with Karma the best gear in the game. Some how I'm getting the feeling that a person that waits four years for something but has no idea of how it works is used to being dissapointed.

An advantage is just that, so even when being competitive there's a purpose to having them.   People generally don't want to be second rate.  It's one of the reasons they actually get on the gear grind, and why it's used in every mmo.

Is the bank big enough to hold all those equipment sets?

Cash Shop to the rescue!

Not neccesarily. Yesterday I exchanged silver for gems, 10 silver have 33 gems. I am level 30 now and I been blowing off a lot of money, anyone at 80 must be able to fill all the bankslots in a few hours tops.

But yes, if you want all armorsets in the game at the bank you need to upgrade it and you need to spend a long time grinding but that is hardly surprising, thry to get all armorsets in Wow...

But buying stuff for real money is a noob thing.

I'll explain my cash shop experience so far. I don't even call it a cash shop, it's the ingame gold shop. Here is a list of everything I have bought from the ingame gold shop so far:

  • Deluxe Edition Upgrade (2000 gems)
  • 4 Bank Upgrades (600 x 4 = 2400 gems)
  • 2 Bag Slots (400 x 2 = 800 gems)
That's 5200 gems.

I have not bought any gems with real money, earned all the gold myself (only a little trading involved when the trade post was working) and my total hours played is about 120 hours.

Cash shop comments are void. 100% void. I have proved it.

Im level 50 atm. Just how did you get all this gold?

I am level 78 and would like to know how the hell he got so much gold to trade for gems, last I checked 1g would give you ~280 gems, so this guy farmed on his own around 18g. Those are some impressive skills if that is true, also considering I have only managed to hit the trading post online for about 1h total, I dont know how you have done, tbf I find it a bit hard to believe, unless you have played non stop, havent used ANY materials for crafting and just sold everything including gear and not bought any of the skill books or used any teleporting, 18g is a bit farfetched.

Gear is not just cosmetic, and that's the "issue".  Personally I don't find it an issue, but it is kind of against ANets claims.

But there is a HUGE difference in beeing mandatory or just optional.

In other MMOS like WoW for example you NEED that gear to progress.

Not in GW2. as i said (4 times already) it is just OPTIONAL.

When it comes to egos things generally stop being optional.   It takes a lot of will power to hold off fom wanting to be and have the best.   Developers know this, so just because it's seems optional doesn't mean in practise it won't become the norm to grind for them.

Yes they are optional to a degree, but so is a child eating candy.  Wave it in front of them, and unless one is cruel it's no longer an option.

By your logic, there is no gear grind in WoW because well, raiding is optional after all, you dont need to raid you can just do daily quests and pvp if you like.

Yes it is. The gear he's talking about is simply cosmetic. You can craft gear with the exact same stats, buy it with Karma or get lucky using the Forge. Show me a peice that has better stats that I can't obtain from either of the three mentioned ways and I'll be happy to adjust my statement.

This thread isn't just about the cosmetic items.  There are ones you need to grind for, which do provide better stats.

My stance would be "so what? One more thing to do".

...why don't you guys level up crafting and make the sets yourself?

OK, give me an example. That's what I asked for in my last responce. Give me an example of one of those pieces. Maybe you know something I don't.

But that will mean you miss A LOT of content....specially all the storyline.

In GW2 you can experience the WHOLE game without needing that gear grind.

sense the difference?

See the Catch 22?

No because that's not what is being said.  The 2nd line that comes closer to the complaint is:

"I'm level 80 and there's too much repetition of what I've already done many, many times to get what I want"

I'm only 16 on my highest so it isn't and won't be an issue for me for a long time.  And it may never be an issue because of the fact it isn't needed -- I'm not that into looks.  But it is an issue for others obviously.  They want those carrots but they find the path too unappealing.

It doesn't have to be all/nothing as some over-simplify it to (everything now, for no effort).  By "overtuned" I don't thing they meant the dungeon being too hard but the #runs could be too many still.  Doesn't mean they have to take it down to 1 run per piece but it could be 10% less or 25% or whatever the sweet spot would be for more people to feel the work is worth the reward.

But every game I've played has issues.  While the balance is in favor of you having more fun than not you keep playing.  When it tips the other way you move on.  Sorry for those who hit that point so fast but it seems this really wasn't the game for you.  But it's a great game for me and I'll get as many months out of this as I did out of every MMO since my first.  Probably more than a lot of them (Hz, AC2, ...)

PLEASE read carefully everyone: http://www.guildwars2junkies.com/2012/08/23/guide-weapon-and-armor-stats-explained/

Also when it comes to possibilities:

Where do I get the gear from?

  • Common = Mob Drops, Chest Rewards, Merchants
  • Fine = Mob Drops, Chest Rewards, Karma Merchants, Crafting, Mystic Forge
  • Masterwork = Mob Drops, Chest Rewards, Karma Merchants, Crafting, Mystic Forge
  • Rare = Mob Drops, Chest Rewards, Karma Merchants, Cultural Vendor Merchants, Crafting, Mystic Forge, Dungeon Token Rewards
  • Exotic = Mystic Forge, Dungeon Token Rewards, WvW Merchants, Crafting
  • Legendary = Mystic Forge

If we want a full set of level 80 exotic gear we would need to run:
1800/41 = 43.9
= 44 Dungeon runs

For a 2 handed weapon we would need to run:
390/41 = 9.5
= 10 runs

For a main and off hand we would need to run:
510/41
= 12.4
= 13 runs

Higher level dungeons will have multiple explorable modes and Arah (L80/ final dungeon) has 6 paths. This will make repeating dungeons MUCH less monotonous.

There are also infos about the gear through WvsWvsW and through crafting.

Lots of infos there and a good read to say the least!

By your logic, there is no gear grind in WoW because well, raiding is optional after all, you dont need to raid you can just do daily quests and pvp if you like.

But that will mean you miss A LOT of content....specially all the storyline.

In GW2 you can experience the WHOLE game without needing that gear grind.

sense the difference?

You can't experience the whole game if you didnt finish those dungeons, and if you dont actually have your character looking kickass like it is suppose to with those sets. You just missed A LOT of GW2 content by not getting that gear, that looks kickass.

Your comment about missing A LOT of content in WoW is also BS, the bulk of the story line is actually done through quests you can finish on your own, and the dungeons only provide the fights, and after people have beaten the content you can go look at the cinematic which is the ending of the story line. Ill give you an example, cataclysm and wrath, if you done every single relevant quest before entering ANY Raid dungeon and just clicked on the statue in the middle of dalaran and the scale fragment in Stormwind you have experienced 95% of the content of the xpac, the fighting the bosses is totally optional. To the same extent the cosmetic gear is.

I could also not care about the story and just care about how I look at which point I have missed A LOT of GW2 content relevant to me, the same way some people will only PVP and that will be the content they care about.

It's not really a grind though is it. Because you are not FORCED to do it.

You don't need to do it to be competative in pvp.
They aren't using the tired old tiered pve progression model of eq/wow, so you don't have to panic grind this stuff to stay "on the curve" or you will have trouble grouping for future content.
