As the title says.

What did GW2 Truly Innovate for this game? You cant say DE because Rift has those.... so what is it that GW2 has that no other game has?

I guess its just as I thought then, GW2 didnt actually innovate anything, they just re-wrapped every feature from existing games that they found nice.

GW2 improved on existing features found in different mmos -- and brought it into the same game but better

example:

autoscaling your level within the entire gameworld

past mmos only allowed for this in some situations -- but not all the time

most mmos borrow tho, WOW had nothing that didnt already exist in past games

Forced level scaling? I don't think I've played an MMORPG with a system in place where the charater is leveled to the content. I think it works really well in this case.

Umm... it took PQs and bumped them up a notch (or three). I think that they improved on an already interesting concept for MMORPGs. I don't know if this is an innovation, but it's definitely an improvement over what we've seen before in my opinion.

I don't think I've ever seen a WvW system that is like theirs. Not that it's 3 faction PvP, but that the servers get ranked against each other and change every 2 weeks to promote balanced/difficult matches.

Hmm, what about guesting on servers? I suppose TSW has a similar system in place from what I read. But both games basically innovated that at the same time.

Maybe... the cross server auction house? I think TSW has this too. Both games made it happen around the same time.

I don't know, maybe there are other things. Those are the main things I can think of off hand. Innovation is kind of a terrible word to use since everyone seems to have their emotions attached to it for some reason. But there are definitely things in GW2 that would follow the strict definition of the word in my opinion.

Innovation is the creation of better or more effective products, processes, services, technologies, or ideas that are readily available to markets, governments, and society. Innovation differs from invention in that innovation refers to the use of a better and, as a result, novel idea or method, whereas invention refers more directly to the creation of the idea or method itself.

While im sure many people will reason as to what GW2 changed or improved, it's just dancing around the question...in answer to the question, it has no true innovation whatsoever.

Everything in GW2 has been done before in one guise or another.

in my book Anet brought up a beautiful gfx and artwork combined with honest 3 "faction" pvp serverwide and arena pvp  e-sports-like, expanded a well existing lore, did hide really well the "quest" grind, game itself is not easy in the later lvls, gave you a real reason why to group with others, everything (even spitting) gives you exp, downscaling of char stats when visiting low lvl content (so it's not faceroll and you still enjoy to play with your low lvl friends) and last but not least  NO F....G MONTHLY FEE.

But yes, that's just in my book   xD

so stating these thingies  I guess for your "innovation" I can reply with : AAA mmo combined with NO F....G MONTHLY FEES !

downsides ? yes: really light story (nothing compared to TSW which has storytelling as main core) but that's it.

I am a fanboy ? no. Tbh 1 month ago I even requested a refund and finished to rebuy it again...

Well, is there anything new left in the MMO genre to introduce at this point? Because I can't really think of any.

It definitely innovated fun for me.   I'm  playing this now as furiously as I played Everquest when it came out in 1999.   First game since then I've played that much.

I don't know about any particular major feature it has that is truly new but the complete package is fantastic.    It takes main selling points of other games and just has them as "here's one of the things you can do".   With any major release I've played there's been something I really liked about it, but I found that I was just doing that and the rest of the game was weak to me.

GW2 seems like it picked up those things and each component is something that would be just "good" standalone.   But you can cycle between everything with ease to where you just don't get bored.    Like exploring?  You've got more of that than you can handle any time soon.   Getting bored with exploring for the moment?   You've probably been hitting some DEs while doing so so that helps.   Not running into many DEs right now?   Drop over to WvWvW and play with everyone there for a bit.   Getting tired of running around with the zerg in WvWvW?   You've been picking up quite a few mats, go craft some stuff.   Used up all your mats for now?  (No trading post atm but normally you'd be able to just buy more of course), how bout some sPVP?  Maybe grab a few glory ranks.   Done some sPVP matches and ready for something else?  Hit up a dungeon group or two, those are starting to get rolling now.

Of course somewhere along the way while doing that, you'll find you want to go back and explore some more, or do more WvWvW or whatever, so you can do so.   You never really feel like there's a particular thing that you need to be doing, everything feels good and worthwhile, and that's a great feeling.

It's a truly complete gaming experience.

There is plenty of innovation, but it is still trapped inside the MMORPG genre, so there is only so much they can do really.

Apart from that I guess they are limited by the technology available to us at the time. We can't comprehend what games will be like in 10 years time since the technology for it isn't available yet and we haven't seen it, but consider the jump from tetris to guild wars 2.

Nadia, I never said to compair this game to WoW. Ever.

Second, Leveling the content in a game to the character has been in since TES:Oblivion and Id venture to say even games before that.

ColdDog - Never said the system had to be in an MMORPG, just any game, which forced level scaling has been in. (Oblivion, Skyrim)

WvW has been implemented on WO but it was called RvR - and No, adding one more W does not make it an innovation, it makes it a re-packaged feature that another game had to innovate.

Ill take a shot in the dark.  First you can't post a "Thats right I told you so" 5 minutes after you posted.  Give the thread a little longer for responses jeez.

Heres what I think it did new.  Allows you to be useful in PVP right from the start.  Going to level 80 with full gear and weapons/skills right into PVP without having to grind something I havent seen before. (Someone might correct me).

Getting experience for rezing people.  This so far has made rezing people something that EVERONE does in this game.  Even when your wiping it feels like teamwork.

The Vistas, allowing you to see the point of view the developers had in mind when they created the amazing landscape.  The Vistas make me see parts of the game that I didnt even know where there.

Making finding places a puzzle, hacing to have timing skills while jumping from rock to rock.

The multiple story quest.  I am not talking about a quest for each class like in SWG, I mean being able to play your characters multiple ways and still see something different every time.

Then well to top it off, it pretty much takes everything from other MMO's and does most of them better.

Thats irrelevant, it's not the point, nor the question asked.

I never said this was a bad thing, nor anything new, i simply answered the question others want to skip around instead of answering.

filmoret: One thing I have never figured out is why the game devs hardly ever fix simple problems that arise. It is like they don't care about the pvp community.

Nitth: What makes you so sure its a simple fix?

filmoret: Because most of them are. Sometimes its just changing a number in a code string other times its creating a few variables. However none of them should take over a few hours of coding.

Honest answer - GW2 took a bunch of features from different games, improved upon those features and put them all together in a nice polished package...with no sub fee.  WoW did the same thing back in the day.
