... to describe a goddam computer game. It's derisory. It's JUVENILE. THIS is hardcore:- "Covered in mud, five hours after starting, triple amputee Corporal Todd Love charges to the finish line after competing over ten miles of rugged terrain across 75 obstacles in an event called The Beast. Having lost both his legs and an arm in Afghanistan in 2010, this weekend Love took to Leesburg, Virginia, in an extreme endurance test called The Spartan Race with his eight-man other comrades of Team X.T.R.E.M.E. Made up of wounded servicemen and women, the team helped Love scale eight-foot high walls, speed along high-wires, crawl through mud and bound across the ground as they honoured their ongoing mission to raise awareness of the nation's wounded heroes. Purposefully wearing a gasmask and visor to restrict his breathing by up to 30-percent - thereby making it more difficult to complete the event - Love who now weighs only 100-pounds after stepping on a landmine - struggled against huge odds to compete the event." The article I read also mentioned that Cpl. Love has participated in skydiving and surfing in Hawaii and even wrestled a 400-pound alligator in Florida. Goddam!! An alligator! With three limbs missing, this guy wears a mask to restrict his breathing to make the event more difficult. THAT my friends, is an example of actual hardcore, not someone slumped at a keyboard playing a computer game. I know this post will get deleted, since it's not really game-related, but although I'm an Englishman my admiration for this American man knows no bounds. |

Grats to him. I applaud him. That is awesome. But...
One form of hardcore does not negate another. Every activity has a "hardcore mode".
I'm not a hardcore goat farmer, but someday I hope to be.

Originally posted by Dibdabs hmmm, last I heard, we were allies, we sometimes go to the same parties, visit each other's countries, take photos, etc. At least that's how it works in the US office of the UK company I work in... As far as "hardcore'; did it occur to you that the word might be suitable in different ways to different situations? That within the parameters of one genre/discipline there can be gradations of casual to hardcore that can be easily recognized?

So we drop it for video games, but it's still ok for porn, right? I mean... there are lines that shouldn't be crossed.. and i don't mean battlelines across which someone may or may not be crawling with a rifle in their teeth as we speak...ehm.. not sure where i'm going with this, but it can't be good. I'll stop now.

Originally posted by Dibdabs Completely agree, but most MMO players put the stereotype "nerd" to play to every damn letter. They will have no idea of what the "hardcore" you are mentioning means. Sitting infront of a computer, getting fat, eating cheetos is not hardcore but to some it will always be; especially when they die from obesity due to the fat their chest suffocating and crashing their ribcage. |

It reminds me how on curse.com they advertise mods that are "hardcore arena mods" that are mod packages/bundles that can almost guarantee you a 1800 rating because they tell you everything about your opponents and the like.
Ever since then anyone who's claimed to be "hardcore" in WoW has gotten at least a chuckle out of me, remembering the curse addons lol. :) |

I'll never stop saying Hardcore now, and only because YOU have a personal issue with it.

"Covered in alpine flower petals, SIX hours after starting, Mr Pebbles (all limbs attached) skips light-heartedly towards the Everyone-Is-a-Winner Line to the accompaniment of the Sound of Music.
"Having lost two of his front baby teeth and a quarter just last week, Little "Whistling" Peter Pebbles frolics in his front yard before crossing the street to watch the latest episode of Hoppy the Happy Frog with his best friend Sally Freckles (all llimbs attched)."
"Purposefully wearing both a Tebow Loves You t-shirt along with a green Jet's cap -to restrict his team's chances of winning by up to 80% -and thereby freeing Mr Pebbles up to not watch football on Sundays, Mr Pebbles places his six week old kitten (see photo below) in the wicker basket of his Schwinn bicyle and bikes them over to the St. Mary of the Tender Heart Hospital to cheer up one Alivin Friendly (missing his tonsils)."
I know this post will never get deleted, 'cause I posted a picture of the cuutest widdle kitten evah (all limbs attached) (I think) !!! |

Its a word with different meanings when applied to different scenarios.
Hardcore doesnt mean the same thing when its applied to drug addicts, an amputee wearing a gasmask on an obstical course, or the difficulty level of a game. When a game is called hardcore, its in reference to other games. When a player considers himself hardcore its a measurement of his "devotion" to the game in both time and effort. Only then possibly you could compare it to an amputee obsitcal course when using hardcore to describe devotion. Yes, sadly there are many people as devoted to mmorpgs as that guy completing the course...now if only that devotion was applied to something productive.... |
