Only in death, does duty end.

OP  8/31/12 3:28:57 AM#1

When I started, I chosed a Guardian. My friend is a Warrior so  I would find it boring to be the same class.

This game is not about tank/dps/healer, but I did fear that Guardian would be quite bad in damaging/surviving in PvP.

I am level 35 now, and it feels like I give insane amount of damage with my 2 hander, while I can last long (spent all my traist in tough/health.)

Is this bugged or something? I mean he deals insane damage and heals quite well. But should he actually be to do this? Or can we expect a nerf?

Only sad thing about Guardian wit ha greatsword, is number 2 on the action bar is a bit boring. Make a ring that deals damage if they are inside it, though it retaliates (and make you stand still).

Retaliation, however, is pretty evil ^^

But if the Guardian is actually allmost like the warrior regarding HP and damage if specced right, whats the real difference between them?

Mostly just arsenal of weapon choice and the abilities are more defensive as a guardian?

Any tried Guardian with staff? Is he awesome as a caster?

Well, I've only gotten up to about level 10 on my guardian, but I really like the class.  I've mastered all the land weapons as well.  The staff is awesome, but so is the greatsword.  Hard to pick which one I like more.  The greatsword seems to be more effective at dealing damage.

I don't think being tough and able to deal damage is a bad thing for the Guardian or the Warrior.  They are primarily classes that fight close and so they have to be tougher because they're taking more damage.

I started out with a guardian, got him to lvl 16, then decided i wanted a warrior.  I might go back to my guardian later though, since they are pretty fun.

As I understand - Guardian brings much more group support - but he lack in ranged damage capability.

Warrior has insane damage and just as good survivability. But more solo oriented. And bit less fun due to being completely straight forward.

In sPVP Guardians are exactly what the OP states, they have good damage and insane survivability, it is not uncommon to see 2 guardians just run to your base at the start with 5 people not being able to stop them, I hope they do tweak the numbers on it, cause at the moment its a bit much in my opinion.

in between the stress tests, i saw some changes to Guardian, mainly increasing damage while decreasing healing strength / boon duration. The idea behind it  seemed to be to pull guardian out of the tank/support role, and make him more all-round. As he was before, it was pretty much leaning into trinity, which was very much against the whole idea of the game. If he's really that tough and damaging at once, something seems to have gone wrong in the rebalancing, and another pass should be around the corner.

It seems to be a difficult class to balance for ANet, since the whole idea of a guardian, and maybe even more the idea of what players expect a guardian to do, doesn't match well with what the game tries to do. Push up the damage dealt, and it will be too much like playing a warrior. Reduce damage and up survivability and we've got a tank/healer. Back to trinity. Tricky indeed.

I just looked at skills:

http://www.gw2builds.org/create/bwe_1/guardian

http://www.gw2builds.org/create/bwe_1/warrior

Both has:

  • Support abilities
  • Healing abilities
  • Damage abilities
Both their greatswords has:

  • Slash multiple foes
  • AoE spin
  • Charge enemy
  • Throw sword at enemy and bring back
What I really think the difference is, cutten down, is that Warrior can use all types of weapons except staves and other magic stuff, while Guardian are limited with melee weapons but can use staves and magic.

So, I think it all comes down to

"Pure physical, or also caster".

If I spec pure toughness and vitality with my guardian, I can still crush my enemies and have a good healthpool where I get nice amount of healing, where the warrior can make great damage if he puts his trait points into that.

So I guess it just comes back to caster or physical.

If one tries to build what would normally be a trinity class, one becomes quite overpowered.  Same happens with a warrior, when specing and gearing towards defence.  Heath regen and mitigation is really high, to the point where you can just stand there having a few equal level mobs beating on you, and your health bar hardly moves before regen'ing.  I suspect it's a balancing issue, and is pretty much unstoppable in pvp, being able to take on a few players by one self.

As for the difference between the two classes.  Guardian has stronger heals, and offers more mitigation to a group through support mechanics.  A warrior is more straight dps, with tanking like mechanics.

But if you mainly want to just damage and rage with Guardian without being one shottted, it is still possible right?

as in all should be able to do the same role.

Yeah they can also dps.

Not 100% sure, but believe they are however weak when it comes to range dps.

As the Warrior and Guardian are the two classes I've had the most interest in I've been playing them both off and on from BWE1 through today.  My experience has shown that if all you really want your heavy armor class toon to do it DPS a warrior is generally better in that department thanks to their class specific mechanic that allows for STRONG burst attacks the Guardian just can't duplicate.  Warriors also appear to have much better ranged options that overall seem to be more effective (direct damage or condition based, single target or AoE, longer overall range) when compared to what the Guardian can choose from.  HOWEVER the exact opposite is true for a Guardian.  Their class mechanics allow them to sustain quite a bit more damage not only personally but for the entire group, which can be a Godsend in the right situations.  Not to mention all the additional summons you can pull out as a guardian to help augment your normal weapon DPS.  Some might complain about the HP difference but the reality is the Guardian has quite a few ways to negate all incoming damage completely which pretty much null/voids that arguement.

In the end I would suggest you decide with class mechanic you like the best and roll that toon.  Ultimately that is what really seperates all the classes in this game and is intended to be as such (no true trinity means all classes must be able to preform all roles equally, just different in their approach).  This is my dilemma as well because I still can't choose which to main.

You can also go scepter + offhand for midranged ranged damage, and it works pretty well (better, I think, for pure damage than the staff does -- the staff is more defensive).

I enjoy Guardian. I use all my own spells mainly as buffs (retaliation is what I prefer atm).

I specced toughness and vitality with my traist, and use everything to retaliate.

I am a warrior so far I am liking it I believe while using heavy armor and then using a longbow with a rifle and a greatsword as bakup warriors can be insane so far I am loving it, I will try the guardian on the future. The Healing is not that great. I think if I am right the Warrior is more of a [Damage Per Second] or DPS then the Guardian the Guardian is more of a True Tank if I am right and has the heals I think it has, this reminds me of Aion the Gladiator was DPS With Poloarm and The Templer was a True Tank With Sword and Shield. Both classes use the Greatsword just like in Guild Wars 2.

The best way to travel is by means of imagination.

8/31/12 4:19:33 AM#17

Everyone can do both ranged and melee. Everyone can be damage or support. Guardians have a lot of things that enable them to last a long time. Maces can heal passively, and many skills heal as a component. The healing boosts are a function of the class. But no, what you are describing is not unusual. Played well, any class can totally decimate and survive.

As an aside, a guardian is my main, and a thing I noticed in your traits is an ability that allows greatsword attacks to passively heal you. As you seem like the greatsword as much as I do, that might interest you.

"There are two great powers, and they've been fighting since time began. Every advance in human life, every scrap of knowledge and wisdom and decency we have has been torn by one side from the teeth of the other. Every little increase in human freedom has been fought over ferociously between those who want us to know more and be wiser and stronger, and those who want us to obey and be humble and submit."

But Anet do not want the DPS/healer/tank roles.
