Those who ask a question, are stupid for 30 seconds. Those who never ask, are stupid for life. |
So, I got past the tutorial and hit level 17. Before I just spammed one button and killed everything. But doing that after the tutorial, I couldn't kill anything. Now, I never played Tera...which I heard has awesome combat. However, out of the MMOs I have played...I never been so involved.
In WoW, I literally always fell asleep during combat, because the animations were so slow and plain. In GW2, combat animations are really fast.
On top of that...I have to dodge, manage cooldowns...in fact...I totally forgot that there was no mana at all. It is so active. And I love the fact I can dodge, instead of having heat seaking arrows/spells coming toward you. And like I said, if I just spam one key...I just end up dead.
So, after playing further after I made my previous thread that combat was dumbed down...I take that back. The most enjoyable combat I've played in a MMO.
Current MMOs: Defiance, Guild Wars 2, TERA, SWTOR |

I like GW 2's combat, it is multifaceted and challenging, however I feel TERA's aimbased combat is better. GW 2 seems to be a more complete game though, so far anyway.

Some enemies are insanely hard or insanely easy, all based on whether you dodge at the right time. Good fun.

*stands up applauding with tears streaming down cheeks* BRAVOOOO! Someone who had a change of opinion. This almost never happens! Seriously...most people hate something and will blindly and ignorantly hate it forever without ever trying it or opening their eyes to look at it for what it is. I, for one, commend you. |

I'm only 11 so I can't really say what it's like later, but I used all my skills as they are pretty much all better than auto attack, and I'm not finding it particularly fun. Every fight seems to be painfully difficult, an outright gangbang (during DEs when other players run away), or so easy it doesn't matter what you do. There's a sweet spot that the game, at this point, seems to miss entirely. Hopefully it gets better.

You mean... you admit you were wrong? On the Internet? On MMORPG.com?! You MUST be doing something evil here. In all seriousness, combat was really tough from the get-go during the first beta weekend. Then they made the first few levels easy enough to serve as a tutorial. I don't like it, but I understand why it had to be done. |

Can you tell me - in your experience - what what the most difficult encounter you defeated, what made it challenging, in what ways did you have to coordinate with others to defeat it and how many times did your group fail before you finally managed to get it down? Originally posted by adam_nox It gets better. The giant zone PQs (The Swamp Slumbers for instance) require a decent amount of corrdination to pull off correctly. But it could also be your class (I'm a necro) were it'll be easy for awhile due to how you made your build :/

Good deal! Glad you came to enjoy it. And major kudos to you for coming here and updating your thoughts. I agree, GW2 combat is a LOT of fun. It's active and interactive, and it's fast and furious.

Originally posted by Yamota TERA is like making a burger with a stale bun, low grade meat thats over cooked, and no cheese and putting bacon on top of it. Yeah, bacon is awesome but its still a shitty burger. At least from a PvE perspective i find GW2 combat more engaging because of the weapon swapping and much greater situational focus. |

I like GW2's combat a lot. Don't know if I'd say it's the best I've played, Tera was better in some ways, Rift was better in some ways, even Aion and AoC were right up there. GW2 is definitely one of the best, though.
What GW2 has over all those games is that it's so well rounded and polished. It's one of the best MMOs, in almost every way, while these others have glaring flaws that brought them down, despite their strengths. When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world. |

Originally posted by TheScavenger I commend you for your post - agree/disagree doesn't matter. The best part of this post to me is that you found something you are really enjoying - it would be nice if all of us could find that in a game! |

Originally posted by arieste I am unsure if this will change your mind, or is it different for other Classes. But from my experience, during your Personal Story for a Warrior Charr you will be challenged to fight against an Veteran NPC. For those that knows, Veteran NPC is harder than normal Mobs. Althought you will have an NPC with you, you will be alone in the fight. I came out ontop, almost died a few times, but with kiting, switching weapons, CC, and overall luck. I was able to win. Because you get scaled to the level of the encounter it will always be hard regardless of when you do the fight. So I was very impressed and surprised that Personal Story was Hard. And that was fun. Life is a Maze, so make sure you bring your GPS incase you get lost in it. |

TERA's combat felt better with melee as you had full collision detention, and the aim system made it easier to focus your view than in GW2, but the skills are more fun and the down system and rez system is better in GW2. As for difficulty, in GW2 I went out of my way to take on mobs 2 lvls higher than me, and the challenge was great, one wrong timed dodge and I was dead, GW2 will always feel harder than most WoW style mmos due to the scale system, but it needs to be, easy PVE along with the terrible tab target, hot bar combat that everyone uses never gets interesting once you get bored of the routine. |

Can acting in a mature and reasonable manner in a crowd of trolls, haters and fanbous considered trolling? ;) And it sounds like tey took a page from Asherons Call as far as dodging incoming spells. Glad to hear that its going to be as helpful here as it was/ is there. Also encouraging to hear someone stating that the combat gets harder and ability spamming becomes less/unviable after the starter zones. |
