Ahaa. This thread is priceless.
Basically what we have here is lots of people walking into a room with loads of empty chairs in, trying to claim there's no where to sit.

To each their own, but it s how I feel, and to me, I just feel like I m going through the motions. We ll see if it gets better, but if I spent 60.00 and play PS2 beta, more on headstart/release, it s obvious, GW2 is a game I don t feel is that good. |

GW2 is different, people wanted different, they got it. I don't understand why people look for content in MMOs in PvE. They will never get one. If you want PvE content run Dragon Age or Skyrim. If you really want to have fun in GW2 play PvP, and play PvE, WvW as something to relax abit, that's it. I bought GW2, I bought it for PvP only, I might never even finish the PvE tbh... I don't care about it at all... If you care about PvE in MMOs you're gonna have a bad time. And times when we were grinding our asses of in Lineage2 and zerging eachother are over. It was quite fun but it's about time it ended. |

Just so you know the population is starting to spread out so the zerging is pretty much solving itself like everyone knew it would. Have you even played another mmo on headstart / launch day? They all are zergfests but with the added bonus of kill stealing and asshattery. At least GW2 minimizes that. Also, the goals in game are actually what you want to set for yourself. At the moment my main goal is to become guild cook and dye creator. Cooking in this game is very, very indepth with the assloads of ingredients I have to organize and logically need to put together to create recipes. I want to be one of the top cooks and be able to sell my food to many people that will benefit from it. It reminds me of when I was trying to become one of the top weaponsmiths in SWG. I bust my ass trying to find the best resources on every planet. On your next point about gear. Gear does matter. I'm starting to even doubt you even play the game or you just want your hand held throughout the whole game. The stats on the gear are used to supplement your builds you will be creating. If you take a look a the sPvP gear you will notice all the runes that you can pick to mix and match how you want your character to operate. Those same items are even available in pve. If you want you can go to LA and see the dungeon sets they have there and take a look at the stats on them. They just don't toss all the stats on gear at the beginning of the game, amazingly, just like other mmos. On the point about the community. I don't mean to be rude but you might be anti-social or you just cannot start your own conversations. Do you wait on other people to talk before you even try to socialize?

you're not alone OP. I wasted my whole weekend forcing myself to continue playing this game, HOPING that I'd eventually find a class, area, something- anything at all that would really feel genuinely fun. 5 forced level 10's later I'm sad to report that for me there is no such thing. I'm glad everyone else is enjoying it but it doesn't look liek I will.
Notable reasons being: PvE is ridiculously boring. DE's,Quests/Story are repetitive and WoW-quality at best (ok maybe a tiny bit higher but way less that TOR for example) or just too feel good homo-style that I can't get into it. Really really boring. WvW queues are so long I just give up on getting in anymore (reminds me of why I quit wow/other mmo's actually, BGs for example). I'm sure I'd love it IF I COULD GET IN (!!!) sPvP is fun and really this games only redeeming quality. but with the masses so focused on leveling and WvW theres no challenge here.
What really perpetuates this cycle though is that due to not getting any XP from sPvP, I could never progress my character to be very useful in WvW. I cannot level in WvW becasue I cannot get through the queue. I can't PvE because I'll rage out about how bored I am and quit.
Now, whats a player like me to do? |

It's 2 days into a game that took 5 years to develop, more patience re pvp queues, as with every other mmorg in existence it takes a bit to bed in and stabilise. Re pve, it's as good as anything out there so not much to be done there, either ignore or move on to another game.
rpg/mmorg history: Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW (9500 hrs on main mage)> oblivion > LOTR (480 Hunter) > Rift (230 hours mage) > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(350 elementalist) Now playing GW2/Diablo 3/Rift Waiting Archeage. |

Originally posted by BruceYee Ever thought about leaving the "zergfest" with some friends, go squad and take over a supply camp guerilla style? There is more to do in WvWvW than running with the herd. -> In GW2, you should learn look left and right of your path.
Maybe. Or maybe GW2 simply asks you to redefine what "goals" means to you. A goal can be as simple as "looking around the next corner to find what's going on there". -> Possible goals for the standart MMO-player: The next level up, the next traitskill, the next slot skill, better (looking) armor, advancing your guild, try out different weapons in sPvP ... the list goes on.
I once aided an asuran scientist in subduing skritt in a cave. (to which I escorted him and his golem first) We then brought those 10 skritt back to his lab where they revolted, broke out of their containments and started wreaking havoc in the lab. More skritt flooded in from the outside. I took out my flamethrower and went to town. It was a lot of fun. Don't mistake heart-quests with dynamic events. -> During a (pre-)launch the population of the starter zones is greater than it will be maybe a week after. Clusterf*cks happen. As long as you deal damage, provide comboable AoE or heal people around you, you get participation. -> Some basic dynamic events are based on your standart MMO list of tasks. What else could they be? Don't let that discourage you.
Gear matters in PvE up to LvL 80. You CAN play LvL 40 content with LvL 10 gear but it's hard. I play an asura engineer and I was very happy to find that leather coat with the long back. People were asking "where you get that?". -> GW2 does break with some MMO traditions. The basics are still there, though not as spotlighted as they are in other games.
I regard what happens when people fight together towards a common goal as communication. In fact I regard the "quiet synergy" between players in GW2 as one of its strongest points. -> GW2 is very immersive and demands a lot of concentration in combat. When you HAVE to dodge and block during a fight so as not to die you don't have time to type in chats. The vital communication comes without words in this game. Just stop listening with your ears alone.
Maybe you should start expecting better of people. Might make you yourself a happier person. Play with friends if it feels too much like a singleplayer to you. -> I have yet to take part in a DE where I haven't had at least 2 or 3 other players at my side. We fight towards the same goal, combo with each other, watch out for each other. All without grouping or saying a word. That is multiplayer to me.
No. -> GW2 is comprised of PvE, sPvP and WvWvW. There is also crafting, questing, dynamic events, exploration, the character story and the Ruins of Orr at endgame.
You seem to not even be looking.
I haven't. Right now I wish I had but I have to watch the money.

Originally posted by vort3x pretty poor logic. since rpgs have been based on table top and videogame rpg genre, which usually has no PvP, why should PvE take a backseat? also WvW has long travel times, usually with only a single useable waypoint on the whole map. that can get boring fast, runing back to the fight, or trying to find the main zerg on the map in a pug.

I'm a bit confused. If people wanted to play GW2 as PvE content. Sort of single player experience, I think this MMO is one of the best for it. You don't have to group, you can pretty much take other players as NPCs that help you fight if you want. There are really great stories to read about, very nice exteriors and fun ambience. As I'm primarily PvE explorer type of player, GW2 is like a wonder to me so far. Huge world, no necessity to rely on other players, quite a few things to explore and find, very fun combat (either in mob or alone). I'm always getting those "WOW" moments. Like standing next to a priest that worships Owl spirit for a while and suddenly he starts to sing a song about glorious Owl's sacrifice. No triggering no nothing. If I just dashed through, I would've never heard it. And who knows how much of this cool moments I've missed in my journeys. But I was always saying that to my friend. I think GW2 won't be WoW breaker... Some people in WoW need the feeling "I'm level 80 and where are the raids I can run 1000 times to get my purples?". Well I don't know if they are there or not and I don't really care. I just enjoy the game. And even if I get bored when I explore everything, It alredy feels to me it's money very well spent. For people that don't see what's in GW2, I'd like to give an advice: First state what you want to do there. If It's small scale Dynamic events, go to low populated servers and just wonder around. I'm on medium and I'm often doing DE alone or 3-4 people helping. There are "major" events, where you have huge amount of players playing together (even though it's been up to 20 for me so far), but there are many "side" events in places where most people don't go (read far from "quest hubs") you can have quite a lot of fun. If it's anything else, try to make a thread "I want to do this and that in GW2, and it's not delivering, what should I do?". To my experience, you usually don't get bashing for "not appreciating game as it is", more like you get real answers... if you are looking for answers that is. Just a word on comminity. If you don't try to socialize, don't expect everyone to greet you with warm hug. Go out and make some friends and you will find out, community is there just waiting for you to find it. |

Well, imagine you go to a themepark... you do the rides as they are untill you lose interest and move onto something else. It's the same with GW2, if the game is too casual for you then move onto another game.

A concrete, perfect example that there is more risk / reward than in other current MMOs, from a simple mechanic : http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/post/5249845#5249845
Risk / Reward is here, it's just not brought to you with a flashy Fox News-like "this just in !" popup. ***** Before hitting that reply button, please READ the WHOLE thread you're about to post in ***** |
