From the bits I played in WvWvW and PVE would I be right in saying that the game rewards you more if you are deealing out damage as opposed to just being in the vicinty of a kill/objective achievement and buffing/protecting other players? A support class thats buffing players around them (but not in a physical group with) is not going to be getting rewarded as much as a player piling on the dps. Yay or nay ? Ranged classes will on balance fair better from dynamic events unless a melee/support class is going around doing the periferal dynamic event objectives like .. using buckets to water plants etc ? In WvWvW a support class is going to be gettign less XP (+++) than a range class becasue in so many situations it isnt going to be viable to get into melee range and the system wont reward you for say ... buffing/protecting your ranged dps ?

So...yes and no to your question. We have no idea how exactly GW2 rewards players with medals, and the system has been only described vaguely. However there were several misconceptions with your post. First, there is no such thing as a ranged or melee class, every class (profession) can do either, and every profession can do damage, support, heal (mildly). That being said, it would go very much against what ArenaNet is trying to do if they don't reward you in some way for supporting other professions. However, please know that just because your build is supportive in nature, does not mean you won't be doing damage. No profession has enough support skills to always avoid doing damage, and many support skills also double as damage dealing moves (specifically but not limited to the guardian). Secondly, from personal experience it seems like as long as you are actively participating, you will be given the highest reward for events in WvW (ex: capturing keeps, etc.) As for player kills, as long as you hit the enemy several times (2-5) you should occasionally recieve experience and loot. There's only rare cases where I haven't been rewarded, and over the past few stress tests those cases have become even less common. So, no you don't have to worry about your profession not being adequately rewarded, and you will be able to play the way you want to play and still be rewarded equally. However, I will be honest that ArenaNet hasn't been extremely forthcoming in describing their system, so we don't know how exactly we are rewarded. Hope that helps. If you ACTIVELY participate in an event, dealing damage, doing objectives, reviving people, healing people, you will most certainly get a gold medal. This isn't the same system as in Warhammer where people were fighting among themselves for higher contribution (and the even worse, random roll afterward). It's not hard to get a gold medal if you actually participate in an event, even doing a bit of damage and then leaving will give you a bronze medal and half-participating will net you a silver.

Without creating another thread on the same subject, and something I never really checked on in the BWE's, is there any log to look at to see which events gave you gold, silver or bronze medals, so you can go back and retry them to get gold?

Originally posted by biggarfoot As far as I know there isn't and I think there should be a log somewhere. That way those "I've done everything and I'm underleveled" posts can be answered quickly by seeing how many events someone did. Queensdale (the starting human zone) has 58 events and 17 hearts, keeping track of all those would've been interesting. Maybe with some ????? in the description while "undiscovered" so it doesn't spoil the fun of exploring and finding them (and then logging the medal you got so you can try again to get another medal) Block the trolls, don't answer them, so we can remove the garbage from these forums |

Originally posted by DrDwarf If you're trying to play as a "support class" you are, and my apologies for being blunt, doing it wrong. There are no support classes. There are no damage classes, nor control classes. You need to rethink how you're playing and the whole role concept from the ground up to really understand the combat. Your skills have various damage, control and support aspects to them, often more than one on a skill. You need to simply learn the skills at your disposal and use them at the right times. Bad guy about to run down an ally? Use some form of control skill on the enemy to keep it off the ally, or possibly something with support on it to help your ally survive the blow. Maybe that comes in the form of an attack that not only damages the enemy but also snares him while giving your ally a bit of a buff.
Seriously, combat really begins to flow and make a lot more sense when you stop trying to play a role and simply play your skills instead. I find it nearly incomprehensible now when I see those I know are huge GW2 fans still trying to work themselves into a role of some type instead of allowing the system to flow around them and riding the current. |

I was always a healer in other games, and after looking at the Guardian, this seems to be a real defensive support role - all the videos show him rushing in to protect, bubble, hide or heal people - with only a small amount of damage dealing. I found this confusing, as I could predict groups asking for this kind of class over others, which seems to be undermine the "no-trinity" stuff. I am trying to move my head away from "being a healer" and just looking forward to playing the game, but I keep spotting classes that seem to lean alot more in my heal direction than others - am I wrong? Should I play the class which I think looks the most fun, or play the class that I am more used to, and predict will be "needed" more in dungeons? Help! Thanks :) "When people don't know much about something, they tend to fill in the blanks the way they want them to be filled in. They are almost always disappointed." - Will Wright |

Originally posted by Kniknax Guardians can deal some amazing damage. All professions will be "needed" in dungeons, the deciding factor will be how good is your knowledge of your chosen prof, how easily you can adapt to situations and change your playstyle accordingly. One minute you are healing/buffing, the next you are dpsing, then a bit of CC. The "best" and most "needed" players will be those who can play all the roles available for their chosen prof, those who truly mastered their profession. Originally posted by Kniknax The Guardian can crush an opponent and deal damage close to the level of a Warrior, and has nifty support features. I think of them somewhat like WoWs Protection Paladin. I have watched plenty of video on this profession, and have waited to make one until release to make it my main. I know for a fact they are hard to bring down in PvP! Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not. |

Originally posted by seridan I read your post and thought only 58 events?? But I counted the ones I did and can only come up with 48 so I'll assume you are correct with this. I must have missed some or don't recall some. Here is my list.

Ok.. So you can simply pitch up at a dynamic event and spam random spells and pour a few buckets on some crops, feed a cow etc and get a gold medal. Just the same reward as the guy that specced correctly to do max dps or uses their cc skills skillfully to turn a battle (granted whilst pretending not to be a dps character) No skill required .. just turn up ....have fun...

Originally posted by DrDwarf the problem is that there are no support PROFS or ranged profs.. all profs can be ranged and do support, example ele with water attunement, they can damage AND heal, eng can attack AND chuck elixers to buff ppl, necros with a staff can attack while buffing the melee.. so pretty much you are thinking in terms of other games and need to reteach yourself.
edit: just saw your above post, the more damage or kills you participate in a DE will give you a better score.. trust me this is so. A friend of mine who was lagging behind, not helping much in a few events and she got a bronze or silver while I got a gold reward.

Originally posted by ariboersma Yes yes.... Can isnt do though. In any fight players will adopt roles and those roles can be to, (by and large) use max dps or do no dps and focus on .... watering plants.. Your gear and talent spec wont matter a jot if you water plants (by and large) so just ...... go through the game and get involved in dynamic at every opportunity but do the objectives that dont require you to actually attack anything.....

To get credit for a 'kill' you need to do 5% or more of the damage. So you could spend 95% of your effort on support and still be getting 'kills'. |

Originally posted by DrDwarf you dont understand.. watering plants IS getting you credit IF that is something the event requires.. but if you dont do it you dont get credit. People standing around do not get credit or not much. I dont see your issue.. different events have different things needed.. you need to adapt to the situation and not think so inside the box. If you limit your playstyle it will hurt you and this is probably the biggest issue for the wow clone MMO crowd.. or the less skilled like my friend.

Originally posted by DrDwarf You answered your own question: - how would the game know that the 'guy who used their cc skillfully' was more important than the guy correctly specced for max dps, or the tank, or the guy who healed him, or the guy who ressed everyone? - what about the player who kept the enemies from flanking you? - what about the player who carried the object that needed to be carried to complete the quest? obviously they couldn't do much whilst carrying it... - or the guy who stayed with the NPC you were supposed to be escorting whilst everyone else ran off to fight?
WAR and Rift tried to rank 'contribution', and it was hilariously exploitable. (or random in the case of WAR's PvP) |

I once did nothing but healing (guardian staff) and reviving people in a big elite (group) DE - got a gold. Well, I suppose I also did some buffs (guardian staff again + shouts and shared virtues) MMO History: |

Originally posted by dumbo11 Since events can fail, and they will, when crappy players are being crappy, and failed events will never yield gold medals, I'd say skill is plenty important. In the betas everyone was helpful at all times, but trust me on this, those who keep messing up and get themselves killed won't be res'd forever, so they won't be doing much in the event and thus won't get a gold reward, even if they don't cause a complete failure. |

Originally posted by DrDwarf I found my favorite support class, also threw out some big dps. Staff Ele!! Fire -- Blow stuffs up. Lots of AoE's, so in keep Dee's use fire. Water, heals, and an AWESOME snare that people just stumble through. Air, STUN and SPEED. this is your support line. Earth, think it has 1 immobilize, 1 snare, and some good defense stuffs. Also, the game doesn't make you compete for gold medals, everyone get a gold medal if you do enough. And the, show up and sit there, argument doesn't work, cause you have to participate. IMO you probably didn't do many DE's if any at all. If you did, than running just a couple and you would understand how this system works. Same for WvW. But in WvW you can't be JUST support. You can't just CC, you will be sitting waiting for CDs, making you dead. And fastly dead too. So what do you do? CC when needed, dps when wanted, and heal yourself a lot.
