I have been burned by so many release day MMORPG purchases in the last year or two (RIFT, DCUO, SWTOR, TSW, etc) that I am simply not throwing more money at the hobby until I have confidence in what I am getting. I have bought into the hype too many times and been lead astray by early reviews and votes of confidence. I don’t care how great people scream GW2 is right now. They are a bunch of Mountain Dew junkies on a sugar high. I am waiting to see what people say a month after release when the new fades off and people have actually progressed deep into the game. Then I will decide if I want to buy it or not and hopefully at reduced price on like Black Friday or something so I actually feel like I get my money's worth for a change.

The thing keeping me on the fence is GW2s community. Im currently playing other mmos and with no exception im observing that people from the gw2 community are doing all they can to bash other mmos.

This is just hurts the whoe mmo community and keeps me wondering if these people will represent how the gw2 community will be after it launches.

Don't judge in game community on basis of overzealous fans you see on forums.

First and foremost: I do not like fantasy. That is why I played City of Heros for so long when all my friends played WoW.

On a secondary note: I PERSONALLY am often locked in a world of conspiracy. (hehe) Sometimes, and GW2 is one of these times, this outlook keeps me from being overwhelmed with excitement. In short: I don't buy into all the mechanical changes GW2 brings to the grouping structure and the removal of the trinity. I fear a community of silent mobs running around smashing DEs without ever saying a word to each other, ala a mindless zerg. With out a trinity I imagine groups of DPS fools without a care as to whether you, I, or their best friend survives.

Those are my musings. It is likley I will pick it up at some point, since I wont be out any thing more than I was out buying ToR's box.....But I am not currently ready to jump in with both feet so to speak.

If anything it s too quiet. It felt like FFXIV as far as chatter was going. The game design unfortunately is solo friendly, while being solo lonely, no chatter at all. Out of game, ya some of the most crazed people I ve ever seen.

1. I don't like the removal of the classic RPG trinity. I enjoy playing a tank and healer in groups. Instead of removing this system, I would rather want to have more than 3 roles, like debuffers, crowd-controllers, buffers (bards) in addition to Tank/DD/Healer. I enjoy when group fights require good pulling -> crowd control -> tanking -> healing -> debuffing -> damage dealing. I dont like the concept of GW2 which tries to replace one trinity with another trinity, instead of expanding the existing one.

2. I dont like the art style, it is too cartoony for my taste.

3. I don't like the so called dynamic events. In Tabula Rasa, when they were first used (2007), they at least had an actual purpose- losing a base against NPC attacks meant you losed spawn points, vendors, etc, here it' doesn't seem that way. It's just a method for players to do group content without even talking to each other.

4. Lack of progression. I like RPGs for its progression. If I feel like playing a skill-based game with little or no character progression, I play an online shooter. Character progression is for me the defining feature of RPGs. I don't like the fact that in GW "Higher level characters will have their power scaled down in areas designed for lower level players,"I like the feeling of improving my character versus environment, if my power is constantly being scaled to the surroundings, I no longer feel like playing an RPG.

4. The fact that it generates so much hype is suspicious. I usually don't enjoy games that appeal to the mass market with a few exceptions. All games in the past that generated this hype failed miserably. That alone, of course, wouldnt be enough to not try it, but it certainly adds up.

I want to highlight some points that seem to come more from assumptions rather than knowledge of the game

1. While seperated roles are gone, GW2 does have controlling, buffing, debuffing, healing, dps, and they are all vitally important to be successful

3. In GW2 there are DE's that, when failed, will lose you vendors, DE's that when successful open up open world dungeons to everyone, including puzzles, chests, mobs. There are DE's that change the landscape. That's the types i've seen, and they certainly feel significant enough to draw me in.

4. While your power is scaled down to lower level areas, the better gear you get at higher levels and the trait poants you spend will still have an impact. Finetuning builds is what it's about in GW2 character progression, and it'll take time to get the gear and setup to be perfect

I simply do not pre-order games anymore.  Wait and see how people like it and if people I trust tell me it rocks, I might drop the cash.

Here is the current business model for all MMORPG's prior to launch:

1.) Generate as much hype as humanly possible, frenzy people in to dropping cash sight-unseen. The goal here is to generate enough pre-sales to cover as much development cost as possible. It seems developers do not much care HOW  hype is generates, or if the verose generating it is even all that accurate.

2.) after launch, prepare for a sharp decline in subs as people get to the other side of the hope and start seeing if the game can live up to their expectation. Let's be honest, more hype usually equals more disappointment for most people. We as consumers usually see this as a mistake..."cut back on the pre-launch hype and let the game do the talking after launch" we might say.

The problem with that the studio must then depend on earning back development costs through subs, which  might take longer and is more uncertain. It is safer to get people into a game before they can play it to see just how much  of their expectations are really met.

Sort version: wait and see and then decide. I trust my RL fellow gamers far more than the PR machine of any game co. Between wesites writing advertisements masked as 'articles' to viral forum posters singing the praises of a game (usually with a post history of 10 or less).

Im still in the fence about game, never try it, only see a few videos and read some reviews.

1 - Community.

Worry me just like in any other game but worry me a little more here because its a game that "forces" friendly behaver. Of course we can see the cool people and the ******* loking to chat but i like to make friends special because their actitude in-game and seems in GW2 we only have one way to behave: friendly. The lack of behave option is strange at my eyes.

2 - Possible lack of drama.

A game without a bit of drama is a boring game. For the little read about the game around it seams theres no possible of drama around players, everthing was build in-game to "force" friendly behaver like i mentioned in reason 1.

I have 3 friends that going to play the game, so i will wait 1 or 2 months and see how the game goes in matter of community and then maybe i join them.

Even its only B2P 60€ is 60€. Im not rich so i dont like to waste money, then i will be on the fence more 1 or 2 months  ;)

For all that get in right from start i wich u all alot of fun  :)

GW2 fanbois insulting people who posted their concerns are a good example why I don't like GW2. Awful fanbase and also because while OK it still is mediocre in every way imho. Oh, and "it's free to play!" is not an argument for me, especially with a cash shop bordering p2w.

People who see trolls everywhere, people who rolls on the floor laughing, people who rolls on the floor laughing and see trolls at the same time, yes 99,99% GW2 crowd.

Do I want to swing my 2-handed sword named Stormbringer and cut their necks in game? yes

is it possible in GW2 ,no.

not interested its pillow fight map where i can give them friendly touch like hug them.

When PvP comes to this product ,so do I and my Stormbringer, till then im in the fence.

Edit : Anet hear me, feature from gods  **cash shop achievements**

Shown as titles and everybody can see them. shop amateur (0$ spent) shop 100 = novice shop 9000 = HAL shop master (over 100 000$ spent)

Now if cash shop amateur kills cash shop master ,killer gets extra honor or whatever it is in this game and if master kills amateur then he gets less honor.

I'm waiting for all loot addled new generation types to clear off back to their wow clones when they realise poopsocking doesn't give you an I win button.

Also still got about a months play left from tsw.

then I will play it. Although to be honest planetside2 will probably take me away from gw2, it seems closer in spirit to daoc pvp wise (like its predecessor). The no names in pvp thing bugs me with gw2, it will hurt WvW longevity.

"Why you guys don't like the game? What's wrong? What is missing? Why don't you like it?"

I feel as if all of these questions could be inversed in a way. I could ask you and others like you: Why do you want us to like the game?
As at the moment it feels very much like "us vs. them". Like cults and other fanatical groups. If you're not with them, you must definitely be against them...
I don't agree with that but I digress.

I like the game, I just don't looove it. I've tried to but just nope. I was giddy to try it out until I actually got hands on time with it and then it all came crashing down for me. A sinking feeling, if you will.

First thing that knocked down my excitement a couple of pegs down was the first thing you're confronted with when logging in. The graphics. I'm not talking about the artistic I DO make a distinction between both. But I'm talking about the technical aspects of the graphics.
I can live with this as I've managed just fine in KoA. I think of KoA and GW2 in the same manner. I'll get over my initial disappointment and just grow to love the art direction.

Then came the combat...aside from the actual features of the combat and gameplay themselves, I don't like it. I don't like the feel of my character's movements. There's no OOMPH there. I promise if I could put it in more technical terms I would. I liked Amalur's, WoW's, Aion's, TERA's combat oomph.

When there are many monsters or players on screen it all gets to a point where I just get pissed off, coupled with the lacking sense of hitting. Clusterfuck much?
I've tried over two whole BWEs and several stress test moments to see if I could make better sense of the visual tells. If it's one on one, it's...ok-ish. The animations on the monster's side were so wishy washy that if I managed to dodge, I'd still get damaged.
If there are more monsters I'm up against or in a mosh pit of monsters and players then forget about a melee character I switch to survival mode or go ranged. I'm pretty stubborn and have almost refused to.

Other things I experienced in-game made me all the more apprehensive. I refused to drink the Kool-Aid at that moment. I've decided to play it like I would any of the other MMOs I could stomach until I've reached the cap level and see what kind of longevity there is. Then and only then will my apprehension possibly turn into love and hopefully not the other way around. As I'll finally be playing together with many of my buddies.

By the by...I thought this thread was made for the fence sitters...Why are some laying into the ones who posted why they're on the fence?

Keep it clean, no kittens have to die in this thread.

I am sorry, you will have a genocide of kittens, as always...

People will post a subjective opinions while others will bash them for it. And then you will have people butthurt that someone likes the game they dont and bash them for being 'fanbois' (oh how i find this term disgusting). And you will have a people that flame at them in contrary, and they will prove their point, while no one is actually right.

Or you will attract sandboxers who, i dont know why, spend their time on these forums more, rather than playing EVE/UO/whatever and just bash the GW2 for not being sandbox.

It always turn into MMO Fan or Sandbox/Themepark Forum PvP. If you want a objective reasons why people dont like it, ask someone among your IRL friends, Guild-mates, or whoever you can trust to give you objective arguments of GW2 flaws. Anywhere else but here.

Am i objective by myself on this post? Not really, but i am just posting my points of view on situation. Sorry for anyone offended.

If half of the posters in this thread took the time out to learn a little about the game before they post I think we would have a lot less posts. On the other hand the blind fanboyisms are just as bad and you guys make the GW2 comunity look like a bunch of tards. Imo if you are guaging anything that has to do with GW2 from the posts on this site you're doin it wrong.

A few posts here are good (like Meph's) but others are mostly just people not interested in learning anything about the game and go off of what they hear on the internet. I mean "when GW2 has PvP I'll start playing". Seriously, if you have not seen PvP vids yet then you're not even trying.

Performane is keeping me from buying immediately.

I'm not happy with what they did to the skill system vs GW1.

The rest is fine, will be playing semi-soon'ish.

I'll try and give an objective opinion (and please take it as an opinion) on why some of my friends are on the fence about this game.

1) Dynamic Events = Trivial Content.

With so many people doing DE's, the content just becomes real easy after a while and nothing is truly challenging until 'end-game'

2) The 'RIFT' Effect.

Me and my friends also had a very similar hype to Rift. Everything felt smooth and polished, but it just felt like it had been done before. I know there are lots of arguements against this with everything thats added in the game, but its just a feeling they get.  Your still killing boars/wolves and still collecting things. Maybe they've had enough with MMO's?

3) Confused Progression.

So far the progression is purely cosmetic. But since the gem store sells nice looking armor skins and the armor from HoM is nice and they never played GW1, they are pretty confused on progression if you can just buy armor skins anyway and feel like they are already behind before the game has begun.

This was all showed to them at a LAN at a BWE and these were the main 3 things that came up.

Op, should have expected you would get very few people in this thread who were genuinely 'on the fence'. Mostly just the ones that decided years ago it wasn't a game they wanted, and we have all already read their daily threads on the subject. Kinda renders the feedback here useless/redundent. Was inevitable though thats the kind of people drawn to this type of thread, no ones fault just human nature.

GW2 enthusiasts - People on the fence can be reasoned with. People already decided cannot. You need to stop wasting your time on the latter, or at least be able to spot the difference.

Waiting for: A skill-based MMO with Freedom and Consequence.
Woe to thee, the pierce-ed.

60$ is alot of money for a brand of fantasy that I'm particularly sick of. Going to wait for a price drop, otherwise it looks like a fun game.
