I was thinking about the 5 character slots and how it's not enough for me so I plan on buying the remaining 3 slots regardless. So if they charged an extra $30 for the game, it shouldn't really bother me. Others might not feel the same however, and there may even be some that would appreciate paying less for the game at the trade off of having even less character slots.
Here in the great white north I would pay $60 for 5 slots, or $90 for 8 slots. Using the same logic, they could sell the game at $40 but only give 3 slots. So would you support these options if they let you choose up front? If so, which would you pick?
EDIT: Just to be clear, I'm just looking for feedback from the consumers perspective. I'm not suggesting they change anything nor am I questioning why they went the way they did. Maybe I should add a poll.

I see no point in what you suggest. The price is not just a random digit, its an important decision made by many directors after many meetings. Its what the product cost.

I think they went with 5 slots because that allows one character per race. And the price tag for the game is based on the normal price of any AAA PC game release. In other words, the two decisions were not at all related. Personally, I"m more than willing to pay 10 dollars each for the 3 extra slots I want. Each alt, if you actually play it, is going to take more than a month to get through the "whole game" on, so it still comes out to less per month than a normal subscription. That's just my way of looking at it, obviously others may see it differently. |

Originally posted by mazut The game is an excellent value, there is no doubt about it. I doubt I will spend much more than the $30 for extra slots from the cash shop, but if they added something else that interested me I wouldn't hesitate to pick it up. Fortunately for me Im not an alto-holic. Ill probably have 2 or 3 mains and use one slot for a pvp character.

You can buy the extra slots for in-game gold through buying gems too. $10 per slot and 5 slots seems fine to me. |

I am going to try and make this game all it can be! One of my main goals will to be buying extra slots from crafting and such, making gold. It may take a painfully long time, but I'm retired and I have lots of it to spare. edit: I did vote Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not. |

Originally posted by Kuppa I talked about being like that once. I remember talking with my wife about how we were going to only have 1 main and a off-time toon so that we would progress them fully, rather than having a bunch of half-progressed toons. I just can't decide on what class will be "THE" class.

That's because practically all the classes are a bunch of fun to play!

Originally posted by eyelolled This logic is wrong, but I will answer your question. I Like the 60 for 5 slots. This is a pretty standard b2p game price, and the number of character slots is not really limiting to a large majority of players. There are going to be those who don't think that it is enough, and there are going to be those who will buy slots to be able to make a character of each class, and these people will buy character slots to make up for it. The rest of use will find a use for all 5 slots, be it characters for friends or family, or storage mules or maybe we really only want to play 5 classes anyways. Buying the game for a reduced price to get less character slots might seem like a sensible idea, but this is only because of a false connection between price and number of character slots. No such connection exists.
Edit: I selected the last option on your poll because I don't feel like this pole means anything. I used to TL;DR, but then I took a bullet point to the footnote. |

5 slots is pleanty for me, as i tend to work on only three classes at a time. I don't really plan on making too many alts. This will make their extra slots in the game optional for people like me which is what they intended their shop to be.

I think 5 is about right. Initialy I was a little upset about it because I thought I wouldn't be able to try every profession. However, then I thought that throughout every MMO I've played, I've always had 2 or 3 characters I've stuck with. I never have seem to have gone beyond that. In GW2, that would leave me with 2 or 3 slots to play around with. If I don't like the feel of a character, I'll just delete it and start a new one. I'll still be able to try them all, which I'm itching to do. Besides, I've found if you have too many alts that you seriously play, you don't seem to master any. I normally like to focus on a couple of classes to become good at paying them. Worst case is a year from now if I do happen to fill all 5, I'll pay the $30 to get 3 more. Still a good bang for the buck. |

5 slots will probably be enough for me. But anyways, if I need more I'll just buy.

Could they have charged more for more character slots? Maybe, but that would make it an unrealistic propersition for some potential customers. In the UK GW2 is £20-£10 more expensive then any other game at launch on the PC, (most AAA PC games in the UK retail for anything from £40-£30). So charging £50 upfront is a risk in itself, anything more would have made it a difficult sell to casual buyers. ANET have given you enough to get started but not so much that you won't be thinking about using the cash shop to try every class out, amongst other things. I guess there thinking is they'll sell the game at a higher proce point as a MMO without a sub, (so an advanatge to the consumer), while down the line people won't realise how much extra there spending in the cash shop, to unlock other things you can get in a sub based game. This looks like a job for....The Riviera Kid! |

TBH I'm surprised at the results of the poll, I thought more people would be thinking along the same perspective as me.
