The Origin line of computers launched earlier this week with great fanfare. We had the opportunity to check out the Origin EON 11-S laptop. See how it fared in our exclusive review.

I should note that Origin gives you seven processor options (from the entry level Intel B960 Pentium Dual-Core Processor to the very powerful Intel Core i7 3820QM Quad-Core Processor), twenty-three different HD choices (four mechanical and eighteen SSD), and five choices when you are choosing RAM (4GB up to 16GB). There’s a lot of options that can change the cost and function of the machine.

this is just too random.

Why a laptop review??

Most MMORPGs aren't that power hungry, you could play them on really crappy old machines (which I still do today) and even newer games or 3D games play great on machines that are 3-4 years old.

My MMO laptop that I log around to play occasional AoC/Eve Online/World of Tanks/other misc, is a 2007 model and I run everything on the highest settings without any problems.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is that top of the line gaming laptops meant for groundbreaking new graphics and MMORPGs in general are not a compatible topic.

It's almost as if there are no better news to report on...oh wait...some of the biggest MMORPGs are about to come out in the next few months, so yeah...

MMORPGs require hardware regardless of game lalartu. Not every computer has the capability of playing at the highest settings (My old one was a Toshiba satallite for casual reasons and it suffered from many a fps hit at times.)

The newest line of Origin computers came out this week and since they are brand new PC models they may as well be reviewed to see if one of them has the ability to play the best of games for the longest of times without eating too much from the customers pocket due to them also having to buy the games in general. Sadly this review shows that this computer won't be able to do it (The size alone is a turn off and no actual numpad.)

Graphics is always a topic of MMOs. The better the graphics and fluider the animations you can play with the more potential enjoyment you may have. In other words Scenery Porn. For those competitive streamers, sometimes particle effects can slow down your fps if there are too many and thus more power would be needed from your computer to draw them all out.

For what it's worth, though pricier, the bigger models (15 and 17") have the same horsepower AND the features Arden was missing.  They just come with a much higher pricetag.

Lalartu: highest settings on a laptop from 2007 do not sequel highest setting on a 2012 gaminglaptop. I see many people make that mistake.
On topic, the origin laptop do deen Nice.

Let's start with the obvious:  complaining about the form factor constitutes missing the entire point of the laptop.  The only reason to consider this laptop is if you want an 11" gaming laptop.  Being able to cram real gaming hardware into an 11" form factor is an impressive feat of engineering, which is why no one had done it before.  Dell might tell you about their Alienware M11x, but anything with a ULV processor isn't a gaming laptop.

Next, the reviewer doesn't seem to be aware of what laptop he's reviewing.  It's a Clevo W110ER.  Clevo's business model is that they'll build barebones laptops and sell them to a variety of vendors, which can then add a processor, memory, storage, software, peripherals, and maybe some other bits, and then sell them to the general public.  You can get the same laptop elsewhere from a variety of sources with different configuration options:

http://www.avadirect.com/gaming-laptop-configurator.asp?PRID=24271

http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np6110-clevo-w110er-p-4343.html

http://www.sagernotebook.com/index.php?page=product_customed&model_name=NP6110

http://web.eurocom.com/EC/ec_model_config1(1,228,0)

http://www.pro-star.com/index.cfm?mainpage=productdetail&model=W110ER

The 15" and 17" laptops that Origin offers aren't a larger version of the one that was reviewed.  They're the Clevo P150EM and Clevo P170EM, respectively.  The latter two are very similar to each other, but not at all similar to the one reviewed.  Rather, the Clevo P150EM and P170EM are high end gaming laptops.

They offer a GeForce GTX 660M in the base model, but if you pick that card, you've missed the point of the laptop.  If that's the hardware you want, you can get it much cheaper elsewhere.  The point is to grab a top of the line Radeon HD 7970M or GeForce GTX 680M (which are about as fast as each other, but the former is a lot cheaper), together with an Ivy Bridge quad core processor, and then you've got a powerful gaming system in a laptop form factor.  Like other Clevo laptops, these are also available from many vendors.

The reviewed laptop comes with only a GeForce GT 650M.  The review neglected to mention that it's a DDR3 version of a GeForce GT 650M, not a GDDR5 version, so it will be somewhat crippled for lack of memory bandwidth.  It's still the most powerful video card to ever be sold in 11" laptops, and by a wide margin.  But on an absolute scale, it's not really that fast; you'll probably be able to get integrated graphics that are faster in about two years, or whenever DDR4 memory is ready.  It's about as fast as this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102988

Note the price tag on that.  That's about the lowest end that you can go and call it a gaming card without being a complete liar.  But again, that's a desktop card, and you can't put it in an 11" laptop form factor, which is the entire point of the reviewed laptop.

They've been available for about three months already.  I don't know if Origin has sold them for that long or if they just got around to offering them this week.  They are current generation hardware, but this is hardly a launch day review type of thing.

Ordinarily with a gaming laptop, you want to plug the laptop into the wall while playing games.

For the Clevo W11ER, the processor and video card each have a TDP of 45 W.  Add in other bits and it might be possible to get a power draw of 100 W.  I don't know if the laptop will even let you do that on the battery or if it will throttle back clock speeds severely.  If it lets you game normally from the battery, you're probably looking at about 20 minutes of battery life.

If gaming on a battery is your goal, then you need to look for low power hardware.  There, the AMD A10-4655M is pretty much unbeatable, as that has a 25 W TDP that includes both the processor and graphics.  HP will let you get it configured properly here:

http://www.shopping.hp.com/en_US/home-office/-/products/Laptops/HP-ENVY/B2S72AV?HP-ENVY-Sleekbook-6z-1000

You'd need the A10-4655M processor upgrade ($100 to upgrade), and to properly match the memory channels (two 4 GB modules).  HP charges $100 for the memory upgrade, but if it's upgradable by the end user, then you could do it yourself for $25.  It would be silly not to grab a 7200 RPM hard drive while you're at it, since it's only $10 to upgrade, unless you're going to replace the hard drive by your own SSD.

Samsung offers the same APU in a smaller form factor here:

http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Series-NP535U4C-A01US-14-Inch-Laptop/dp/B0083S3N3W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1345300665&sr=8-1&keywords=A10-4655M

The memory is clocked lower, however, and it doesn't say whether it's one 4 GB module or two 2 GB modules; if it's the former, then you'd need to fix it yourself.

The A10-4655M is a low voltage part, designed for thinner laptops.  Thinner laptops don't have very much room for a battery, so they tend to come with a smaller battery, and that hurts your battery life.  If you need long battery life under gaming loads, you can buy an external laptop battery.

Alternatively, you could go for a laptop that is a little more power hungry but has a much larger battery.  HP will sell you one of those here:

http://www.shopping.hp.com/en_US/home-office/-/products/Laptops/HP-Pavilion/A3H21AV?HP-Pavilion-dv6z-7000-Entertainment-Notebook-PC

The AMD A10-4600M is clocked higher than the A10-4655M, but has a 35 W TDP rather than 25 W.  Upgrading to the A10-4600M ($100), 8 GB of 1600 MHz memory ($50), and a 9 cell battery ($30) brings the price tag to $730.  If you've got a larger budget, they also offer a 1080p matte monitor ($150), and you can buy your own SSD elsewhere to replace the hard drive (typically around $100 or $200, depending on capacity).  That might get you about two hours of battery life under gaming loads, in addition to running games smoothly at moderate graphical settings.

although I see that "scenery porn" may be important for a few MMOs out there (SWTOR, AoC, Rift. GW2), about 95% of all games listed on this site can be played on computers that are years old.

Even the newly released Tera played fine on my POS gateway from 2007, I was even able to make a fraps recording while playing it too.

MMORPGs are produced for masses of gamers in mind, meaning that they make them in such a way that you could play and enjoy the game even on a crappy computer. ex: I can play WoW on medium-high settings on my ancient PC at work and had few sessions of LOTRO with my co-workers on low settings as well.

The majority of top of the line gaming PCs however are aimed at people playing the newest 3D single player or small scale multiplayer games.i.e. games like Skyrim, Witcher 2 etc...

Buying a new PC to play a MMORPG is a huge overkill, in my opinion.

But I guess my main problem with this article is that it just seemed too random and too out of place.

It had very little to say about how MMOs play on this, with the exception of mentioning keyboard layout, which basically is a given, since he was reviewing a standard shaped laptop.

It also had no mentioning of performance of biggest MMOs out there, e.g. he could have given some sort of a review on how this laptop handled games like SWTOR, Rift, Tera and GW2

And overall, there was nothing new mentioned other than what you can already find on sites like Amazon or even the official laptop website.

For what it's worth, a laptop review on MMORPG site should focus on how this machine is good/bad for MMORPG players and give concrete details on the performance

MMOs can run very well even on my crappy laptop. However, 11 inch laptop is not the solution for a gaming laptop. The hardware is perfectly fine to run any MMO on super ultra high but nowadays it's not very hard to spot a good gaming laptop. They are usually geared with the latest i7 generation + Geforce GTX 650, 660, 680 etc. However, this hardware is just an overkill for the MMOs currently on the market. Why would you spend 1k+ pounds on a gaming laptop just to play MMOs :D You would want to play all of the other fancy games :D

Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.

If you're buying a laptop and intending to play games on it, then you don't want to buy something that is barely good enough today.  When you pick up some new game six months from now, it might not be good enough, and then you'll have to replace it already.

Out of interest, and in the spirit of openess, can you please tell us how many of these they gave you to get you to review it on the site? It seems so out of place on this site that there must be a reason behind it.

Huh?  Your game line up must be comprised of all the bottom feeders f2p games and of course Wow.  Everything else takes a decent computer.

Personally I prefer a tower for gaming, but if you need mobility, nice to see another company making gaming laptops.

Don't understand all the criticism, any gaming site is going to review hardware along with software for gaming.  Like people can't think, just want to whine about something.

Actually, it was only on loan to us for three weeks, and sent back via UPS. :) Nice jab though.

We are merely trying to do more hardware related content, and Origin agreed to let us test drive their new line.

@ Bill   You guys should consider beefing up the hardware section by getting some real hardware guys to do the reviews and also so someone to give tutorials on things like overclocking or even basic hardware upgrading. A lot of the gamers on this site really don't have an idea of how to do a lot of the basic things.

Out of interest, and in the spirit of openess, can you please tell us how many of these they gave you to get you to review it on the site? It seems so out of place on this site that there must be a reason behind it.

Actually, it was only on loan to us for three weeks, and sent back via UPS. :) Nice jab though.

We are merely trying to do more hardware related content, and Origin agreed to let us test drive their new line.

I don't blame you for reviewing this piece of hardware rather than some other.

But I do blame you for posting a laptop review without apparently even knowing what the laptop was or why a sensible consumer would or wouldn't consider that particular model in the first place.
