Not a fan of "normalization". In fact, it's something that would make me quit a MMORPG. But I don't play Rift, so I don't care. Character Progression > Equality When I want equal playing field where time invested doesn't = advantage, I play FPS games. |

Originally posted by Praetalus No, but GW1 is lol. And if you start telling me about games like DoTA, starcraft, or LoL, let me tell you they are not MMORPG. And we are at a mmorpg forum so that indicrectly says we are only talking about mmorpg. Not to mention all those mmorpg try to do normalized gear failed, and a failed game which no one plays don't count. But people care about GW2, because they created the "standard" of the current market and the future. |

just curious,
but since GW2 is the new thing now days, when will it be ok to start blaming GW2 for all the MMO genre issues?
thats been on my mind for a while now.

good for Trion.. personally I'm a fan of the non gear based PVP.. now saying that hopefully they put in some cool gear for cosmetic purposes to give a little extra incentive. I personally don't mind straight skill based PVP but like little something to look forward too and cosmetic gear is fine with me.
However I don't think this is going to sit right with current PVPers in that game.. but who knows. I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. If I buy a candy bar at a store, oftentimes, I will drop it... so that it achieves its maximum flavor potential. --Mitch Hedberg |

On topic, I think the GW2 developers have done a nice job fitting together different styles of play. Though no game is going to manage every little thing. Other devs are likely to appreciate what they've done too, but the bean counters opinion will be solely focused on sales and profit. If that comes through, it will be easier to green light other projects. If you are waiting for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one. |

Originally posted by aionix It's not like things could have gotten worse. Everything was just a direct Xerox of the game before it, trying to catch lightning in a bottle when Blizzard already owned the lightning and the bottle. Injecting change into this genre is what GW2 is always going to be remembered for. no GW2 won't kill WoW, but it's time to move on and quit worrying about those people still playing it. - eyelolled |

If Trion spent more time copying GW2 instead of WoW then Rift would be a lot better off.

Originally posted by MattVid Same thing Blizzard did with all of their games so.... You really think that WOW has anything original on it? If yes then you obviously missed to play many mmos that got "ripped off" their features so WOW can be as successfull as it was. ^_^ Anyway... normalization in mmos exists since City of Heroes and Guild wars which both appeared in 2004 (GW officially released in 2005, CoH in april 2004). Both games were in development for years before. I remember pictures on how GW looked in 2001-2002 when it was still in development. The 3D Models looked horrific. :p Then the first preview came in 2004 and they looked totally the opposite which was beautifull and stunning for that time. :) |

Competition is healthy for the genre. We, the players, have waited years for a developer to finally clue on to the fact that they should NOT just copy WoW so blatantly and cross their fingers and toes. World of Warcraft is great and what it does and it's never going to be beaten by a game trying to emulate it, period. The problem for WoW though is that its getting tired and players are looking for something new and have been for quite some time, and not basically the same dressed up differently (hello BioWare and Trion). TSW hit the mark to a degree and Guild Wars 2 is going to do the same but in a much, much bigger way. It won't cripple WoW but it will take a huge chunk of players from it.
This is what the MMO genre so desperately needed, BioWare with all of their cash really had a shot at it but failed spectacularly. If developers of future MMOs cannot now see how to develop their future MMOs going forward they really should get out of the industry and do something else. I am looking at you TESO Zenimax Online (please make me eat my words!).
If there is one thing that can almost be guaranteed, its the success of Blizzards next MMO. It will wipe the floor with its competition but it will also encourage Blizzard to get creative which they haven't had to do for over 5 years. I honestly think Guild Wars 2 will be close to king of the heap for the next few years until then. Even then GW2 will continue to build on its player base with some (hopefully) excellent expansions.
Bottom line, the release of GW2 is just what the MMO genre needed. Thank you ArenaNet! From the players and the future MMO investors and developers. |

Originally posted by Lord.Bachus I agree on this one. GW2 feels funny and unique now, but if everyone copied GW2, it would get the status of "the old and outdated game", like WoW is crowned to be. Playing ATM: Diablo III KICKSTARTED: Camelot Unchained. (250 USD) |

Originally posted by MMOExposed We can blame it after release :P For now it's all very subjective. Did other companies take notes from GW2? If I were a developer I would definitely take a few notes. They have good ideas. Good ideas that CAN be implemented into other games. If I could make a GW2 system work in my game I probably would. I would also take some notes from WoW. They aren't at the top for no reason. Could you imagine a raid with horde and alliance? That would be friggen SWEET. Play for fun. Play to win. Play for perfection. Play with friends. Play in another world. Why do you play? |
