Blizzard Logo

Well folks, shortly after I posted here about the dip in Blizzard subs, we have another Blizzard story worthy of the news report.

Yes folks, Blizzard with all their mega millions have been hacked. Accounts info has been stolen outside of China (NA and rest of the world I am guessing here), China has a different system and Blizz a different way of counting subs there (time card nonsense).

The big question is, of course, (similar to Sony) why a big tech company like Activision Blizzard cannot scure their customers info better.

Are perhaps the business suits who run Blizzard cutting costs on online security and, hence, are easy targets for the hackers? It would seem they were easily hacked.

More importantly with Panda expansion coming soon would you, joe and jane Warcraft, still trust them with your credt card and personal information still? What if they were hacked again? Without a major re/vamp in security they would be easy I would have guessed.

More info on the story from Forbes magazine

As always feel free to comment...

It's not the corps you can't trust, it's the thieves that think they need to break in and steal everything that's the problem.

But it is pretty typical to blame the victims in this day and age.

And no, I'm not a Blizzard apolligist. Everyone is getting hacked these days.

No credit cards were compromised. If you're that worried about it I suggest you cancel all your credit cards and never use the internet to buy anything. The list of companies that have actually had credit card information stolen includes Mastercard and Visa. There is no such thing as complete security.

Blizzard at the moment are stating that in their best knowledge accounts have not been stolen yet, but are urging their customers to change passwords (why would you change passwords, eh?). The point of the story, though, is the ease with which a major tech company was hacked (again)!

I think hackers these days are getting way better at hacking than the Security People can Secure their databases.

Unfortunately, the age of the Hackers is blooming and kids 5 years old are already getting laptops and smart phones that has more cpu power than a 2 year old desktop computer.

Even if you have Billions to spend just on security, it can still be hacked if a group of people wanted to hack into your accounts.

Celebrities are getting their phone hacked because we no longer uses Cameras. In the days long past  cameras with film , even Digital Cameras that uses memory cards can't be hacked because those information are stored physically. But nowadays all the information is in the cloud, ripe for the pickings for the knowledgeable.

OP if you are so afraid of your information being stolen, I suggest that you should stop using Credit Cards, and go back to using cash and Time Cards. Because your Credit Card information can be stolen even if you are just standing in line at the Grocery Store, or pumping gas.

Its your decision to trust them or not.

But if hackers want to hack a company they will be succesfull at one point. every  mmo company is hackable.

Well, if someone is able to steal account info including password security info then you can bet you the underlying problem is poor security at the hacked company.

EVE in 2013 - DUST 514, CSM8, Fanfest, 10th Anniversary, Uprising, Odyssey. Gonna be a good year :)

filmoret: One thing I have never figured out is why the game devs hardly ever fix simple problems that arise. It is like they don't care about the pvp community.

Nitth: What makes you so sure its a simple fix?

filmoret: Because most of them are. Sometimes its just changing a number in a code string other times its creating a few variables. However none of them should take over a few hours of coding.

It's inevitable that they would get hacked. Hundreds or even thousands of people are probably trying to hack their sites and servers right now. All of their stuff has public facing systems and all of it needs to have access to the account information. There are two things that stand out to me. One, they seem to have their stuff separated - only North American info got downloaded and no credit card information got downloaded. Two, they didn't pull a Sony. As much as you can trust anyone with your personal information and credit card information, you can trust Blizzard.

Yes I will trust them with my C/ C, it happens, no online payiment system is completely safe. Everything that is on the Net is hackable. But I won't trust them delivering good games. After Diablo and Pandaria, I will think twice before buying another Blizzard game.

Zenimax.......players want Skyrim Online. They do NOT want WOWTES

You have barbed wire, security cams, attack dogs and laser-trip alarms gaurding your dwelling?

No? Then you have poor security and it's your own fault if someone breaks in and takes your stuff.

So you have no idea. It could have been anything from they called called customer service and asked  for the information to a room full of dedicted supergenius hackers worked on the problem 24/7 for years and lucked into a zero day hack. What I can bet is you have no clue how it was done or how easy it was.

Blizzard hacked! Can we still trust them with our credit card and personal info?

Lol, what choice do you have? Where else will you go?

There is NO miracle patch.

95% of what you see in beta won't change by launch.

Hope is not a stategy.

According to Blizzard's announcement

-email-addresses and answers to security questions got stolen, but personal information or credit card information was not stolen

-passwords were stolen, but in encrypted form and the hackers would have to decipher them individually to actually use them

I'd say the fact that hackers got so little information after a successfull hack speaks for Blizzard that they've likely had good security measures in place, and because they also announced it quickly enough and on their own initiative there's no reason to not to trust them. They seem to have done much better job than many other companies.

You should obviously switch to one of the companies that is unaware it was hacked or unwilling to publically admit it when it happens.

This !

They did what they can, asked everyone to change their passwords before the Hackers decipher the codes, so now if a customer decided to not change their passwords and waits for the Hackers to steal their information, then its no longer Blizzard's fault, its now your own damn fault for not protecting your information.

2 years ago the same thing happened to NCSoft.

Should all the people that bought GW2 be worried that NCSoft's poor security will lose their vital information?

This kind of thing happens from time to time and all we all can do is hope that its nor serious.
