Trust in a company that made a theme park weekend getaway ?  No thanks.  Go take a look at mmos like UO, DAOC and FFXI. MMOs like these made players love mmos.

... TRUST.

It's something that is often overlooked but it is probably the most fundamental aspect that all players subconciously desire. Why do players always ask about longeivity of a game? why do they always speculate about success? or sub numbers? Why are many players wary of f2p or port games? It is because they want to know if they can trust an mmorpg company with their INVESTMENT.

when gamers dive into an mmorpg, it is like they are starting an account at a bank. They tell the bank "Hey, i will start this account with you and from now on this is where i will be storing all (virtual) money i make, my achievements, and my time investment for the next few months/years or whatever." What we as the players expect the bank to reply is that "OK, sure. I promise to keep your investment safe, to make sure we use this money to better our services (expansions, patches, balances and not to just pocket everything), to keep it secure (hacks, password stealing, bots, etc), listen to and value your feedback, and to above all, NOT TO JUMP SHIP AND MAKE A RUN FOR IT JUST BECAUSE SUBSCRIBER BASE DIPS by 10%.

Instead, nowadays with all the wow clones and console-style themepark games, the traditional expectations of trust has been raped and violated. Companies nowadays lie to us about future updates and patches, never listen to our complaints and concerns, and jump ship as soon as soon as the going gets rough. They tell us that they plan to make a happy home for us for the next few years while in the back of their minds they are already planning for an escape route after their user base discovers that the game is shallow and leaves after the first month. Whats worst is that most big game companies accept this as the current business model: Make your money with the first month, "founders" packs, and the first month subs, and then GTFO as fast as they can.

Hopefully arenanet will restore this trust in us gamers. If they can maintain this trust, then they will truly succeed and maybe even topple the aging behemoth that is WoW..

Sry, but thats naive, maybe you didnt notice it yet, but all the gw2 money come from NCSOFT, and they are even worse than EA, if a game dont work they just shut it down, it wont happen with GW2 i know, but you need to undestand that NCSOFT want money and if after the 1st Month they dont get what they want, they will sell us more thing in the CS, did you remeber skills packs from gw1? . Like it or not, NCSOFT will have the last word on everything about GW2, so be ready to wait 6 months or a year for the 1st content update in gw2.

Not really having any great trust issues with the companies I have dealt with, they're in it to make money, and separate me from as much of mine as possible.

This!  I think the OP is assigning way too much thought into it for most players.  Most people just want to play a fun game.  If the game is fun and well made they'll play,  If it's bug ridden and boring they won't.  I played SWTOR and Diablo 3.  I was disappointed by SWTOR, but I didn't feel my trust was violated.  If Bioware ends up making another game and it's fun I"ll play it.

The same applies to D3.  I played it and actually enjoyed it for what it was.  Once I had enough I stopped playing.  I'll play another Blizzard game as along as it's fun.

IF anything, the thing they listened to and shouldn't have, was the idea an MMORPG is all about the journey, endgame doesn't matter. The journey was fine, the destination not so much.

IMO, the endgame is still part of the journey... Until you defeated the Uber boss of the patch/xpac you haven't reached the final destination.

You, and those like you, are the vocal minority.  You may see the hundreds, or even thousands, of message posts, twitter rants or blog posts about disgruntled fans and feel that Blizzard has betrayed everyone and Blizzard will fall because of it, but you're wrong.  For every one of you ranting about how bad D3 was there are hundreds who played it, enjoyed it and left it at that.  For them it was a game, they played and when they were done they moved on.  They didn't assign some deep seeded hatred to Blizzard.

Heck, D3 has sold what, 10 million copies?!?!  I'm pretty sure Blizzrd has plenty of people ready to line up for their next offering.

No offense but to me that sounds like a single player game, I don't play an MMO to beat a boss.. :)

As for you thinking GW2 will topple WoW.  Lmfao.

Buddy......he never literally said GW2 will topple WoW, he said maybe. If you understand the word "maybe" you'll realize you misunderstood. lmao.....

Like I said, D3 pissed off a lot of people.  D3 has sold 10 million, you are correct, but if they ever release a D4 (i'm guessing no) then I guarantee Blizz doesn't get 50% this number.  Feel free to bookmark this post.

The thing is though, I feel that D3 was just a benchmark for a RMAH for Titan, and am guessing that Titan will contain the same fail.

It won't topple it, but how are those wow players going to feel finally looking over the fence at a game that us bigger and better :). Winter of discontent me thinks.

rpg/mmorg history: Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW (9500 hrs on main mage)> oblivion > LOTR (480 Hunter) > Rift (230 hours mage) > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(350 elementalist)

Now playing GW2/Diablo 3/Rift

Waiting Archeage.

I would change the sentence "What players want..." to "What I want..." or at least "What some players want if you know at least one more person that shares your thoughts". Generalization in this case does not apply, in my opinion. In fact, I am a player and your theory does not apply to me, so that it ultimately is a fallacy the way it is composed.

"With all the wow clones and console-style themepark games...". I have not seen more console-style themepark game than GW 2 in a very long time.

"And maybe even topple" the eight year old game. Not very ambitious, yet still unrealistic, in my opinion.

You take gaming much more seriously than I do. Considering spending 50 bucks and some time playing a PC game an investment...

Playing: Nothing atm
Waiting for: ArcheAge, The Repopulation, "Titan", EQ Next

Hmm, not sure how you came to that conclusion, considering the single-player comment I'd have assumed the player didn't play to beat on any type of mob at all.

Weakling mobs? I think the biggest boss in wow can fit in the mouth of the biggest boss in gw2 and can take on a hundred players :)

After having discovered the NCsoft and ArenaNet logos at the Vasco booth (a company offering secure login services) I grabbed my chance to get some confirmation. Randy confirmed that they have ‘lined up’ with Vasco to explore the various security options they have to offer. If and what kind of security measures they will eventually implement though are not yet determined.

No no no... this is what made YOU love MMOs. Please try to avoid such broad generalizations such as "players" and claim it represents a majority. *sigh*

That doesn't make sense. He is specifically talking about fighting a boss.
