OP  8/05/12 1:30:01 AM#1

Hello all

So i am looking for a new MMO, as probably everyone in this part of the forums. The problem might be that the MMO i am looking for most probably does not exist, but i still wanted to give it a try. The game i am looking for is not for me alone to play, but for three more friends of mine, so we always play MMOs in a team of four.

This means we need the following features mandatory:

Groups of four+ possible in PvE (instances, group quests, etc...) - that should be no problem in most MMOs

Groups of four+ possible in instanced PvP (Battlegrounds) - that should be no problem in most MMOs

But now lets look on what we would like to see in addition to that:

Real Bodys in PvP, it is so much more fun if a tank can block the way to the healer. I cant stand those ppl jump forth and back right through my Char anymore. (Warhammer online was good here, sadly the rest of the game was crap.) - I dont know any game beside Warhammer online with that feature yet

Real Character Customization is what i really would like to see. To me, Epic Loot is NO character customization. I am sick of games where Chars are all the same and differ only by having some green, blue or purple equipment and maybe a few Talents. Good Character Customization was offered in City of Heroes and Anarchy Online. In more modern games like WoW, Swtor etc there is no customization possible, stats like strength or agility are just fixed, skills are learned automatically while leveling and sometimes you can not even choose your weapon (like in SwTor).

Having a crafting system would be nice. Doesnt need to be too fancy, the WoW crafting system was good enough for me, but a little bit better than the warhammer system for example it should be.

Summary:

I am looking for a game with PvP and PvE suitable for four friends playing together. It should have real bodys like Warhammer online, real Character Customization like Anarchy Online and some sort of crafting.

Happy for all hints and advices!

Thank you alot!

Bernd

If you havent tried it, TSW has what you described.

Dungeons are 5 man. Story/elite/nightmare

Without question TSW has the most character customozation out there right now (character not spaceship :P). From stars to clothing, there are not 2 toons the same in TSW. No one looks alike.  No one has the same build.

TSW crafting is like minecraft. Much more in depth than that of WoWs. Simple enough but it will take some learning.

PvP with 4 friends is the S$hit because of synergies the four of you can create. One knocks into the air another sets the ground on fire while another slows. The group build meta game is somthing speacial. Some are starting to get into it now.

edit- Oh and FULL PVP collision. I body healers and AR users in corners several times a day lol. :)

When I eat chocolate chip pie it just doesn't feel like chocolate chip cookies. The texture, the consistency, it's just not the same and this is disappointing.

Hello and thank you for the answer.

With "TSW" you mean "The Secret World"? If yes, then we have quite different ideas about character customization as for my subjective taste the game does not offer any at all. There are not even stats existing in that game. The only thing you can "customize" if you want to use that word at all for this game is the choice of weapon. So the chars differ in wearing either a shotgun and a pistol or a hammer and a rifle. Sorry, but that is not character customization to me.

Also i dont remember instanced PvP Battlegrounds there. As far as i remember i was just teleported in a PvP area where i was just constantly slaughtered by some groups of 8 enemies running around together while my own team had only 3. One of the worst PvP setups i have ever seen.

So if "TSW" is "The Secret World" then this is not it.  Any chance you meant another game?

TSW does mean The Secret World, though you aren't really looking at it fairly.

To say that the character customization consists solely of weapon choice is just flat out wrong. There are numerous avenues:

- Character creation - it's not the most detailed in the genre, but there are plenty of physical appearance options to differentiate your character (as long as you don't want to play someone out-of-shape)

- Clothing - this is  appearance-only and does not affect stats at all, so you are free to make your character look how you like, from head to feet

- Wide-open skill system - yes, there are different weapons, but within each weapon category, you can unlock various skills... these are available to everyone, though you can only have 7 active skills and 7 passive skills equipped at a time, giving lots of flexibility in creating unique builds

And you must be talking about Fusang, which is the persistent PVP zone that is generally a zergfest dominated by the team with more people. There are also two instanced battlegrounds: El Dorado and Stonehenge... These are the more "standard" type, with 3 teams of equal numbers competing to accomplish some specific objective.

as a fellow AO refugee id say give Fallen Earth a try if you havent already,,

while in no way as complex as AO, it has a very nice ( for 2012 standards ) char customization, wont find anything better in a quality game that isnt a decade old

best fun ive had with crafting in any game ever ( tho i didnt play swg, from what ive read/heard it was the best crafting system ever )

game itself is really good, while currently on a break and playing path of exile beta im in no way done with it and gonna get back to it sooner then later

you can find quite a few ao vets in fe

no char. collision in FE, tho its a very rare mechanic in nowdays mmo's, regretably

one of the best F2P models ive encountered so far, so you can give it a try for free and have access to 100% content,,, payed stuff is just fluff+better xp rates ( you can unlock global chat and remove the 10red currency lock by spending a single $ on some fluff item from the shop, but you can aswell buy it for ingame currency ingame from other players and get rid of those 2 locks this way too, if im not mistaken )

the mentioned above TSW is a very interesting game ( not too bad char customization, tho little bit to guild wars'ish for my tastes (( limited skills you can use in a single build )) ), personally i passed on it only becouse of no open world pvp

out of the two tho, id still suggest FE, even tho im somewhat of a funcom loyalist

Games previously played: AO, AoC, Aion, AoW, Eve, SWTor, WaR, STO, TSW, DCUO, FE, BP, ProjectEntropia, FootballSuperstars!

Hello all and thanks again for the answeres.

@potaco

Well, with character customization i did not mean to customize the look but the abilities. I know that TSW offers some cosmetic customization but the look of a char is not too important for me. I would love to really create a unique Char that has skill, abilities and powers which no other char in the game has. This was possible in AO and CoH but not in TSW.

@Insane666

Thanks for the hint, i will have a look into Fallen earth. But i should add that i am not too fond of Funcom. Have paid good money for the AoC Bullshit and still have bad memories of completely screwed addons in AO.

@Gorwe

Well GW2 is probably the opposite of what i am looking for, its basically a clone of WoW and SWTor. No collision control and no character customization other than talents and loot. Its basically what bores me. So i read that in GW2 all Chars can be all roles...thet already made SWTor boring crap, cant think why it should work in another MMO. If all chars are the same, do same HpS and DpS or TpS, why are there different Chars at all? The more they make them similar to apease the whining crowd the more boring it becomes imo.

Yup obvious answer. You can not only block other characters you can roll in and take a fireball in the chin for a budy. It also has 2 separate pvp system/ environments tat cover.......well you can read/YouTube what it covers if you are that way inclined.

I think you have bad info on GW2 it's not really like WoW or Swotor. The characters are far more customisable than those games there is also a 'meta game' that you and your buddy's can get involved in to customise your whole party. There are even combos that different players can combine.

i dunno hat sort of pvp you are interested in but take a look at some of the team legacy and super squad vids on YouTube.

i meant id suggest fallen earth instead of tsw even tho im a funcom loyalist, fallen earth was made not by funcom but by some indie dev team ive forgot the name of right now, and tsw is the newest funcom mmo

and yeah, anarchy online is by far their best game ever, one thing i gotta give to them tho is they aint trying just to copy paste other games but try to get their own niche

reading your opening post it seems we're looking for simmilar stuff in our mmo's, outside char collision ive found what you wrote about in Fallen Earth, something tells me you should like it:)

While the char customization isnt anything close to what AO was, GW2 aint looking that bad, was considerring giving it a try myself, not for my main mmo title, but for a small change of pace game when ever i feel tired of my main mmo's of choice ( at that time ) in order to be able to get an easy pvp fix, untill i read about WvWvW ( single zone pvp ). No Open World PVP is what killed any anticipation of that title for me personally. Unfortunately thats the trend with AAA mmo's nowdays, to make pvp just a meta game.

All hopes left in the indie teams,,,

Yes i fully agree to that. Still good to hear that Fallen Earth is not FC, my recent experiences with them have not been too good :)

@Gorilla:

Ok now you make me curious about GW2. Just to check how much Char Customization is possible:

Can any class wear any weapon (That should be an obvious must as there is no logical reason why some class can not use a specific weapon.)?

Are there attributes like strength, agility etc. to which you can distribute some "point" with each lvl up?

I take it there is a talent system as that is the minimum customization that all games offer atm, but is there anything more, maybe like the enhancement system in coh?

I am one of the LAN members and read this thread with interest. I took a really short look into Fallen Earth ... i am not sure that the combat system will fit our LAN since its with aiming like in a shooter ... interesting  feature but not our style i fear :(

Thx for all ur responses

Cheers

Here's the thing with GW2, I don't think it has EVERYTHINg you want, but it isn't a bad fit...

Definately NOT a WoW clone. Whoever told you that, or how ever you got that conclusion, is wrong.

Starters, char creation has a decent amount of customization, but it really kicks off later on, with Transmuting your armor, you can mix and match any piece of armor you want, and put any stats you want on it from another set of armor.

So like this look but those stats? Transmute them.

Now, for the weapons, not every class can use EVERY weapon, but it has a good variety. Elementalists can use staffs, daggers, scepter ect..

Rangers can use Bows, Axes, Warhorns, 2h swords...

Necro's can use axe's, warhorns, staffs...

These are just some examples, Ranger is the only one that gets Longbow, but warrior can also use a shortbow. There isn't total freedom, but it's a good mix/match.

BIG... If you are skimming this post read this. I don't know what you know about GW2, or what you're looking for hot-bar wise, but GW2 has a limited hotbar, so if you can't deal with having only 10 skills at once, you won't like it, (keep reading) but there is weapon swap, every 7 seconds or so you can swap to another weapon set (max of 2 sets), opening up another set of skills. ALSO some skills open up even MORE skills, so like Conjure Frostbow (creates a bow of ice) opens up another tier of weapon skills, so while you only have 10 technically available, you can have upwards of 40 within seconds.

Full body collision i honestly don't know. I never thought about that but in this game there is no "healer".

GW2 does have stats,

http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/post/5189277/GW2-Stats-and-Attributes-Are-they-too-simple.html#5189277

Honestly not a bad thread about stats, it atleast shows you all of them.

Crafting should be good, it's kind of a hybrid type crafting system i would say, put 4 things into the pot and it will say if it will work or not, once you learn a recipe, you've learned it, so it's definately good, but I can't say if it's for you.

I'm sure someone will bring up "what about endgame?" well, just look up a few threads on it and you draw YOUR conclusion on it. To me it sounds great, but I havent tried it so I can't say.

Anyways, i'm not trying to sell you the game, but it honestly isn't a bad fit. On a plus side, it's only B2P, no sub fee, which is purty nice. I guess if you try other games, and can't find anything to play with your amigos, GW2 is always an option.

The "Youtube Pro": Someone who watches video's on said subject, and obviously has a full understanding of what is being said about such subject.

Hmm, GW2 _does_ indeed have some interesting aspects and we will surely hae a look at it. But to be honest, everything i learned about the game so far says that it _is_ a WOW clone, no matter how many ppl deny it.

Chars can use a small variety of weapons - same in WoW as GW2

No collision Control in PvP - same in WoW as GW2

Chars can fill different roles - same in WoW as GW2

Attributes can only be influenced by Epix Loot, no ditribution by Lvl-Up - same in WoW as GW2

Only Char Customization is Talents and Loot - Same in WoW as GW2

Actually there does not seem to be any difference at all between those two apart some minor features.

I think you should stick to the games you've been playing. if you think SWTOR with their 4th pillar of story, TSW investigation and missions with modern horror settings and GW2 [whatever they got] are WOW clones, maybe you should play PRE-WOW clones.

Stick with Ultima, Everquest, Anarcy, DAOC, etc. maybe Maplestory

Hehe... I believe that you should "move a step backward" and try out "Path of Exile". It is not a MMORPG and it has a different "view". In fact it is a modernized "Diablo 2". Imho a crossing between Guild Wars 1 and Diablo 2 in a way.

Before you say "well not thats not what I want" you should consider its character customisation features:

1. It has a passive skill tree which is shared by all "classes". You get to invest 1 point per level up (+ some from quests) which will modify your "strength" "dex" "int" values as such things like specialisation in weapons or fight stiles. It even goes so far that you can create something like a "bloodmage" with replacing life for mana skills. Or go minion master, crit builds, attack speed and whatever.

2. It has "classes" but they just define the starting attributes, the "look and gender" and the place where they start in the HUGE passive skill tree.

3. The weapons (and all skills) are freely chooseable. You can have a Marauder use a wand an a shield or a witch using a 2 handed axe. And being effective with it. Do what you like.

4. Skills are "gems" which need to be placed in sockets of your equiptment. There are "skills" like "fireball", "dual strike", "bear trap" and there are support gems with stuff like "add cold damage", "lower mana cost", "add life leach". Every "class" can use every skill as far as their "level" (skill gems level with xp) is not so high that a bound attribute like "int" for a skill like "raise zombie" goes to high. You can choose to not level a gem. This is how the game creates a balance.

5. The game will have (this is currently in development) different pvp modes. From arenas to "open world" pvp where your group can invade other groups instance.

6. The game supports play up to a group size of 6 players and is hard. It has pretty interessting game mechanics like body blocking, "bleeding, with inc damage if you move", different elemental damage types + resis for them, chaos damage (bypasses shielding).

7. Its defensive system constists of evasion, armor (damage migration), dodge (special type of evasion), life (+ life regeneration / life leach), "shield" (some layer between your life and the damage). All of those can and have to be combined to create a build which is able to play through the content. It gets very hard to play just a "dps" glass cannon. There is no known "uber" build too.... and people try hard to come up with one :)

To make it short: It is a pretty hard game with stuff like XP los on death. Its skill system (passive + active + playstyle) is pretty demanding and has probably the highes charakter customisation level of any game I played so far!

It does not have a dedicated healer role and it will not be a "I ride my horse into the sunset in 3d" game...

Hi there,

i think there wont be a mmo with a complex character system like AO had. The mayority of the mmo player dont want to spend 2 hours to understand the lvling system...wich is sad.

Pen and Paper is dying slowly and so are the skills / leveling systems they use.

I wonder what mmo Blizz is doing atm...i didnt find any infos nor rumors except that they do one, that hasnt anything to do with wow.

TSW has a nice new idea with the actionpoints you spend in skills and the points you spend on weapons/talisman.

Its the direction we want, but abit to less imho.

PS: i am the 3rd of the lan party with bernie :)

have a nice one all

Bipappapump, Tank in AO,WoW, WAR,COH,Rift,SWTOR,TSW...

I disagree with your statement that such games does not exist. But they will not fit your "idea" of a game I bet!

Two games to mention (which are still played and have a nice fan population) are:

1. "Wurm Online" which is so hard to understand as newbie that you will carry your noob shoes for weeks and even after months you still need to ask others for information. It also is a true sandbox and player driven economy game. Its presentation is rather special and I am sure it will not appeal to you guys. Still it hast what you ask for the most: Highly charakter specialisations with a very deep skill system. It even has probably one of the cooles PVP system as this includes real eastate and land borders. People which are playing this game will have to master a steep learning curve but be rewarded with the "ultimate freedom". Yet it is no primarily fight game. Actually it is a crafting based game with a looooot of options (I for example breed riding horses.. hehe)

2. "EVE Online" is for sure a working player driven economy pvp feast with just the most cruel pvp system you can invent "free for all and people can be people". You need your share of time to play this game and you need a degree in science, business and military operations to just step out of your "beginners" vehicle and into a real ship :)

Both games are "living creatures" and of course niche... You are asking for a "mainstream game ala AO". Which will probably never again happen. People want to have FUN while playing where FUN means: Beat the game in 24 hours by laying mayhem to all other creatures and bitch about it having no endgame .. so you can move to the next "money making soap bubble".

So what to do? Find you niche! I did and I am happily playing: Wurm (less) and Path of Exile (more)... with an share of League of Legends for the REAL competive pvp fun.

You guys should just return to AO :) ... after some time you will find out why people do not want such games anymore. Cause they suck if you try to play them "today". We are all "spoiled rotten" and want our first girl back!
