Topic.
I wouldve never imagined in less than a year TOR would have failed this hard, it is sad really. I remember in beta a year ago, I was so excited for it and thought it had really good promise. But then:
BW ignored its beta testers Launched to early (prob due to EA pressure) Released with standard mmo features missing (like combat log, LFG feature, ToT, Weather effects, etc Ignoring player requests for changes, additions of content/features The CE debacle Nerfing the wrong classes into oblivion Illum Really bad engine (TESO hope you are listening) Horrible CS support
I could go on but so many problems, you would think EA/BW wanted to make this game fail. I miss SWG now, and wish it could came back after this dissapointment. I dont know if F2P will change anything, it could either slow/stop the decline or make it go down the tubes even further. It is sad though, to see yet another wasted opportunity for a contender mmo to WoW. Hopefully, one day, there will be a new SW MMO that will do the IP justice.

Going by historical facts of MMOs that went F2P, it will generate a lot more $$$ for EA. DDO, LOTRO, AOC all went F2P and saw their profits soar very rapidly. Last I checked, Aion is also doing really really well after the F2P.
F2P makes more money than sub-based games compared to the number of people that play the game. That's just busines reality. Wonder why there seems to be more haters on the internet? Read this by an actual marketing guy to find out why. |

initially it will be a boost. ultimately it will be a bad thing imo. the pricing wasn't the problem. even for the "40%" that gave the reason "If it was free I would play it all the time" LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity. |

F2P is basically a re-launch of the game. Without question, the re-launch event itself will bring in a massive crowd. What happens after that? Well, it depends on how Bioware handles their F2P setup. They've made mistakes in the past though, but they have acknowledged and fixed some of them. I'd say the game has a chance... but it will be feast or famine. It will either boom, or completely die.

Sub numbers will continue to fall, but account numbers should rise again at least initially. I don't know how that will affect their continuation of the game, but it seems like it will cost a pretty penny to hire voice actors for new planets, so it will still have to outperform LOTRO monetarily to produce the same amount of content as LOTRO. It's not that the price of the game is bad - it's that the game is objectively bad itself. Poorly constructed on a mangled, licensed engine that disallows any potential correction: more than five players in one area and the FPS drops to single digits, badly implemented PvP, the list goes on and we all know the faults. There are many of them.
There may be a small increase in the number of players, but I'd have to imagine that these hypothetical players must not have had an internet connection for the past seven months while being stranded in the desert. The decline won't accelerate because I think the record must be TOR's 1.7 million players divebombing to 100,000 in the span of six months. There are Olympics going on at the moment and they should definitely get a medal for that. There's no staunching the bleeding. But it's not going to accelerate it. I still say this game will be discontinued by December. LA is not going to be happy with their return and may want to get the license back to save face. I think we've got enough separate topics on this already.
