Any community large enough will have your share of idiots.

It is like anything in real-life, a community of 1 million (like an actual City) won't be filled with 'nice' people all the time.

Wonder why there seems to be more haters on the internet?

Read this by an actual marketing guy to find out why.

Lord of the Rings online, you may miss some content buy not spending money on expansions buts its still pretty good...hmmm could try Aion and Aika as well

Edit: most people will dis any game you list that is F2P cause most of them are garb but those might be some of the better ones IMO        Also Fallen Earth...it is a sandbox and has more to it involved than a themepark game like most mmo's....but its really fun and the help channel is actually helpful im still pretty much a noob to sandboxes as well and they helped me with stuff.

yea pvp is player vs player...a sandbox game is basically a wide open world with no set path, you go where you wanna go whether it be across the vast open world to level gathering or following the quests like a normal game or even just exploring bandit hideouts, there are many ways to level up....a themepark is where there are fewer options for leveling IE basically quests, sometimes battlegrounds...i honestly dont know it very definitively, and im sure im wrong a bit, but thats my view at least...themeparks are just...basically they just have less stuff to do than a sandbox lets put it that way...im sure someone else can elaborate more

Just because it takes me a little more time than most to get the hang of the game, doesn't mean I can't eventually be good at the game. I don't understand the harm in some of you "oh so great masters of MMOs" stopping and helping someone who's lost or confused on how to do something. Instead of ranting some newbie crap and running off to kill something or continue your current quest. All and all it's tempting to just stop playing these games all together because no one will give a newbie a chance. :( So my only questions is why?

Well, some people are just bastards and like to bring others down. But relax, it is easy to stop being a noob and very hard to stop being an @sshat.

Noobs that are willing to listen to advices from vets have a huge potential and when I am guildrecruiter they are my main target. They are relatively easy to learn up to be good in groups unlike people who have soloed up to max level and think they know the game.

its hard to say what to recommed. i would agree with wow, except that .. damn its hard to explain. the problem us mmo vets have is that these games are really not designed with us in mind anymore. or as others would put it .. we have changed. it's hard to recommend a game.

but if I had to pick, I would say Rift, or GW2. Theres advantages and disadvantages to both, but both appear to be solid games. That is to say that Rift is a solid game, GW2 hasn't been released yet .. os it's hard to give it full approval.

I would probably recommend Vanguard for the most old-school appeal .. but thats a risky approval as well .. though it is going f2p soon. If you are still looking then, id say give that a try.

LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity.
I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already :)

wouldnt put it any other way, i hate WoW now but i played it for 4 years...for a newbie its heaven tho i had so much fun in the beginning hehe...i was 14 years old and during the end of burning crusade i was a noob who was the guild leader of a guild that had 300 members and lasted for 2 years before it fell apart...back then 300 members was alot cause you had to spam invites without add on's or macro's...my guild was a blast

I wouldn't call it heaven.  Its completely empty.  Its more like a single player purgatory.

its not as populated as it used to be but there are still high-full pop realms and alot of medium realms i wouldnt call it empty, sitting in orgrimmar on Deathwing server theres still a shit load of people sitting around or buzzing all over the place....i cant say much for quest area's tho cause i have 13 85's and no slots left for new chars....

Edit: The other 3 are on Fenris server i could make a char there but that server is for sure dead pretty much....

Back when I started playing MMOs with WoW around 2006-07, the people I encountered were more often than not extremely helpful and tolerant. It really made a great impression on me. It wasn't just a few folks that I ran with. It was nearly everyone I encountered running around the game world.

Today, I am not one of those people who cares about whether somebody has run something before. Even when I helped run a raiding guild I never checked achievements or gearscore. It doesn't bother me in the slightest to have to take a minute or two to explain a fight to somebody new. I may have taken someone aside afterwards and asked that they work with me or another experienced player on gearing or spec or rotation issues, and I may have had to make other adjustments to the group or the objectives for that night, but I've never kicked anyone from one of my groups for being bad at their role or making a genuine mistake.

BUT, I don't tolerate jerks for very long, and being a noob doesn't make being a jerk acceptable. Talking back to somebody who actually is trying to help you makes me not want to play with you. Unfortunately too many new players have a chip on their shoulder, either because of their perception of how MMO communities feel about noobs, or because of actual experience, and even help is met with suspicion or outright hostility. It's unfortunate.

Rockhide that would make anyone mad, it makes me mad too. I try to give people advice, and some of them take it the wrong way saying stuff like "I know how to play my char" or "what do you know"   yada yada yada

Complaining that someone doesn't drop what they are doing just to help you is immature.  If I actually SEE someone request help I might well help, but I don't always see what's in Chat.  I always reduce the chat window to the bare minimum (usually about 4 or 5 lines of text) and text scrolls FAST when you're in combat and so forth.  Additionally, because I voice-chat a lot with RL friends and family, I quite often never even glance at the Chat window for 15 to 20 minutes at a time.  Basically, don't assume everyone is just ignoring you.

On the other hand, even if I DO see your request, I may well - forgive my temerity - be too busy to respond or assist.  It might have taken me quite a while to get to the point I am at, maybe crossing an entire zone and clearing lots of trash mobs to get into an instance I haven't completed yet, and I have no intention of going through all that again just for your benefit.  We all started out knowing nothing about how to play MMOs, yet we all managed to figure it out.  If you are completely stuck, why not exert yourself and use Google to get a few pointers to help you along?

Never sacrifice freedom for security

List of FTP games that will give you a wide array of gaming lingo and skills.

LotRo : Really is one of the best ftp games, and a friendly community that will teach you how to play a themepark style MMO.

DDO : DDO has a different style of play, its more action based and really gets into the details in regards to stats.

AoC : Again, comes with a unique combat system and the game is fairly pretty.

DCOU: For the superhero in you. (personally prefer CoH, but thats PTP)

LOTRO : Lord of the rings online

DDO: Dungeons & Dragons Online

AoC: Age of Conan

DCOU: DC Online Universe

COH: City of Heroes

FTP: Free to Play

PTP: Pay to Play

Just my 2 cents

You've decided to start playing MMOs at a really bad time, the genre stinks.  My advice would be to find (a different hobby :I) a game you're interested in, then play it until you aren't a noob anymore.  Simple as that.  If you want to learn typical MMO jargon and what not, then I would suggest playing WoW.  It is still the best and most polished MMO on the market, even if it is a shadow of its former self.  It has a dubious community... but every game does.  The whole internet does.   Some people wont help you because they have no patience and are rude, thats online gaming for ya, just get over it.

I would actually say that GW2 would be a really good place to start if you are new to MMO's.

On release you will be shoulder to shoulder with a lot of other people who are in the same boat of being new to the game, so you can all level up and figure things out together plus you arent faced with rows and rows of skills on your taskbar. and best of all its not gonna cost you anything a month to play.
