Smart idea, avoid a game because it is hyped up on how good it is after everyone tried it....that will get you far /sarcasm off |

This again? News flash guy: Hype is no longer hype when people have actually experienced the game. |

Forums are bad when there is too much hype. Look at Warhammer online for example.

Thanks to whoever made that the worst game ever invented. However, although I agree that testimonials can contribute to 'hype', I also have to agree that there is a difference between a paid testimonial and a voluntary testimonial. There is a distinguishing characteristic between hype and excitement. The former is generated falsley, with the explicit goal of inflating expectations and getting the $$$ in pocket quick then running away. The latter is generally more exemplary of a healthy interest created by the truth of the statements made leading to a desire to let others know that the expectations are actually being met. |

I fully support not buying into a game without first trying it.
In this day and age when obtaining a beta key for most games is just a matter of effort, there's no reason for not having tried a game you want to try before it is released. Having said that, if you didn't like the game, that's cool. However, not liking a game because other people enjoy it is downright awful.
Like any jaded veteran, I've had my doubts about the game, but I made sure to test those things out for myself in the beta events. Some things I was pleasantly impressed with; otherwise I'm quite cautious about. Either way, I let me own experiences determine my judgement on the game; good or bad.
Letting 'hype' dictate whether you should enjoy a game or not is probably worse than the zealously optimistic fanboys you claim to despise.

Hmmm. You make a good point OP. For three beta weekends tens of thousands of players have been playing and then sharing their own first hand experience about the pros and cons of the game. They are all probably wrong and lying to hype the game. You are wise to overly generalize them all. |

I see hype as trolls that support a game so ignoring them as regular trolls (I'm not saying hype = just liking the game).
GW2 looks interesting but will wait to decide at least two months after release (but not because of hype issues though) for player feedback when everything settles (besides obvious bug fixing and such).
Edit I didn't get a beta key unfortunately and preordering is out of the question so have to wait and see. |

Couldn't really care less about hype to be honest, I'd rather stay away from a over-marketed game than an over-hyped one if I must pick a silly reason not to consider something. That said, I usually just go with my gut feeling. |
