So by using the scaling above, with GW2 being hyped on this site at a 8.7, that implies that the majority of people feel this game is somewhere between, really good, and really really good.  Now if you have a hard time beleiving that a developer can make a really really good game than you should probably move on and try a different hobby because you are holding alot of negativity for the industry.

Or people could be looking for an MMO for different things.  Overall PvE just isn't that good in GW2 for some people.  It comes off as hallow and uninspired.  The dynamic events really don't work for those that were hoping for a larger impact on things that they would care about.  It does scale significantly in later zones, but I think the earlier zones don't showcase that well.

Their PvP is amazing.

Doesn't not buying a game because other people are excited about it seem kind of like a stupid hipster thing to do?

Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?

I'm waiting for a while probably until the box price drops and there are no more zergs everywhere on the PvE side but thats not because of the hype really as I don't buy into hype, learned that lesson a long time ago I didn't get into beta so I'm waiting.

But the hype surroundimng this game could be a problem as many people who are not really into this type of game will be attracted to it as the next big thing only to find out its not for them and come qq on the forums, sounds familiar though doesn't it?

This doom and gloom thread was brought to you by Chin Up™ the new ultra high caffeine soft drink for gamers who just need that boost of happiness after a long forum session.

I was a bit concerned with that, but after playing the BWEs, i think the game is what arenanet said it would be. I dont see a single thing that i could feel like i was fooled by them.

Maybe some will say it is just one hyped game, but i think that the ones who actually played it and didnt log with their mind already made to talk crap about it after, really enjoyed it. For me is the best mmo out there without doubts, but ofc some dont agree because its not their kind of mmo, others wont admit they were wrong when they said it was all hype, others just dont like any mmo so every single mmo out there will be bad for them lol.

For me it's not just the hype but also the setting, no more fantasy games for me.

Getting too hyped up about anything can be bad and lead to disappointment. But being excited about something doesn't automatically mean you will be let down. Just be more realistic in your expectations. If you are expecting a fun and engaging game - then you are good to go. If you are expecting to find Baby Jesus - You are likely to be disappointed.

45 bucks to find out for yourself. no monthly fee, could be worse imo :)

My decision to play or not is not affected by the hype.

I play games because they appeal to me. That may be because of the setting, the gameplay or the graphics or any combination of those three. GW2 doesn't appeal to me, so I'll not be playing it, regardless of the hype.

Nope, but waiting a month or two to see how everything settles.

The parts in red are the ones that I will address because they are the ones I have trouble with.

Lets address them in order:

Overhyped: This game is almost entirely hyped by people who have been playing it and actually had their hands on it. It is not "overhyped", what you are looking at is actual player feedback based on game-time, for the most part. Contrast that with another big budget MMO from recent history, which I will not name, where most of the hype was based on CGI videos, cutscenes, the IP, and devs talking about how awesome the game will be. We aren't talking about how awesome the game "will be". We are talking about how awesome the game "already is".

Doubt it: Tells me that you haven't played it yourself and/or haven't been following it. Disbelief is also a type of belief, so please tell me what you are basing your belief on? Have you spoken to people who have actually played the game and had a negative experience? Did you watch videos and not like what you saw? Do you just prefer sandbox open world pvp and think anything less can't be that good? What exactly is it that causes you to doubt that it is that good?

Regarding AOC: I did not play it myself but I did have friends and others who played at launch. From what they told me at the time, the game was great... For 20 levels. There was no content from lvl 20 to lvl 80, however. Once you got past the part that they had showcased during the beta, the game was a shell.

Regarding WAR: It was not as good as it was hyped to be, but it was a very solid game. I have my own thoughts about why it flopped the way it did, but that is so extensive that it is not practical to talk about it here.

tl;dr

Take it from someone who has played it extensively(Every class up to at least lvl 15, etc).

The game really is as good as it sounds, and the hype is not "hype"(artificial interest generated through clever promotion) but rather justified excitement from people who have actually played the game and have experienced it first-hand.

What is "real"? How do you define "real"?

7/23/12 1:54:05 PM#34

Oh, yea!  Yet another "this game is overhyped so I'm not playing" thread.

I don't think GW2 is "overhyped".  There is a lot of excitement for it, yes, and it's well deserved.  Hype is based on fiction.  The excitement about GW2 is not.

I purchased this game for a few reasons:

I'm a big fan of GW1

I'm a fan of Arena.net

The Manifesto was brilliant, IMHO.

The game videos I saw looked great

The feedback from people who played (press beta, gaming conventions) confirmed that Anet was actually doing the things they said they were going to do.

So, I pre-purchased, and was able to play the 3 BWEs.  Playing in those only served to tell me that I made the right decision and that the excitement over GW2 is not hype - as in, it's not excitement based on fiction and conjecture.

But, if you want to not try a game because you are tired of hearing the excitement about it and don't want to take the time to actually check it out, that's your choice.  Although, then I have to ask:  Why are you taking the time to tell people that you won't take the time to try the game out?????

You want me to pay to play a game I already paid for???

Be afraid.....The dragons are HERE!

I believe in life before death... So dont forget to enjoy it while you still can.

Ignore the hype and base your opinion on the facts, as did most other people overhere on this site.

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations)
Currently playing : The Elder Scrolls Online and Wildstar

As far as I'm concerned, if I allow myself to stay away from something because of "hype" then I'm essentially giving power to those who are hyping the game. I'm essentially making them the deciders for what i can enjoy. Or anything really, movie, book, etc.

The quality of an object doesn't change because of hype or lack thereof. Somethign isn't better and more worthwhile because of lack of hype. It isn't worse because of enormous hype.

It is what it is and I can make my own decisions.

Whatever you do, do NOT speak ill of Asheron's Call 2...

7/23/12 1:59:05 PM#38

I am not avoiding it, I actually enjoy it quite a bit. A lot of the community I could do without though. Aside from a handful of players I felt the community was really rude and childish. Just like on these forums if you brought up a complaint, no matter how valid, you usually got sh*t upon by the community.

And other than not really feeling as if the game could walk on water like a lot of these drones I am going to purchase it for sure.

As far as hype, whatever. I choose what I want to play based on my own opinion. If something looks interesting and fun to play then I am there, if not, then no skin off my teeth...

You are correct that different people have different likes and I'm not arguing that.  The OP's statement had nothing to do with the type of game they prefer or offered any insight into it. They state that they are avoiding the game because they can't believe the hype.  That is the point I was addressing, not what one person likes might differ from anothers. So thank you very much for the abstract contribution to my statement, I'm sure it was meant with good intentions.

All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.

All of that and money spent without even setting foot in the game...

The second part, that is purely your opinion. And everyone has one, kind of like...well you know...
