If EA were to publish a New Ultima Online, but with themepark design would it be a WOW killer?

No. It would be a better clone. But a clone is still a clone, and gamers are getting tired of that clone in greater and greater numbers. These gamers don't want to go through levelling up yet another game, even if it's better. So, it would sell, but it wouldn't kill WoW or ever reach those vaunting numbers. This is the situation for ArchAge too. If it plays as a Themepark, it's not going to hold those big numbers. Same as the current clonespew, GW2 and TSW. Just as it was for SWTOR. Once upon a time.... |

No. But, if someone with talent, who was much loved for their previous games took Ultima Online and recreated it with a fantasticly friendly and pretty graphics 3D engine and an amazingly user-friendly UI, and introduced lots of great stories... then, yes, I reckon it could be a wow rival. But not as a theme park. As Ultima Online, with the same ruleset and freedom. And boats. And rune-marking. And one-square isle. Originally posted by m0lly It is going down slowly. The thing it has going for it presently is that it's a great Themepark, but more importantly for it's players it has familiarity. It's a comfort zone sort of thing. "UO done right" used to be a fairly common term. It included the idea of doing it in 3D and somehow removing the rampant PKing, and then expanding those things that UO did so right. Once upon a time.... |

Not more then TES Online. . right. . we know where this is headed. IPs make wow killers right star trek and star wars? The game would have to be good no matter what title is behind it to last and "kill" anything.
What made UO great was its "newness" the community relying on each other rather than web searches etc. It was a complete sandbox. I just don't see how UO:Themepark would be any different than ???: Themepark. Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is! |

No. It would just be a better version of WoW and that is not what most of us want. When we will Devs and companies actually start to get this? Stop paying them money for bad games people! |

LoL
Amount of hatred that would be thrown on EA if they would make UO2 as themepark would be astounding. I really really would not do that if I would be EA. |

Originally posted by Danrlei What big shot game developers are failing to see (see TOR, WAR, and many others) is that the WoW model of online gaming is failing. The Themepark is on the decline. The only way I can see ultima being successful is if it was like it originally was before it went all carebear. Ultima isn't a name anymore except to those who used to play it. Oh, and EA is involved. Lets not forget that lololol. Too bad gamers aren't the ones with the money to invest in games instead of corporate big shots who don't have a clue. |

A themepark UO would be a cashgrab and tank after the first month while upsetting the comunity of UO Vets and Sandbox Players damaging not only the brand but the publisher/developer as well (there should ring a Bell now very loud at Zenimax!). There be only 2 WOW-Killer: One of them will succeed! I'd hate to see UO redone as a theme park. That would be TESO all over again. |

Even a new Ultima designed like the original Ultima wouldn't be a WoW killer. But at least it wouldn't receive the mountain of hate a themepark design would get. |

Wishful: Re-create UO, Minor updates and polishing, improve interface ten fold, keep all playing mechanics.
Reality: Company in search for the $$$, will be dumbed down, wow clone, end up being item mall.

A sword is never a killer, it is a tool in the killer's hands. |

No. The goodwill for the"Ultima" brand is not in the IP - it's in the history of being first-to-market in CRPG and MMO spaces and for the concept of including a personification of the lead developer as a character in the lore of the game itself. Being last-to-market in a well-established genre and without rights to mention the creator of the game in the lore gives precious little for loyalists to grasp onto. It could be a respectable niche seed to grow a new generation of loyalty from, but a WoW-killer just because of the name? Not a chance. |

If you are looking for the WoW killer. Wasn't there some survey recently about which game had most hours played? Wasn't the winner League of Legends? Wouldn't that qualify a game as WoW killer already today (despite it not being an MMO)? |
