Hmmm... am I the only one that thinks that maybe what the OP needs is to re-assess his expectations? I could be wrong, but the OP sounds like one of those hardcore MMO fans that wants a seamless virtual world, with state of the art graphics, FFA pvp, etc. etc. Not a game, but a second virtual life. The problem with that, is that you aren't going to find a game that does all that anytime soon. Either a game needs to have loading screens to manage the content, or you have what is essentially the same games we already have, reskinned. This is not to say that there aren't any AAA MMOs with potential, but it sounds like the OP doesn't want a good game. He wants a secondary virtual life that meets a very specific, niche list of demands that would cost more to make than it would profit from fans. I mean, I hate to say it, but when you stop treating your games as games, you're going to find it increasingly more difficult to find ones that live up to your own expectations. What's happening in the MMO genre is actually quite the opposite of what happened w/ COD. MMOs are trying to differentiate themselves more and more. It just sounds like the OP doesn't want them to do this. He wants them to go back to being more of the same, just as a sandbox. |

Originally posted by tixylix I fail to see the problem then. You have a game you're happy with. Mind you, that does seem to be rather at odds with your title...but what can ya do? FFXIV (being relaunched at the end of the year or early next year) Archage (looks to be a good sanbox) Xsyon prelude (totally different from most mmorpg's although I know it's not AAA) Wakfu maybe? (again not AAA, but definitely different) Thats all I could think of for the moment |

Originally posted by tixylix Well now, LOL is probably a MMO, just not a fully featured virtual world that MMORPG's used to be. Many different styles of gameplay out there, and unfortunately for you (and me) there are no real successors to SWG, UO, AC or other older titles whose gameplay mechanics fell largely out of favor. Yes, there's a few on the horzon with a glimmer of hope such as ArchAge, WOD or RePop, but think if those ever release it's at least a year or three away. For now it's better to focus on the fun that each new title has, and stop worrying about what they might lack, you'll enjoy gaming more that way.

I feel your pain OP. These games that pass themselves off as mmorpg's now a days are just single player games with crappy pvp and gear grind end games tacked on.
I too miss the days of old that had games like UO, EQ1, AC, and DAOC where the game world was actually a WORLD. Not a bunch of squares with quests in them. You could travel from point A on one side of the world to point B. Sure there was loading screens but it took you directly to the otherside of the zone line. Not across the entire world.
SWtor was a giant pile of crap, it shames the greatness of Kotor. I'm still enjoying TSW but its starting to wear me down that the world is just instances. I can't actually travel from one location to another via train, plane, boat, or bus. I use a magical teleporting tree system.
I don't know why all these fucking developers have it in their mind that nobody gives a flying fuck about actual virtual worlds anymore! I long for the days of getting shit faced drunk on a ship headed to Butcherblock Mnts from the Freeport Docks. Then falling off the side of the ship because my vision was so distorted I couldn't see where I was going. Then swimming to a nearby island to get face stomped by a cyclops. NOW THAT IS WHAT MMOS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE LIKE!
Experiences that are so fun, exciting, and or scary that they burn into your mind forever. I could tell you a million experiences of fun mmo adventures prior to 2004. After that everything went to shit.
Every single mmo since WoW's launch has just been a blur of killing 10,20,40 of X and bring Y a package. WOW SO FUN AND MEMORABLE!
WTB the little things that made mmo's great:
Alcohol tolerance, learning languages, ship rides, consequences for playing like a retard and dying non stop, quests that were extremely difficult to complete and took thinking, cities that reflect their faction/race, Non-mirrored classes, actual factions (play a iksar and try to stroll into qeynos). Night/day cycles (really? game devs cant even bother adding in a fucking night/day cycle to make a world even remotely real?) etc...etc...etc....
omfg mmo's are such garbage now Playing: LoL / GW2 |

Well, from that angle of view, answer is "no". I suggest you low down your hopes a bit next time. Main MMO at the moment: Guild Wars 2 |

No. You know what's a lot more fun that dinging the cap and going end game in a different game every 2 years? Knee dragging on the apex of a hairpin at 80km/h. Plus you get a lot more girls that way....and not the whales either. |

I think that ArcheAge is the most promising MMO on the horizon. It appears to be a sandbox game with themepark elements. It definitely does not seem to be as shallow as regular themeparks, such as TERA, Rift, SWTOR. GW 2, TSW. If you check out the videos and feature list, you weill see that there is plenty of sand to play around with. Players' actions may have long term impact on the environment too. Building, crafting, creating is endowed with depth that seems to exceed the average level in the market. There are games that go even further in this direction, such as Wurm Online. However, they usually have terrible graphics and most of all gameplay. Archeage seems to present the freedom in a themeparky friendly user package and also in a top graphics you can find in MMO. The developers claim that it is supposed to be a Next-gen MMO and as such it would be the first of that kind. The problem is that we are not certain whether the features will be delivered in such a manner that it would really make an amazing game. I mean there is still a possibility that the game will be a total failure which I really hope will not happen. Also it will most likely be released somewhere in Q4 2013 or Q1 2014, so that it is not really an "upcoming" AAA MMO. I am convinced that Blizzard will announce Titan in 2013 which may also become a game to follow. As they said, it is supposed to be a Next-gen MMO as well and it is like a common knowledge that Blizz is capable of delivering top games. If you do not like fantasy setting, you may want to check Repopulation out, it also seems to be a promising sandbox.
